I’m still not sure what Scalebound is—but I definitely want it

COLOGNE, Germany—What is Scalebound? A slick, action-packed Platinum Games (makers of the Bayonetta and Devil May Cry games) combo-fest? A fantasy RPG with dungeons and dragons and magic spells? An epic story-based adventure? Two years after its announcement—and three since development began—I’m still not sure. Heck, I don’t think even Microsoft knows.

Scalebound‘s Gamescom outing is the latest in a long line of short video clips, technical teases, and scripted battles that have been released since E3 2014, where the game was first revealed in spectacular fashion at Microsoft’s press conference. Its debut trailer—which introduced a cocky 20-something headphone-wearing hipster named Drew and his hulking great dragon Thuban—drew criticism for the apparent douchbaggery of its lead, but there was no denying the overall appeal. A new Platinum Games title with dragons that fight and breathe fire and four-player co-op? Shut up and take all of my money.

What we know about Scalebound so far is that Drew and Thuban fight alongside each other, rather than with each other, and that it’s an open-world game set in “Draconis” with RPG-like elements and real-time combat. The biggest reveal came during Gamescom 2015, when Microsoft dropped a lengthy gameplay trailer showing Drew riding Thuban—complete with light human-to-dragon banter—into battle against a group of heavily armoured soldiers. Cue some sword swinging, crossbow firing, and plenty of random numbers popping up all over the screen. Oh, and a fight against a giant mantis culminating in a fierce fire-breathing attack from Thuban.

Tech Issues Cause Most Drone Accidents

Did you know that tech issues cause most drone crashes? I didn’t. I would have bet you money that pilot error would have been the biggest cause of drone crashes (with surface to air missiles and farmer’s shotguns tying for second).

World-first research has found technical problems rather than operator errors are behind the majority of drone accidents, leading to a call for further safeguards for the industry. Researchers Dr Graham Wild and Dr Glenn Baxter from RMIT University’s School of Engineering, along with John Murray from Edith Cowan University, completed the first examination of more than 150 reported civil incidents around the world involving drones, or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).

Intel to Deliver Leading Platform for Artificial Intelligence

Intel is known for pushing the edge of technology innovation, both creating and leading major advancements in the industry. We did it first with the move from mainframes to standards-based servers, and then again with the move to cloud computing and software-defined infrastructure. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the next big wave of compute that will transform the way businesses operate and how people engage with the world. And while Intel is inherently well-positioned to support the machine learning revolution — after all, Intel processors power more than 97 percent of servers deployed to support machine learning workloads — we know that to truly lead the industry, we must do more. Our industry needs breakthrough compute capability — capability that is both scalable and open — to enable innovation across the broad developer community.

AMD Bundles Together Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and AMD FX CPUs

Buying new hardware is almost always exciting, and purchases are even sweeter when they come with included gifts. In spirit of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided receiving DX12 support in the coming weeks AMD is bundling the game with select AMD FX CPU’s through participating retailers.

The Deus Ex series has been well revered since its inception. The breadth of player choice, storytelling, and player customization was a big step in gaming, and the original Deus Ex is still regarded by many as the best PC game ever made. With varying degrees of success, the series has continued to find success in the same formula started back in 2000.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided follows the aftermath of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and continues the social commentary on human augmentation. Following the golden era of human augmentation augmented humans are being deemed outcasts and separated from the rest of society. From this backdrop the player continues as Adam Jensen, now an experienced covert agent, with the intent to unravel the building conspiracy against mankind.

Starting this week, AMD is providing bundles with participating vendors on select 6- and 8- core FX processors. The purpose behind this bundle – besides clearing out FX inventory, I suspect – is to further promote DirectX 12, albeit in a roundabout fashion. In the coming weeks Mankind Divided will be receiving a patch that will enable DX12 support. With DX12 the game will have better multi-threading support for large core count CPUs. Given the relatively weak single-threaded performance of AMD’s CPUs, this should help these CPUs close the performance gap.

Anyhow, you’ll want to check with your retailer before purchase, but Newegg and the rest of the usual suspects should be participating. While looking around on Newegg I noticed that not all FX CPUs are listed as participating, so vigilance is advised before purchase even at participating retailers. The promotion will run from August 23, 2016 to November 14, 2016 or until game codes run out, whichever comes first.

Those wishing to read more on Deus Ex: Mankind provided, find a vendor, or redeem their code can do so at the AMD Deus Ex: Mankind provided promotion page.

You’re a (chess) wizard, Bethanie

By recreating the iconic Wizard’s Chess set from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (sorry America, it’s Philosopher, not Sorcerer), 18-year-old Jambassador Bethanie Fentiman has become my new hero.

wizard's chess

Ron, you don’t suppose this is going to be like… ‘real’ wizard’s chess, do you?

Playing on an idea she’d had last year, Bethanie decided to recreate the chess board from the book/movie as part of her A Level coursework (putting everything I ever created at school to utter shame), utilising the knowledge and support of her fellow Jammers from the Kent Raspberry Jam community.

After searching through the internet for inspiration, she stumbled upon an Instructables guide for building an Arduino-powered chess robot, which gave her a basis on which to build her system of stepper motors, drawer runners, gears, magnets, and so on.

Harry Potter and the ‘it’s almost complete’ Wizard’s Chess board

The next issue she faced in her quest for ultimate wizarding glory was to figure out how to actually play chess! Without any chess-playing knowhow, Bethanie either needed to learn quickly or…cheat a bit. So she looked up the legal moves of each piece, coding them into the programme, therefore allowing her to move on with the project without the need to monotonously learn the rules to the game.

Hermione would never approve.

There were a few snags along the way – mainly due to problems with measuring. But once assembled, everything was looking good.

We’ve got our fingers crossed that Bethanie replaces the pieces in time with some battling replicas from the movie.

On a minimal budget, Bethanie procured her chess pieces from a local charity shop, managing to get the board itself laser-cut for free, thanks to her school’s technology department.

Now complete, the board has begun its own ‘Wizard Chess Tour’, visiting various Raspberry Jams across the country. Its first stop was in Harlow, and more recently, Bethanie has taken the board to the August Covent Garden Jam.

MAGIC!

You can find out more about the Wizard’s Chess board via the Kent Jams Twitter account and website. And you’d like the board to visit your own Raspberry Jam event… send Bethanie word by owl and see what she says!

Google To Punish Mobile Websites That Annoy Visitors With Pop-ups
Most people would agree that pop-ups, in general, are annoying. It’s one thing if a website wants you to confirm that you’re okay accepting cookies, but it’s quite another when a pop-up ad covers the content you’re trying to read after clicking on an interesting link, especially on a mobile device. Well, Google recognizes this and is making
