Surprise, More Russian Athletes Banned From Rio Olympics For Doping

Well everything about Rio keeps getting worse. The Zika-infested
city, with it’s shit-laden waters
, and beaches rife with human remains
will be hosting fewer and fewer athletes, many of whom are backing out for totally understandable reasons. As of today that list of non-competitors now includes the entirety of Russia’s weightlifting team, the AP reports.

Slashdot Asks: Free Upgrade To Windows 10 Ends Today: What's Your Thought On This?

Exactly one year ago, Microsoft released Windows 10 to the general public. The latest version of company’s desktop operating system brought with it Cortana, and Windows Hello among other features. While users have lauded Windows 10 for performance improvements, the Redmond-based company’s aggressive upgrade tactics have spoiled the experience for many. Whether it was installing Windows 10 on computers without users’ consent, or eating up tons of bandwidth for users who couldn’t afford it, or whether it was deceptive dialog boxes, Microsoft definitely deserves a lot of blame — and rightfully, a bunch of lawsuits. But many of these things, hopefully, will end today — July 29, 2016 (or to be exact, Saturday morning 5:59am EDT / 2:59am PDT) Today is officially the last day when eligible Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers could be upgraded to Windows 10 for free of charge. After this, an upgrade to Windows 10 will set you back by at least $119. We asked you a couple of weeks ago whether or not would you recommend someone to update their computer to Windows 10, and the vast majority of you insisted against it. What’s your thought on this now? Those who opt out of updating to Windows 10 will also miss the Anniversary Update — and its features — which Microsoft plans to release on August 2 for free of charge.

Welcome to the age of ancient DNA sequencing

The greatest technological revolution in human history arguably happened about 12,000 years ago, when humans first stopped living as hunter gatherers and became farmers. This so-called Neolithic Revolution transformed human culture, our genomes, and our ecosystems. But the origins of farming have remained a mystery. Was there one eureka moment, when an early Neolithic person realized the seeds they scattered in fall had sprouted into grains two seasons later? Or, more intriguingly, did several groups of people start farming independently?

Two new studies published this month in Science and Nature magazines use DNA analysis of ancient human bones to conclude that farming arose in multiple regions simultaneously. The Science study focused on four farmers who lived between 9,000 and 10,000 years ago in the mountainous Zagros region of Iran. The Nature study analyzed 44 individuals (farmers as well as hunter-gatherers) from Armenia, Turkey, Israel, Jordan and Iran, who lived between 14,000 and 3,500 years ago. By sequencing parts of these ancient people’s DNA, researchers could determine their likely ancestry, as well as what populations are descended from them today. They conclude that there are at least two groups of ancient humans who discovered farming separately in the Middle East, then exported the Neolithic revolution across large parts of the continent.

The secrets of ancient DNA

Over the past decade, modern DNA sequencing techniques have allowed scientists to recover strands of genetic material from decayed bones that have been infused with microbes over thousands of years. Now, those techniques are widely accessible and highly refined. It starts with how researchers pick their bones. If possible, they’ll extract DNA from the petrous bone in the inner ear, a goldmine for genetic material that can yield roughly 100 times more ancient DNA than other parts of the skeleton. Then researchers use a process called in-solution hybridization, which uses special probes made from DNA or RNA that attach to the desired ancient human DNA, fishing it out of a soup of other genetic material from other organisms that accumulated in the decomposing bone. Techniques like these are making it easier than ever for us to sequence ancient DNA and reconstruct the human past.

Belgium Scientists Use Solar-Powered Water Filtering Machine To Help Turn Urine To Beer

urine-beer.jpg

Belgium scientists recently demonstrated a simple solar-powered water cleaning system that can filter urine into drinkable water. They then used this water to brew a lager beer they’re calling ‘From Sewer To Brewer’, some would call ‘Pissbrew’, and anybody at the bar would not order.

“We can make the best beer in the world starting from urine,” said Denis De Wilde, a brewer in Ghent, Belgium, who used a special machine to extract clean water from urine and then turn that water into a lager dubbed “From Sewer to Brewer.”

The urine is collected in a tank and heated in a solar-powered boiler. As the water evaporates, it passes through a membrane that filters out the remaining nutrients from the liquid.

Why even bother filtering the urine? It’s urine — it’s practically half-beer already. You could probably save money on the brewing process by just starting with urine instead of water. I won’t tell anybody. Especially not any of the people I’m trying to get to drink one. I’m a great friend.

Thanks to Slammer and Charlie H, both of whom bragged about turning beer into urine since they were in high school.

io9 Review: The Killing Joke Movie Is Stuck in the Worst Parts of the Past

The biggest problem with The Killing Joke movie’s portrayal of Batgirl goes beyond a poor approach to a female character. Its biggest problem is that what it adds to Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s original 1988 comic is so pointless, that its shoddy treatment of Barbara Gordon becomes all the more insulting.

Watching Toothbrushes Melt Is So Incredibly Satisfying

Humanity’s connection to fire dates back to when our earliest ancestors realized it could be used for warmth and survival. Why do you think staring into a campfire is so mesmerizing? It probably also explains why watching toothbrushes slowly melt and shrivel away is so utterly fascinating. That, or deep down you’re secretly harboring bad feelings towards your dentist.

Sony announces PlayStation VR space requirements—is your room big enough?

This PlayStation VR promotional pamphlet page spells out some surprising room-space requirements for the system. (credit: Imgur)

As Sony approaches the October launch of its first major virtual reality product, PlayStation VR, the company has begun to publish more info about its system. On Friday, advertising pamphlets revealed a previously unknown aspect: its space requirements.

The amount of suggested minimum space may surprise some players. The pamphlet image, posted anonymously on Imgur and found by Polygon, suggests that players dedicate 11.8′ of depth and 6.2′ of width to their PSVR play area. This includes a two-foot dead zone directly in front of a single PlayStation Camera, which must be set up for tracking purposes, and a few more feet back to position a chair so that players can look and wave arms all around their play space.

The pamphlet also makes clear that players cannot play very far from the camera. PSVR requires a specific just-close-enough sweet spot to track the system’s headset, Move wands, and DualShock 4 controllers. Ideally, players will place a chair in that PSVR zone, as the pamphlet suggests players “remain seated whenever possible.” If a particular game asks players to stand up, that may require a repositioning of the PS Camera to track full body height.

WhatsApp Isn't Fully Deleting Its 'Deleted' Chats

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp retains and stores chat logs even after those messages have been deleted, according to iOS researcher Jonathan Zdziarski. The Verge reports: Examining disk images taken from the most recent version of the app, Zdziarski found that the software retains and stores a forensic trace of the chat logs even after the chats have been deleted, creating a potential treasure trove of information for anyone with physical access to the device. The same data could also be recoverable through any remote backup systems in place. In most cases, the data is marked as deleted by the app itself — but because it has not been overwritten, it is still recoverable through forensic tools. Zdziarski attributed the problem to the SQLite library used in coding the app, which does not overwrite by default. WhatsApp was applauded by many privacy advocates for switching to default end-to-end encryption through the Signal protocol, a process that completed this April. But that system only protects data in transit, preventing carriers and other intermediaries from spying on conversations as they travel across the network.
