Google Owes $338.7 Million in Chromecast Patent Case, US Jury Says

Alphabet’s Google violated a software developer’s patent rights with its remote-streaming technology and must pay $338.7 million in damages, a federal jury in Waco, Texas decided on Friday. From a report: The jury found that Google’s Chromecast and other devices infringe patents owned by Touchstream Technologies related to streaming videos from one screen to another. Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said on Monday that the company will appeal the verdict and has “always developed technology independently and competed on the merits of our ideas.” Touchstream attorney Ryan Dykal said on Monday that Touchstream was pleased with the verdict. New York-based Touchstream, which also does business as Shodogg, said in its 2021 lawsuit that founder David Strober invented technology in 2010 to “move” videos from a small device like a smartphone to a larger device like a television.

Apple Vision Pro developer kits are available now

If Apple is going to make the Vision Pro a success, it’s going to need compelling apps — and that means giving developers hardware ahead of time. Accordingly, the company is now making Vision Pro developer kits available. If you qualify, you’ll get a loaned mixed reality headset as well as help with setup, expert “check-ins” and extra support requests beyond what developers normally get.

The operative term, as you might guess, is “if.” You’re submitting an application, not buying a product like the old Apple Silicon Developer Transition Kit. In addition to being part of the Apple Developer Program, you’ll need to detail your existing apps and overall team talent. The company will favor creators whose app “takes advantage” of the Vision Pro’s features. You can’t just assume you’ll get a headset, then, and you’re less likely to get one if you’re a newcomer or simply porting an iPad app. You’ll have to be content with the visionOS beta software if you don’t make the cut.

You also can’t use the wearable for bragging rights. Apple requires that developers keep the Vision Pro in a secure workspace that only authorized team members can access. The company can also request a unit return at any time. Don’t expect many leaked details, in other words.

The current kit may only end up in the hands of larger developers as a result. However, the launch shows how Apple intends to court app creators, and what titles you’re likely to see when Vision Pro arrives early next year. The focus is on polished experiences that help sell the concept, rather than a huge catalog. That’s not surprising when the Vision Pro is a $3,499 device aimed at professionals and enthusiasts, but you may have to wait a while before small studios release apps based on real-world testing.

Twitter CEO teases banking and payment plans in memo about X rebrand

Twitter’s rebrand to X is officially underway, and CEO Linda Yaccarino has offered some new clues about what it may mean for the company. In a memo reported byCNBC, Yaccarino suggested that payments and banking features could feature prominently in Elon Musk’s new vision.

“Our usage is at an all time high and we’ll continue to delight our entire community with new experiences in audio, video, messaging, payments, banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities,” she wrote.

It’s long been rumored that Musk is keen to bring banking features to Twitter. In January, the Financial Timesreported that he wanted “to offer fintech services such as peer-to-peer transactions, savings accounts and debit cards” to users, as well as additional tipping and shopping features. The paper reported the company had applied for regulatory paperwork necessary to offer such features in the US, but the executive reportedly overseeing the project departed in February.

Yaccarino’s memo suggests those plans have been revived, though it’s light on specifics. Musk has previously talked about his desire to turn Twitter into an “everything app” akin to WeChat in China, where the messaging app is central to users’ daily activities.

Overall, Yaccarino’s memo is notably vague. She said that X would “go even further to transform the global town square” and cited recent updates the company has made around creator monetization and longform content. “Many companies say they want to move fast — but we enjoy moving at the speed of light, and when we do, that’s X,” she wrote. “With X, we serve our entire community of users and customers by working tirelessly to preserve free expression and choice, create limitless interactivity, and create a marketplace that enables the economic success of all its participants.”

Elon Musk has shown off the new branding logo for the upcoming move from Twitter to Musk’s self-proclaimed “everything app,” X. Musk rushes out new Twitter logo—it’s just an X that someone tweeted at him

Twitter has replaced its longtime bird logo with an X in order to fit owner Elon Musk’s preferred aesthetic. Musk is famously a fan of the letter X, applying it to everything from his companies to his children’s names.

The branding change comes about three months after Musk officially replaced Twitter the company with a successor firm called X Corp. Over the weekend, Musk wrote that “soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds,” and invited users to come up with a new logo. He also wrote that a tweet will now be called an “X,” and noted that his X.com domain now redirects to Twitter.

Musk chose a logo offered by a Twitter user but wrote that it will probably be changed later and “certainly will be refined.” The X logo was suggested yesterday by Sawyer Merritt, who initially said it had been used for a now-discontinued podcast about Musk.

Zenbleed: an AMD Zen 2 speculative vulnerability

Tavis Ormandy reports
on a vulnerability that he has found in “all Zen 2 class processors
from AMD. (Wayback Machine link as the original site is overloaded.) It can
allow local attackers to recover data used in string
operations; “If you remove the first word from the string ‘hello world’,
what should the result be? This is the story of how we discovered that the
answer could be your root password!
” The report has lots of details,
including an exploit; AMD has released a microcode
update
to address the problem.

We now know that basic operations like strlen, memcpy and strcmp will use
the vector registers – so we can effectively spy on those operations
happening anywhere on the system! It doesn’t matter if they’re happening in
other virtual machines, sandboxes, containers, processes, whatever!

This works because the register file is shared by everything on the same
physical core. In fact, two hyperthreads even share the same physical
register file.

Tesla misses deadline to inform NHTSA about Autopilot problems

On July 3, 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made public a letter it sent Tesla in August 2022, demanding that the company provide updated responses to some questions. NHTSA is investigating the performance of Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system after identifying more than a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles struck stopped emergency vehicles. The agency is also investigating whether Tesla vehicles adequately ensure drivers are paying attention when using the Autopilot system.

Following a string of notable crashes, NHTSA officially initiated an investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system. And on July 3, NHTSA wrote to Tesla again, asking the automaker for updated information by July 19. As far as anyone can tell, that didn’t happen.

Recalls galore

If NHTSA decides to issue a recall, it wouldn’t be the first time. Tesla has faced a significant number of recalls over the past decade, covering various issues ranging from seatbelts to battery-related concerns.

Flip Phones Are Having a Moment

What’s old is hot again, and flip phones are so very hot right now. From a report: These phones are a far cry from the phone that you mastered T9 texting on in college. Today’s flip phones are garden-variety 2023 smartphones that happen to fold in half — plus a screen on the front cover. They’ve been making a kind of comeback over the past few years, but until now, they’ve existed in the shadows of their bigger, pricier fold-style counterparts. That’s understandable, considering that their small cover screens haven’t been good for much more than checking the weather and pressing pause on a podcast. But that’s all changing this year: in a round of updates from Motorola, Oppo, and very likely Samsung next, cover screens are getting much larger and way more useful. And that’s a big deal.

Samsung will likely announce its fifth-generation Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 this week at Unpacked, which has become its annual summer foldable-fest. They’ll be thinner and lighter than last year’s models — that’s what TM Roh told us, anyway — and will both likely use new hinges that fold totally flat. The Z Flip 5 is heavily rumored to come with a much bigger cover screen than previous generations. The Z Fold 5? Well, rumors point to a very boring update, frankly. […] The previous generation of flip-style phones felt like a regular phone with a smartwatch on the front — good for checking quick information but not a lot more. The new flippable cover screens sit in a more comfortable place between a smartwatch and a full-size phone. They’re big enough to provide a lot more information at a glance than a watch, but you can’t comfortably do everything you’d do on a normal phone screen. As a result, you get a little bit of your attention back that you would have spent mindlessly scrolling Instagram when all you wanted to do was check the weather.
