GTA Online's upcoming monthly subscription gives perks to frequent players

Now that GTA Online is available on the latest consoles, Rockstar wants to spice up the service for its most dedicated players. The developer is launching a $6 per month GTA+ subscription that provides regular perks for GTAO players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. You’ll get $500,000 in virtual cash each month, unlocks for past game updates, vehicle upgrades and other bonuses. You can also buy improved Shark Cards with real money to get more bonus in-game cash.

In the first month, you’ll receive a supercar with an early-access upgrade, three wardrobe items, waived LS Car Meet Membership fees and multiplied bonuses for two race series, among other extras. You’ll need to claim benefits before they expire.

Rockstar said events will carry on “as normal” for all players, so you won’t find yourself locked out of key content if you’d rather play for free. Whether or not GTA+ is a good thing isn’t clear, though. While it may represent a better value than spending real money every time you want a boost for in-game currency, it might also leave you at a disadvantage if you can’t justify the monthly fee or a hardware upgrade.

Epic Isn't Satisfied by Google's App Store Billing Stunt

Google announced on Wednesday that it would test letting Android developers use their own billing systems in their apps, the first step in what could lead to a dramatic reshaping of the app economy. However, Epic Games, which has been a strong proponent for opening app marketplaces and sued Google after the search giant removed Fortnite from Google Play for including direct payments, still isn’t happy. From a report: It plans to continue advocating for an app ecosystem that offers more choices, according to a statement the company shared with The Verge. “Apple and Google continue to abuse their market power with policies that stifle innovation, inflate prices and reduce consumer choice,” Corie Wright, Epic’s VP of public policy, said in the statement. “One deal does not change the anticompetitive status quo. We will continue to fight for fair and open platforms for all developers and consumers and work with policymakers and regulators to hold these gatekeepers accountable for their anticompetitive conduct.”

Gran Turismo 7 will rejigger its game economy after backlash

Don't let <em>GT7</em>'s grind rain on your parade, the economy is being fixed.

When Gran Turismo 7 launched earlier this month, it was no surprise that the game’s economy was not exactly forgiving. But displeasure among players boiled over a couple of weeks later after a bungled update took down the game servers—and therefore basically the entire game—for more than a day.

Now, the head of Polyphony Digital, Kazunori Yamauchi, has published a post at the PlayStation blog to apologize to players and let them know the studio has been listening:

I would like to apologize for the frustration and confusion caused last week with our patch updates which resulted in not only a server outage but also adjustments to the in-game economy which were made without a clear explanation to our community.

Every player who had a copy of the game by the time the post went live in the early hours of Friday morning will, at some point in the very near future, find an extra million in-game credits in their account as a goodwill gesture.

Mac Mini + iPad Mini = touchscreen Mac

The device has a touchscreen instead of an integrated keyboard and touchpad.

Measuring 7.7 x 7.7 x 1.4 inches and weighing 2.6 pounds, the Mac Mini is more portable than most desktops. But in order to use it at, for example, a café, you also need to carry some sort of display. Instead of relegating desktop-level work to, well, the top of the desk, one maker has taken matters into his own hands. The “Portable Mac Mini,” as he calls it, is supposed to make it easier to work with the Mac Mini anywhere. It also creates a pseudo-Mac laptop with a handy feature that Apple doesn’t offer in its real clamshells.

Although the Portable Mac Mini that YouTuber Scott Yu-Jan created has a display you can angle and folds shut like a laptop, it has to be plugged in, and it doesn’t have a built-in physical keyboard.

However, the computer does have a screen attached: a 2021 iPad Mini. The tablet brings touch functionality to the Mac Mini via Duet Display, an app that basically turns iPads or iPhones into second screens. Apple doesn’t make any MacBooks with touchscreens, so the result here is a maker-made exclusive.

Dungeons & Dragons & Novels: Revisiting Artifact of Evil

Having treated myself to several good Dungeons & Dragons novels in a row—mainly the original Dragonlance trilogy and R.A. Salvatore’s The Halfling’s Gem—in the last few D&D&N columns, I knew that I must pay a price in return. That price was reading Artifact of Evil, the second Greyhawk novel by D&D co-creator Gary…

Spotify will 'fully suspend' service in Russia

Spotify is shuttering more of its Russian operations in response to that country’s invasion of Ukraine. In a statement to Variety, the company said it would “fully suspend” service in Russia for an indefinite period. While the music streamer initially believed it was important to keep some service running to provide “trusted, independent” information, it was concerned that recent laws restricting free speech and accurate news reporting would put the safety of staff and listeners “at risk.”

The company already halted access to its paid Premium service earlier in March, and removed content from state-backed Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik. This latest move will cut off free service.

The further withdrawal likely won’t hurt Spotify’s finances to a significant degree, but it might limit the company’s influence in Russia. While the country only represents 1 percent of Spotify’s total revenue, Deloitte estimated the service was the second-largest streaming music service with 36 percent share in 2021. That’s no small feat when Spotify only reached Russia in July 2020, and Sensor Tower noted that there had already been nearly 15 million installs across Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

Rivals have already taken action to varying degrees. Apple halted all product sales in Russia in early March, while Deezer stopped service around the same time. Spotify was an outlier in that regard, and was facing mounting pressure to cut off all access and show its support for Ukraine.
