Elon Musk’s X Corp. is serving a subpoena on Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), days after Warren urged the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch an investigation into Musk’s dual role running Tesla and Twitter.

Musk’s subpoena demands documents and communications related to Warren’s letter to the SEC, as well as Warren’s communications with the SEC and Federal Trade Commission. Musk is seeking documents going back to October 27, 2022, the day he completed his $44 billion purchase of Twitter.

Warren’s July 17 letter urged the SEC to investigate Tesla “regarding the actions of its Board of Directors in managing the apparent conflicts of its Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk.” She wrote that Musk’s actions while running Twitter and Tesla simultaneously “have raised concerns about conflicts of interest, misappropriation of corporate assets, and other negative impacts to Tesla shareholders. Despite recent and repeated calls from investors to address these actions, the Board appears to have failed to uphold its legal duty to ensure that Mr. Musk act in the best interest of Tesla.”

‘Borderlands’ movie is set to be released next August

The Borderlands movie is finally getting a release date. According to a tweet from the game’s official Twitter account it will premiere in theaters on August 9th, 2024.

The film, directed by Eli Roth (best known for Hostel) is based on the popular video game of the same name. Borderlands follows Lilith (Cate Blanchett), a treasure hunter who returns to her home planet of Pandora (unrelated to the Avatar movie). She teams up with Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Arian Greenblatt), Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Claptrap (Jack Black) to find the missing daughter of Atlas.

A first look was released last year, though there’s no official trailer yet. It’s peculiar that they’ve decided to announce the release date for the movie more than a year out. What makes it even more odd is that the movie had reportedly wrapped up filming over two years ago in June 2021.

Delays for video game-based movies seem to be increasingly common. The Uncharted movie was delayed several months from its original release date. And when it did release, the film saw mixed reviews, including from Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar, who said the Uncharted movie “boldly goes nowhere. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also saw delays in the film’s release. However, that movie set box office records for a video game movie. Barring any further delays, fans should expect to see Borderlands in theaters next year.

Fry Food Without Burning Your Beautiful Hands

Fried food is art, and fish houses, purveyors of fried chicken, and Southern gas stations have it making down to a science. But there is something deeply satisfying about transforming a pale tenderloin into a crunchy, golden chicken tender in the comfort of your own kitchen. It can also be messy, smelly, and…

Report: Apple has already built its own ChatGPT-like chatbot

The Siri interface on an iPhone

Apple has built its own large language model (LLM) AI framework and associated chatbot service similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s ChatGPT-based Bing Chat, according to a new report.

The project is codenamed “Ajax” internally, the sources say, though some engineers within the company colloquially refer to it as “Apple GPT.” It is built on top of Google machine learning framework Jax and runs on Google Cloud.

The news comes via an article from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who cites “people with knowledge of the efforts.” Gurman has generally been accurate in his reports citing sources like these in the past, though he has seemingly misinterpreted what he was told on rare occasions.

‘Mind Blowing’ Trojan Planet Suspected of Sharing the Same Orbit as Its Sibling

A group of radio telescopes in the Chilean desert was aimed at a young star system 400 light years away when it detected something unusual: a cloud of debris chasing a planet along the same orbit. Google Starts the GA Rollout of Its Privacy Sandbox APIs To All Chrome Users

Google continues the rollout of its Privacy Sandbox APIs — its replacement for tracking cookies for the online advertising industry. From a report: Today, right on schedule and in time for the launch of Chrome 115 into the stable release channel, Google announced that it will now start enabling the relevance and measurement APIs in its browser. This will be a gradual rollout, with Google aiming for a 99% availability by mid-August. At this point, Google doesn’t expect to make any major changes to the APIs. This includes virtually all of the core Privacy Sandbox features, including Topics, Protected Audience, Attribution Reporting, Private Aggregation, Shared Storage and Fenced Frames. It’s worth noting that for the time being, Privacy Sandbox will run in parallel with third-party cookies in the browser. It won’t be until early 2024 that Google will deprecate third-party cookies for 1% of Chrome users. After that, the process will speed up though and Google will deprecate these cookies for all users by the second half of 2024.

Use the 'Hierarchy of Needs' to Find Your Perfect Job

Let’s take it back to that introductory psychology course you took in college for a moment: Remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? The Best IMAX Movies Still Need a Palm Pilot To Work

Ahead of the Oppenheimer release, IMAX’s TikTok showed the massive 70mm film print and special IMAX extensions. The video interestingly featured an emulated Palm m130, commonly known as a Palm Pilot, a 2002 device running on a Motorola 33MHz DragonBall VZ processor and Palm OS 4.1. From a report: In an IMAX theater, the m130’s job is to control the quick turn reel unit, or QTRU for short. (For many years, it appears, a non-emulated m130 sat holstered in most theaters.) The QTRU’s job is to control the platters, which are those large horizontal shelves where all of a film’s many reels are stitched together, stored, and then quickly spun out to and from the projector. The IMAX 1570 projector moves film at a little under six feet per second, so it’s all happening really fast.

The m130 is apparently crucial to keeping the thing humming — “PALM PILOT MUST BE ON ALL THE TIME,” reads a notice above an image of a different m130 that has since been passed around the internet — but doesn’t often need to be used. “I’ve never had to interact with the Palm Pilot,” says one person familiar with the technology. “It’s really just a status screen.” Its job is to keep the QTRU moving at a consistent speed and to help keep the film’s video in sync with its audio.
