Wizard World Just Sold Its Conventions to Fan Expo

Fans generally think of pop culture conventions as being tied to a specific city: San Diego, Chicago, New York, etc. But those conventions are usually run by larger companies—and now, after its latest acquisition, one company in particular has become the biggest of all. Fan Expo, which already runs almost a dozen…

Death Trash’s whole vibe is summed up early in its beginning area, where the tutorial messages ask you to puke. New BIOS updates will make Windows 11 support less annoying on custom-built PCs

If you’re using a pre-built desktop or laptop PC made within the last three or four years, Windows 11’s sometimes-confusing, sometimes contentious security-oriented new system requirements won’t be a problem for you—all of the security features Microsoft is requiring for the new operating system should be turned on by default. It’s a bigger problem for people who build their own computers (or who have had computers built for them), since features like the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) are often disabled by default.

Most motherboard manufacturers have already posted lists of boards that they expect to meet Windows 11’s requirements, and some of them are going a step further—releasing new BIOS updates for their motherboards’ firmware that enable the integrated TPMs in Intel and AMD processors by default. While it usually isn’t too difficult to switch the TPM on manually, each motherboard manufacturer keeps this setting in a different place, and the way the setting is labeled differs depending on whether you’re using an Intel or AMD chip or what motherboard you’re configuring.

Asus is currently taking the most comprehensive approach, with BIOS updates either available or “under testing” for the vast majority of Intel and AMD motherboards made within the last three or four years (300-, 400-, and 500-series chipsets from both Intel and AMD are broadly supported, which covers most 8th-generation and newer Intel CPUs and all of AMD’s Ryzen processors). But ASRock has released TPM-enabling BIOS updates for a handful of its newer motherboards as well, and we’d expect other motherboard-makers to follow suit in the next few months. We’ve contacted ASRock, Gigabyte, and MSI to see if they have any information to share and will update if they do.

How to Make an Emergency Cookie in Your Air Fryer

When it comes to chocolate chip cookies, I am an equal opportunity eater. Give me a hot mass of dough that’s been cooked just long enough to hold its shape, or a thin and crispy disk, and I will be more than happy. I even like those pale, cake-y things halfway between a cookie and a brownie. I will never fail,…

Wear OS is getting a multi-generational leap in power thanks to Samsung

Tomorrow is Samsung’s big event for the back half of 2021, and in addition to launching some foldable smartphones, the company is expected to reveal the Galaxy Watch 4 and the big Wear OS revamp it is working on with Google. Google is cooking up the first major Wear OS release since 2018, and Samsung is abandoning Tizen for smartwatches and going all-in on Wear OS with the Galaxy Watch 4. Last night, Samsung took the wraps off the main SoC for the Galaxy Watch 4, and compared to what Wear OS usually gets, Samsung is shipping a beast of an SoC.

The “Samsung Exynos W920” will be a multi-generational leap in performance for Wear OS. Samsung says this is a 5 nm chip with two ARM Cortex A55 cores and an ARM Mali-G68 GPU. For the always-on display mode, there’s an additional Cortex M55 CPU, which can keep the watch face ticking along while using minimal power. There’s also an integrated LTE modem for on-the-go connectivity.

Compared to Samsung’s previous smartwatch chip, the Tizen-only Exynos 9110 (10 nm, 2x Cortex A53), the company is promising “around 20 percent” better CPU performance and “ten times better graphics performance.” Remember that the Exynos 9110 is from 2018, so those comparative numbers are inflated, but at 5 nm, this is a more modern chip than Wear OS has ever seen.

Firefox 91 Pushes Privacy With Stronger New Cookie-clearing Option

WIth the release of Firefox 91 on Tuesday, Mozilla has introduced a bigger hammer for smashing the cookies that websites, advertisers and tracking companies can use to record your online behavior. From a report: The new feature, called enhanced cookie clearing, is designed to block tracking not just from a website, but also from third parties whose code appears on the site. The technology is designed to let you clear cookies for a particular website but also the more aggressive “supercookies” designed to evade lesser privacy protections. The feature is an option if you enable Firefox’s strict mode for cookie handling, which partitions website data into separate storage containers. “You can easily recognize and remove all data a website has stored on your computer, without having to worry about leftover data from third parties embedded in that website,” Mozilla said in a blog post.

Nintendo's next indie game showcase takes place on August 11th

Nintendo is gearing up for its next indie-centric event. The company has announced an Indie World Showcase for August 11th, starting at noon ET.

The stream will run for around 20 minutes and focus on second- and third-party games. While it’s unlikely Nintendo will surprise everyone with any details about the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel or the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter, it’ll probably be worth tuning in.

During a previous showcase in April, Nintendo announced the arrival of indie classic Fez on Switch, showed off the House of the Dead remake and confirmed a sequel to Oxenfree is on the way. You can watch Nintendo’s latest Indie World Showcase below.

Twitter Now in Compliance With India's New IT Rules, Government Says

Twitter is now complying with India’s new IT rules, New Delhi told a court Tuesday, in a move that is expected to ease months-long tension between the American social media network and the government of the key overseas market. From a report: A lawyer representing the Indian government told the Delhi High Court that Twitter’s recent steps — appointment of chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and resident grievance officer in the country — have made the social network “prima facie” compliant with the new law. India’s new IT rules, which were unveiled in February this year, mandates significant social media firms, among other things, to appoint officials to address on-ground concerns in the country.

NVIDIA Announces RTX A2000 Video Card: Low Profile & Low Power for ProViz

As part of a suite of SIGGRAPH-related announcements, NVIDIA this morning is announcing a new addition to their RTX line of professional video cards, the RTX A2000. Following NVIDIA’s transitional top-to-bottom product rollouts, the latest member of NVIDIA’s pro GPU lineup is the smallest and cheapest card yet, thanks in large part to its use of NVIDIA’s GA106 GPU. Paired with 6GB of VRAM and aimed in part at small form factor workstations, NVIDIA expects the card to go on sale in October.
