Fable Was Initially Pitched As A Game About Wizards Dueling For Each Other's Hearts

In 2004, amidst a moral panic over the consequence-free violence of games like Grand Theft Auto, Fable broke ground for showing players the tangible consequences for their good or evil actions. But the fantasy role-playing game didn’t begin its life as Fable—or even as a role-playing game.

A USB Stick as an SSD? A New Silicon Motion SM3282 Single-Chip Controller for USB SSDs

Silicon Motion has introduced its first single-chip controller for portable USB SSDs. The SM3282 promises to enable makers of portable drives to offer up to 400 MB/s sequential read speeds in a cost-efficient manner previously unachievable by external SSDs.

Silicon Motion’s SM3282 chip packs a USB 3.0 (aka USB 3.2 Gen 1) controller alongside an SSD controller featuring 2 NAND channels with 4 CE (Chip Enables) per channel, integrated 3.3V/2.5V/1.8V/1.2V voltage regulators, and other necessary things. The chip comes in a 68-pin QFN package and supports the latest types of 3D NAND memory (including 3D TLC and 3D QLC memory featuring up to 96 layers) from all leading suppliers of flash. It also supports both USB Type-A as well as USB Type-C connectors.

Previously, makers of external SSDs had to use a USB-to-PCIe bridge alongside an SSD controller to build their products, which greatly increased BOM costs as well as the final price. The SM3282 packs all the necessary functionality into a single chip and thus reduces BOM cost of external SSDs.

As far as performance is concerned, the SM3282 can enable external SSDs featuring up to 400 MB/s sequential read and write speeds. Meanwhile, producers of actual SSDs tend to use different types of memory with different interface speeds, so performance of actual devices will vary.

This week Silicon Motion is demonstrating prototype external SSDs based on the SM3282 at Computex. Expect commercial drives powered by the controller to be available in the coming quarters at a variety of price bands.

Make a Kinder, Gentler 'Negroni' With Avèze

It’s Negroni season. How can I tell? Easy—I just open my inbox and read the many press releases alerting me to the fact. I do love the three-ingredient cocktail; I drink it year-round, but the “season” is really a marketing ploy for the Campari company, which means the grassier, gentian-focused White Negroni gets left…

Hulu Has 82M Viewers, and Most of Them Are Seeing Ads

Hulu has broken out some new total audience figures and revealed just how many of those total viewers are watching the company’s ad-supported streaming service. From a report: Peter Naylor, senior vice president and head of advertising sales at Hulu, said that his company counts 82 million overall viewers, and added that nearly 70% of those viewers are on Hulu’s $5.99-per-month ad-supported plan. According to Variety, that works out to 58 million, or an average of 2.9 viewers per Hulu account. Naylor’s comments add some context for figures that Hulu disclosed earlier this month. The company said it now has more than 28 million total customers (26.8 million paid subscribers and 1.3 million promotional accounts). The company also said that its ad-supported audience grew by 43% year over year and that total ad-supported hours watched on Hulu increased by 82% year over year.

IKEA Recreates The Simpsons, Stranger Things, And Friends Living Rooms With Their Furniture

pop-culture-ikea-rooms-1.jpg

These are three shots of pop culture living rooms (The Simpsons, Stranger Things, and Friends) recreated by IKEA using their furniture as part of their ‘Real Life’ series. Want to recreate my living room? Here’s what you do: hang a 32-inch flatscreen on the wall using long nails. Does the television work? If it works break it. Next, order a bunch of pizzas and use the empty boxes as a coffee table/roach attractor. Finally, lay an air mattress on the floor under the wall opposite the television. Blow it up. Is it nice and firm? Now pop it with a car key and welcome to my life.

Keep going for the rooms, as well as the actual versions for reference.

The North Face Used Wikipedia To Climb To the Top of Google Search Results

An anonymous reader shares a report: When you first start planning a big trip, step one will likely happen at the Google search bar. Step two might be clicking onto the images of your target destination. The North Face, in a campaign with agency Leo Burnett Tailor Made, took advantage of this consumer behavior to keep its name top of mind with travelers considering an adventure sports excursion.

The brand and agency took pictures of athletes wearing the brand while trekking to famous locations around the world, including Brazil’s Guarita State Park and Farol do Mampimptuba, Cuillin in Scotland and Peru’s Huayna Picchu. They then updated the Wikipedia images in the articles for those locations so that now, the brand would appear in the top of Google image search results when consumers researched any of those locations — all done for a budget of zero dollars. “Our mission is to expand our frontiers so that our consumers can overcome their limits. With the ‘Top of Images’ project, we achieved our positioning and placed our products in a fully contextualized manner as items that go hand in hand with these destinations,” explained Fabricio Luzzi, CEO of The North Face Brazil in a statement.

According to the agency, the biggest obstacle of the campaign was updating the photos without attracting attention of Wikipedia moderators to sustain the brand’s presence for as long as possible, as site editors could change them at any time. The “hack” worked, at least for a while, evident in a quick Google search of some of the places mentioned in the campaign’s case study video. Further reading: Wikimedia is not pleased.

Spotted at Computex: The Worst Fake MacBook Air

It’s a common way to get a cheap laugh: mention that China doesn’t care about IP infringement and that a lot of fake products exist. There are a good number of people willing to copy just about anything if it gives them a way to make a quick Yuan. So color me unsurprised to find a fake MacBook Air at one of the small booths hidden in the corner.

The fact that it was presented at the front of a moulding company booth makes it all the more amusing. This wasn’t a system, but a picture of an iOS desktop was plastered on the ‘screen’. Someone should tell these guys about what the MacBook chassis color actually is, and how the logo isn’t fully underlined.

They also got a big agitated when I started taking pictures.
