Crash Test Dummy Failures Send Them Flying Off Roller Coaster Into Nearby Hotel

Stories about amusement parks are typically dominated by two topics: either the opening of a new attraction or the catastrophic failure of an old one. This time it was neither, as two crash test dummies designed to ensure a roller coaster was operating safely failed, causing them to be launched through the roof of a…

AMD: 7nm ‘Navi’ GPU & 'Rome' CPU to Launch in Q3

Offering a brief update on the state of future products as part of its post-earnings conference call this afternoon, AMD has confirmed that both their upcoming Rome (Zen 2) CPU and their first Navi architecture GPU will launch in the 3rd quarter of this year.

AMD’s Rome of course needs no introduction. The first product out of AMD based on their Zen 2 architecture, the chip is built on TSMC’s 7nm process and should offer some interesting performance and power efficiency improvements. Of particular note, the chip incorporates a new-to-AMD chiplet based design approach, using separate I/O and CPU dies to simplify manufacturing and allow for easier chip customization.

As AMD’s second-generation EPYC processor, we’re expecting Rome to be the big server fight for AMD – whereas first-generation EPYC was mostly to test the waters and prove AMD’s readiness, Rome will be where AMD can finally start winning major customer orders. Overall, AMD says that the CPU will be sampling this quarter and launching in Q3; though if it’s anything like Intel’s server CPU launches, then the ever-hungry major hyperscalers may end consuming all of the initial supply.

Meanwhile Navi is the codename architecture for AMD’s next generation of GPUs. The first Navi GPU, which is also being built on TSMC’s 7nm process, is set to launch in Q3 of this year. It should be noted that Navi isn’t a single GPU, but rather should be a family of GPUs (as is traditional for GPUs), so it’s not clear which exact model is launching – if it’s high-end, mid-range, or otherwise. Q3 will be 2 years since AMD’s Vega GPU architecture launched and longer still since Polaris, so AMD’s entire GPU stack is potentially up for a refresh during the Navi generation.

In terms of technology we know very little about the Navi architecture thus far. But if there’s a Q3 launch then this will no doubt soon be changing.

This is a breaking news. We are adding details as we learn them.

AMD: 7nm ‘Navi’ Consumer GPU to Launch in Q3

AMD said during its earnings conference call that it would release its codenamed Navi graphics processor in the third quarter of the year. The GPU will be the company’s first graphics solution aimed at consumers to be fabbed by TSMC using its 7 nm process technology.

AMD’s Navi architecture will be used for several GPU products, including those aimed at client computers as well as integrated GPU to be used by Sony’s next-generation PlayStation game console.

Final Destination: Crane Truck Takes Out Metal Overhead Sign Mount Right In Front Of Oncoming Car

This is a video from Sarov, Russia of a crane truck taking out a metal overhead sign mount and almost Final Destination-ing the car with the dashcam recording the incident. Close calls. I guess some people just forget what sort of vehicle they’re driving sometimes. My girlfriend? Sometimes she forgets she’s driving altogether. Or at least it seems like it. *phone rings* Why do I do this to myself?

Keep going for the full video.

Fedora 30 Linux Distro Is Here

Fedora 30, the newest release of the venerable Linux distribution that serves (in part) as the staging environment for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, was released Tuesday, bringing with it a number of improvements and performance optimizations. From a report: he most exciting aspect, for workstation/desktop users at least, is the update to GNOME 3.32. Of course, that is hardly the only notable update — the DNF package manager is getting a performance boost, for instance. In other words, this is a significant operating system upgrade that should delight both existing Fedora users and beginners alike. “Fedora 30 brings enhancements to all editions with updates to the common underlying packages, from bug fixes and performance tweaks to new versions. In Fedora 30, base updates include Bash shell 5.0, Fish 3.0, the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) 9 and Ruby 2.6. Fedora 30 also now uses the zchunk format for data compression within the DNF repository. When metadata is compressed using zchunk DNF will only download the differences between earlier copies of metadata and the current versions, saving on resources and increasing efficiency,” says The Fedora Project.

My Favorite Katana Zero Character Is This Hapless Goon I Killed Near The Start Of The Game

I’d heard stories about Strong Terry. Whispers. Rumors. Wide-eyed tales of his boldest feats. He’d be the one to bring me down, they all said. The beloved big boy who never skipped leg day would stomp all over me, even though I’m a cold-blooded samurai assassin. I wouldn’t stand a chance. Except then I killed him…

Use a Smart Speaker to Track Nights With Your Newborn

What I hated about being woken up by my newborn in the middle of the night—aside from, you know, being woken up by my newborn in the middle of the night—was learning what time it was. Hearing his cry for the third or fourth time since putting him down and then groggily opening my eyes to discover that it was only 11

Pranksters Cover MIT's Great Dome With Giant Captain America Shield To Celebrate Latest Avengers Movie

mit-captain-america-shield-1.jpg

This is some drone footage of MIT’s Great Dome, which was recently covered with a giant fabric Captain America shield by pranksters to celebrate the release of Avengers: Endgame. Some more info while I cover myself with Post-Its and pretend I’m an 8-bit video game character:

One of the jokesters — they cheekily call themselves “hackers” — reached by the Globe Sunday said dozens of people worked on the project for months, which they started planning about a year ago after learning a new Marvel movie was going to be released.

The hacker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the secretive nature of the pranks, said the current generation of MIT students grew up with the “Avengers” franchise, and that the shield was a symbol of their gratitude toward the series.

You know, I too played some pretty serious pranks when I was in college. Perhaps the biggest and best of all was the one I played on myself by not going to class and failing out senior year. Did you know they don’t give your money back if you fail? *sadly glances at most recent student loan statement, which is somehow an even higher balance than it was ten years ago* I did not.

Keep going for a couple more pictures and a drone flyover video while I admire the ductwork on the roof of that other building.
