Netflix CEO Explains the Conversion Rate of US Dollars to Joy

Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, just sat down with the Wall Street Journal and talked about everything from the AT&T-Time Warner merger (he’s more or less neutral) to global reach (Netflix wants a large international customer base like Facebook’s). But it’s his perspective on how much money it costs to produce joy that’s particularly interesting.

The American Horror Story Crossover Is Coming, and It'll Be Even Bigger Than You Think

There’s seemingly nothing Ryan Murphy loves to do more than drop hints about what might happen on American Horror Story. Recently, we heard that Lady Gaga’s witchy Roanoke character would return in the future, and now we have a better idea of what else that future might entail—a big ol’ crossover that makes up an entire season of the show.

CenturyLink To Buy Level 3 For $34 Billion, Create a More Formidable Competitor To AT&T

In what is seen as a move to build a more formidable competitor to AT&T, rival CenturyLink today announced it is buying Level 3 Communications for about $34 billion in cash and stock. From a report on Bloomberg: Both companies have amassed giant networks to haul internet traffic through deals over the years. Level 3 is one of the largest providers used by internet services including Netflix and Google to route traffic across the web, operations that would bolster CenturyLink’s core offerings to businesses. Level 3 was the second-biggest U.S. provider of ethernet services — running high-bandwidth internet connections for companies — in the first half of this year, trailing only AT&T, according to Vertical Systems Group. CenturyLink was fifth on the list.

Impressive Flying Imperial Probe Droid Drone

imperial-probe-droid-drone.jpg

This is the Viper Imperial probe droid drone built by Youtuber ajw61185 out of foam and other lightweight materials (Specific is my middle name). As you can see, it is most impressive. That tauntaun? Not so much. If only he’d spent as much time on that as the droid he’d be a real contender in this year’s Halloween costume contest. As it stands, I’m afraid the droid alone isn’t enough to clench a victory. Trust me, I’m a professional Halloween costume contest judge. Same goes for swimming pool cannonballs. *holds up a ‘7’* You’re gonna need more weight to be great.

Keep going for a video of the droid doing its thing (presumably probing).

Researchers Use Hardware Queue Management To Vaporize Multicore Processor Bottlenecks
The future of computing is in multi-core processors. The bulk of today’s smartphones come with four or more cores, and even our desktop computers usually at least have dual cores, with quad-cores chips being quite prevalent. But with a rise in core counts also comes a need to ensure that communications between these competing resources moves

Humans Probably Caused Historic Earthquakes in LA

Human-induced earthquakes are on the rise in the United States and Canada, likely as a result of oil and gas industry practices. New research suggests this isn’t a new phenomenon, and that several quakes felt in Los Angeles during the early 20th century were likely caused by human activity.

iOS 10.1.1 will let you see your Health data again

The iOS 10.1 update fixed a lot of stuff, but it caused a major problem for some users of the Health app: data disappeared in some cases, and even resetting phones and restoring them from fresh backups wouldn’t bring it back.

That’s the problem that today’s iOS 10.1.1 update fixes—it’s available now for all devices running iOS 10, including the iPhone 5 and newer, the fourth-generation iPad and newer, the iPad Mini 2 and newer, both iPad Pros, and the sixth-generation iPod Touch.

Apple has told us that the update should restore “missing” health data as well as prevent future data from disappearing. If you’ve been having this problem since you installed iOS 10.1, you should install the update as soon as you can.

MacBook Pro (2016) Disappointment Pushes Some Apple Loyalists To Ubuntu Linux

Linux distributions have emerged as one of the beneficiaries in the aftermath of the MacBook Pros launch. Many people aren’t pleased with the offering and prices of Apple’s three new laptops and some of them are resorting to Linux-powered laptops. From a report on BetaNews: Immediately after the Apple Keynote, famed Ubuntu laptop and desktop seller, System76, saw a huge jump in traffic from people looking to buy its machines. The traffic was so intense, that it needed to upgrade servers to keep up, it said. “We experienced much more traffic than we had prepared for, the website didn’t go hard down but experienced slowness. We had to scale up to return to normal. It was a pretty big surge, I don’t have the details in front of me at the moment but I’ve not really heard of anything like this before. People being so underwhelmed by a product that immediately following a new product release they actively seek out competitor’s products,” says Ryan Sipes, Community Manager, System76. I decided to compare specifications and pricing on my own, so I headed to both Apple.com and System76.com to compare. Apple’s new 15-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,400. This machine has a Quad-core Sklyake i7, maxes out at 16GB of RAM, has an NVMe 256GB SSD, and a Radeon Pro 450 with a paltry 2GB memory. Alternatively, I headed to System76 and configured its 15-inch Oryx Pro. I closely matched the MacBook Pro specs, with a Quad-core Sklyake i7 and NVMe 256GB SSD. Instead of 16GB of RAM as found on the Apple, I configured with 32GB (you can go up to 64GB if needed). By default, it comes with a 6GB Nvidia GTX 1060. The price? Less than $2,000! In other words, the System76 machine with much better specs is less expensive than Apple’s.
