How to shut off a quasar

Active galaxies are some of the brightest objects in the Universe. These galaxies send out enormous jets of matter at near light speed, all powered by matter falling into the supermassive black hole at the center. While all galaxies seem to have supermassive black holes, not all of them are active—our own galaxy, the Milky Way, has a quiet black hole at its core. So what makes the difference? Why are some galaxies and their black holes active, while others sit quietly?

Obviously, taking a regular galaxy and turning it into an active one isn’t as simple as flicking a light switch. Modeling has suggested that activating a galaxy’s central black hole (and thus the galaxy as a whole) can be part of the galaxy-building process, which takes place through the merger of smaller galaxies through collisions. These collisions can send gas sloshing around inside the galaxy, creating high enough densities at the core to activate the black hole. Now, another study is suggesting that these collisions can shut the black hole down again as well—it all depends on the details of the geometry.

A donut near the hole

To understand how this works, you have to understand the environment near a black hole. While a great deal of attention is paid to the reality-bending gravity at the black hole’s event horizon, everything that actually affects the surrounding Universe takes place a bit of a distance from that location. There, the black hole’s gravity organizes any infalling matter into a flattened disk that feed matter into the black hole called an accretion disk, with the black hole at its center. Beyond that, a more diffuse, donut-shaped cloud of gas feeds into this disk.

Nia Dennis' incredible 9.95 floor exercise

nia-dennis-floor-exercise.jpg

Last year, UCLA gymnast Nia Dennis gained attention when she performed a floor exercise to Beyonce and scored a 9.975. Well on Saturday she pulled out another amazing performance, scoring a 9.95 to clinch the win for the Bruins against Arizona State.

Obviously her floor exercises are going viral because they’re non-traditional, but they’re also really, really good. Although how are the judges differentiating between scores like 9.975 and 9.95? Can you really tell when something is 0.025 better than something else? That’s 2.5%. I mean…I guess her toe was a little more bent when she jumped that one time so let’s deduct 1/100th of a point?

Keep going for the full routine as well as the one that went viral from last year. Turns out this Nia lady is pretty good at dancing around and flipping.

caches trackers can abuse to build supercookies. Firefox 85 partitions all
of the following caches by the top-level site being visited: HTTP cache,
image cache, favicon cache, HSTS cache, OCSP cache, style sheet cache, font

New book: Get Started with MicroPython on Raspberry Pi Pico

So, you’ve got a brand new Raspberry Pi Pico and want to know how to get started with this tiny but powerful microcontroller? We’ve got just the book for you.

Get Started with Raspberry Pi Pico book

Beginner-friendly

In Get Started with MicroPython on Raspberry Pi Pico, you’ll learn how to use the beginner-friendly language MicroPython to write programs and connect hardware to make your Raspberry Pi Pico interact with the world around it. Using these skills, you can create your own electro-mechanical projects, whether for fun or to make your life easier.

Inside the pages of the Raspberry Pi Pico book

After taking you on a guided tour of Pico, the books shows you how to get it up and running with a step-by-step illustrated guide to soldering pin headers to the board and installing the MicroPython firmware via a computer.

Programming basics

Inside the pages of the Raspberry Pi Pico book 02

Next, we take you through the basics of programming in MicroPython, a Python-based programming language developed specifically for microcontrollers such as Pico. From there, we explore the wonderful world of physical computing and connect a variety of electronic components to Pico using a breadboard. Controlling LEDs and reading input from push buttons, you’ll start by creating a pedestrian crossing simulation, before moving on to projects such as a reaction game, burglar alarm, temperature gauge, and data logger.

Raspberry Pi Pico also supports the I2C and SPI protocols for communicating with devices, which we explore by connecting it up to an LCD display. You can even use MicroPython to take advantage of one of Pico’s most powerful features, Programmable I/O (PIO), which we explore by controlling NeoPixel LED strips.

Get your copy today!

You can buy Get Started with MicroPython on Raspberry Pi Pico now from the Raspberry Pi Press online store. If you don’t need the lovely new book, with its new-book smell, in your hands in real life, you can download a PDF version for free (or a small voluntary contribution).

STOP PRESS: we’ve spotted an error in the first print run of the book, affecting the code examples in Chapters 4 to 7. We’re sorry! Fortunately it’s easy for readers to correct in their own code; see here for everything you need to know. We’ve already corrected this in the PDF version.

Make Walking More Bearable With Dolly Parton's Apple Fitness Series

I hate walking a lot less than running, but little is more exciting than spending an hour outside in the boring blah of suburbia. Give me hills, trails, water—anything but asphalt and walking past six different Starbucks across three blocks. And while Apple can’t make trees and lush landscapes grow out of nothing, the…

PepsiCo and Beyond Meat Launch Poorly Named Joint Venture For New Plant-Based Food and Drinks

PepsiCo, the planetary purveyor of sugary drinks, greasy chips, and (weirdly) oatmeal, hummus, and gazpacho(?) is partnering with Beyond Meat, the publicly traded plant-based protein provider, on a poorly named joint venture to hawk new plant-based food and beverages to consumers. From a report: The PLANeT Partnership (which was clearly branded by the same genius behind the comic sans font), will combine Beyond Meat’s skills with protein prestidigitation and PepsiCo’s marketing and manufacturing savvy to flood the global market with new snacks and drinks, the two companies said. Neither company disclosed any financial terms and other pesky details around who, what, where, and when, except to say that the the joint venture operations will be managed through the newly created PLANeT Partnership. (If the companies put as much effort into running the business as they did with naming and branding it, Impossible Foods shouldn’t have much to worry about… The capitalization and branding of this thing is an affront to the English language is all I’m saying.)
