'Black Mirror' returns in June with its 'most unpredictable season yet'

Following a three-year hiatus, Netflix revealed on Wednesday that Black Mirror’s latest season will begin streaming in June. In an interview on the Tudum blog, series creator Charlie Brooker claimed Black Mirror’s latest episodes would surprise fans. “Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect,” he told the blog, adding the new season would tackle tropes he “previously sworn blind the show would never do.”

If nothing else, season six will feature Black Mirror’s most stacked cast to date. Some of the actors that lent their talents to the production include Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone), Himesh Patel (Station Eleven), Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Rory Culkin (Columbus) and Salma Hayek Pinault (Frida), among many others.

News that Netflix was working on a new Black Mirror season first surfaced nearly a year ago. At the time, it was rumored the anthology’s newest episodes would be more cinematic in scope, something the teaser trailer appears to confirm. After the past two seasons left critics and fans feeling the anthology had lost much of its incisive edge, it has a lot to prove.

Tetris’ creators reveal the game’s greatest unsolved mysteries

Despite creating one of the most recognizable video games of all time, Tetris creators Alexey Pajitnov (who first coded the game in Russia) and Henk Rogers (who was instrumental in bringing the game to prominence in the West) have not been all that recognizable to the general public. That has started to change, though, with the recent release of Apple TV’s Tetris movie, which dramatizes the real-life story of the pair’s unlikely friendship and business partnership.

In Ars Technica’s latest Unsolved Mysteries video, Pajitnov and Rogers went all the way back to the game’s earliest origins. That includes the origin of “the Tetris song,” aka Korobeiniki, which Game Boy Tetris fans have had stuck in their heads for decades now.

“In 1988, when I first published Tetris in Japan… I knew somehow that Alexey didn’t want Tetris associated with the Cold War side of Russia or the Soviet Union at the time,” Rogers told Ars. “So I looked back in the history of Russia and found some folk songs.”

Commerce Dept. Outlines Plans To Fund Cutting-Edge Chip Research

The Biden administration outlined plans on Tuesday to propel research on the type of cutting-edge microchips needed to power computers, cars and other devices, saying it would establish a new national organization with locations in various parts of the United States. From a report: The Commerce Department, which is in charge of the administration’s efforts to revitalize the American chip industry, said its new National Semiconductor Technology Center would bring together companies, universities and others to collaborate on next-generation chip technology. The organization would include a string of research centers, the locations of which have yet to be chosen, and aim to be operational by the end of this year.

The organization would help “regain America’s leadership in research and development and technologies of the future and, importantly, make sure we stay there for decades to come,” Gina Raimondo, the commerce secretary, said in a briefing Monday. “It’s a place where industry and academia and start-ups and investors can come together to solve the biggest, grandest challenges and set priorities,” she added. The plans are part of the Biden administration’s effort to reinvigorate semiconductor manufacturing and ensure that the United States has a steady supply of chips necessary to feed its factories and support its national defense. The Commerce Department has been charged with doling out $50 billion to revitalize the industry, including $11 billion devoted to research and development.

How to Turn a Bad Run Around

Last Wednesday, I was trudging up a hill barely able to breathe. Something was constricting my chest, and I wasn’t sure whether to blame a too-tight sports bra, the heart rate monitor I had wedged underneath it, my spring allergies, or my asthma acting up. (In hindsight: probably all four.) That wasn’t my only source…

Bosch To Buy Chipmaker TSI, Invest $1.5 Billion in US Plant

Robert Bosch is acquiring US chipmaker TSI Semiconductors and plans to invest more than $1.5 billion in its California foundry, expanding the German company’s global bet on chips. From a report: The world’s biggest auto-parts supplier plans to retool and modernize TSI’s Roseville site with a target to start producing silicon carbide chips there from 2026, Bosch said Wednesday. The company expects 30% annual demand growth for this type of chip, commonly used in power management that’s beneficial to electric cars. “We step into a market which is developing very fast,” Chief Executive Officer Stefan Hartung said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “The new platforms of electric vehicles — it doesn’t matter where they are produced in the world — are mostly betting on silicon carbide technology.” Financial terms for the deal weren’t disclosed beyond the planned investment at the foundry, which is also subject to regulatory approval. Bosch said the full scope of future spending will “heavily depend” on federal funding opportunities.

Like viewing in FM vs. AM: New black hole image reveals “fluffier” ring

Astronomers today unveiled new images of the black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, showing both a fluffier version of the black hole’s glowing ring and its powerful jet together in the same image for the first time. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) first imaged the black hole in 2017; this new image is based on data collected by the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA), which captured radio emissions in a slightly different but scientifically significant wavelength. The details of the new observational data, image processing methods, and associated computer simulations are described in a new paper published in the journal Nature.

“This is the first image where we are able to pin down where the ring is relative to the powerful jet escaping out of the central black hole,” said co-author Kazunori Akiyama of MIT’s Haystack Observatory, who developed the imaging software used to visualize the black hole. “Now we can start to address questions such as how particles are accelerated and heated and many other mysteries around the black hole more deeply.”

As we’ve reported previously, the EHT is actually a collection of telescopes scattered around the globe, including hardware from Hawaii to Europe and from the South Pole to Greenland. The “telescope” is created by a process called interferometry, which uses light captured at different locations to build an image with a resolution that is the equivalent of a giant telescope (a telescope so big, it’s as if it were as large as the distance between the most distant locations of the individual telescopes).

Amazon knocks up to 41 percent off Govee smart lights

Philips Hue might command much of the attention when it comes to smart light bulbs, but there are other options that allow you to control your home lighting from your phone without having to spend quite as much. Govee, for instance, offers some more affordable solutions, and several of the company’s products are currently on sale at Amazon. Among them is a two-pack of 33-foot, color-changing LED strips. After a $20 coupon is applied at checkout, the light strips can be all yours for $57. That’s $25 off the typical price.

Govee’s strip lights have a protective coating that’s said to protect them from moisture and dust. The company says that, as opposed to RGB lighting, its RGBIC approach enables it to display “stunning segmented colors” on a line.

You can connect the strips directly to your WiFi router and control them using Alexa or Google Assistant. Otherwise, you can customize the lighting through Govee’s app. There’s also the option to sync the lighting to music. It’s worth noting that the bundle comes with one power adaptor that has two connection ports, so you’ll need to keep the two LED strips next to each other.

Also in Govee’s Amazon sale (which includes a set of string lights that has dropped in price by 41 percent), there’s a solid deal on a floor lamp. This product works with Alexa and it has support for music sync as well. The lamp has multiple sections, each of which can display different colors. Curiously, the Amazon listing notes that buyers will either be sent an old or a new version at random. The old one is 55.5 inches, while the newer smart lamp measures 53.7 inches. In any case, you can currently snap one up for $80, which is $20 off the usual price.

The most important part of the new Lamborghini Revuelto? Character.

Ten years ago, the then-“holy trinity” of supercars kicked off a new era of performance by showing the world that electrification wasn’t just for drivers looking to stretch a mile. That year, Ferrari, Porsche, and McLaren debuted limited-run hybrids that informed what would soon come to pass for each brand, with all three embracing electrons for the powertrains of at least one of their production vehicles.

Lamborghini’s name has been mostly absent from the discussion of hybrid supercars, and while the company teased us with electrified possibilities over the years, it was happy to let its V10 and V12 engines do all the talking. Now, the V10s are screaming off into the sunset, and Lamborghini is on the precipice of a new electrified future, one that begins with the Revuelto, the replacement for the V12 Aventador and the brand’s first production plug-in hybrid.

During the 2023 New York International Auto Show, Ars had a chance to check out the Revuelto up close and to speak to Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr about the car’s development, its challenges, and what to expect from Lamborghini in the future.
