Five Must-Watch Anime Of Fall 2016

Compared to the summer’s plush anime selection, Fall 2016’s offerings are a little slim. We had Berserk, Orange, Mob Psycho 100, ReLIFE, 91 Days and other high-impact titles scattered across shonen, fantasy, shoujo and historical fiction genres. This season’s a little different. My top pics for this season are more…

Wielding Their Windows Phones, Microsoft Shareholders Grill CEO Satya Nadella On Device Strategy

At a meeting with shareholders Wednesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was asked numerous times what the company is doing about Windows Phones, and why do they keep hearing that Microsoft is abandoning smartphone manufacturer business. The stakeholders also asked why the company is seemingly focusing more on Android and iOS rival platforms instead of its own. From a report on GeekWire: Microsoft shareholder Dana Vance, owner of a Windows Phone and a Microsoft Band, said he received an email about the Microsoft Pix app but was surprised to learn that it was available for iPhone and Android but not Windows Phone. Ditto for Microsoft Outlook. He also alluded to reports that Microsoft has put the Band on the back burner. Given this, he asked Nadella to explain the company’s vision for its consumer devices. As part of his response, Nadella said Microsoft’s Windows camera and mail apps will include the same features as in Microsoft’s apps for other platforms. “When we control things silicon-up, that’s how we will integrate those experiences,” Nadella said. The company will “build devices that are unique and differentiated with our software capability on top of it — whether it’s Surface or Surface Studio or HoloLens or the phone — and also make our software applications available on Android and iOS and other platforms. That’s what I think is needed in order for Microsoft to help you as a user get the most out of our innovation.” Another shareholder, who says he uses his Windows Phone “18 hours a day,” said he has heard Microsoft is “stepping away from mobile.” He asked, “Can you calm me down … and tell me what your vision is for mobile?” Nadella answered, “We think about mobility broadly. In other words, we think about the mobility of the human being across all of the devices, not just the mobility of a single device. That said, we’re not stepping away or back from our focus on our mobile devices,” Nadella said. “What we are going to do is focus that effort on places where we have differentiation. If you take Windows Phone, where we are differentiated on Windows Phone is on manageability. It’s security, it’s Continuum capability — that is, the ability to have a phone that can act like a PC. So we’re going to double-down on those points of differentiation.”

Cablevision owner replacing cable with fiber, pledges 10Gbps speeds

Altice USA, which recently became the country’s fourth largest cable company by purchasing Cablevision and Suddenlink, today announced a big project to replace cable with fiber-to-the-home technology. Altice said it intends to “deliver broadband speeds of up to 10 Gbps across its footprint.”

Based in the Netherlands, Altice purchased Suddenlink in December 2015 and Cablevision in June this year. The Altice USA division has 4.1 million broadband subscribers and 3.6 million pay-TV subscribers. Counting customers who subscribe to one or more services, Altice USA has 4.6 million customers in 20 states.

Cable dominates the US broadband market, easily outperforming DSL networks that use old copper telephone lines. But fiber is generally even faster than cable, especially in upload speeds, so cable companies including Comcast have been building fiber-to-the-home in some areas.

Court Awards Damages Following Bogus DMCA Takedowns

What’s that you say? You can actually fight back against bogus copyright takedowns and win? That’s exactly what happened in this case and the guy was even awarded damages.

Topdawg Entertainment Inc., Interscope Records and Universal Music Group must pay damages after issuing false DMCA notices which damaged an artist’s reputation. Montreal hip hop artist Jonathan Emile teamed up with Kendrick Lamar on a track, but the labels wrongfully took it down from YouTube, iTunes and Soundcloud.

More Than 1M Google Accounts Breached by Malware

While malware affecting more than a million Google accounts is bad, I have to admit that the “Gooligan” name is kinda clever. This infographic shows you how Gooligan works:

As a result of a lot of hard work done by our security research teams, we revealed today a new and alarming malware campaign. The attack campaign, named Gooligan, breached the security of over one million Google accounts. The number continues to rise at an additional 13,000 breached devices each day. Our research exposes how the malware roots infected devices and steals authentication tokens that can be used to access data from Google Play, Gmail, Google Photos, Google Docs, G Suite, Google Drive, and more.

Game over: New US computer search law takes effect Thursday

(credit: Phil Roeder)

“By sitting here and doing nothing, the Senate has given consent to this expansion of government hacking and surveillance.”

Those were the words Wednesday of Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) as he failed to convince fellow senators to even hold a floor vote that could block changes to what is known as Rule 41 from taking effect Thursday.

Wyden was referencing an amended Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure, which originated from an unelected advisory committee and was signed by the Supreme Court in April. By rule, it becomes effective December 1. The measure clarifies the law allowing judges to sign warrants that let authorities hack into computers outside a judge’s jurisdiction. The rule also gives federal judges the authority to issue a warrant to search multiple computers—even without knowing who is the targeted computer owner. Previously, some judges had practiced this, while others did not.

The Power Rangers Comic Series Just Did Something Totally Crazy

Boom Studio’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic has been great at both providing some nostalgic throwbacks to the classic show and forging its own, modern identity for the series. But today’s issue adds one of the biggest twists to Power Rangers canon in over two decades.

Sharpening a Dollar Store Knife Turns It Into a Killer Blade That Easily Slices Everything

I know that it’s pretty darn obvious that if you sharpen a knife over and over again, you’ll eventually get a razor sharp edge to slice things with. But that doesn’t make it any less fun to transform a $1 knife bought from a dollar store into a beast of a blade that destroys everything as if it were descended from the…

FBI To Gain Expanded Hacking Powers as Senate Effort To Block Fails

A last-ditch effort in the Senate to block or delay rule changes that would expand the U.S. government’s hacking powers failed Wednesday, despite concerns the changes would jeopardize the privacy rights of innocent Americans and risk possible abuse by the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Reuters adds: Democratic Senator Ron Wyden attempted three times to delay the changes which, will take effect on Thursday and allow U.S. judges will be able to issue search warrants that give the FBI the authority to remotely access computers in any jurisdiction, potentially even overseas. His efforts were blocked by Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the Senate’s second-ranking Republican. The changes will allow judges to issue warrants in cases when a suspect uses anonymizing technology to conceal the location of his or her computer or for an investigation into a network of hacked or infected computers, such as a botnet.

Shooting The Burning Wick Off A Candle In Ultra Slow Motion

shooting-candle-wick-slow-motion.jpg

This is a video of the Slow-Mo Guys shooting the wick off a burning candle with a pellet gun while filming it at 28,000 frames/second. For reference, that’s 27,999 frames per second more than a single frame (aka a photograph). It takes them several attempts before they actually hit the wick, presumably because it’s difficult to shoot the wick of a candle with a pellet gun. I mean sure I could have done it on the first try, but that’s just me and my friends don’t call me the Dead-Eyed Dandy for no reason. They call me that because I only wear vests and my left eye points straight down.

Keep going for the video, but skip to 4:35 for the actual hit and sweet slow motion results.
