A Gas Made From Light Becomes Easier To Compress as You Squash It

Particles of light called photons can be trapped inside mirrors to form a gas with unusual properties, New Scientist reports. From the report: A gas made of particles of light, or photons, becomes easier to compress the more you squash it. This strange property could prove useful in making highly sensitive sensors. While gases are normally made from atoms or molecules, it is possible to create a gas of photons by trapping them with lasers. But a gas made this way doesn’t have a uniform density — researchers say it isn’t homogeneous, or pure — making it difficult to study properly. Now Julian Schmitt at the University of Bonn, Germany, and his colleagues have made a homogeneous photon gas for the first time by trapping photons between two nanoscale mirrors. They then moved one of the mirrors to measure the compressibility of the photon gas and derive basic properties about it. “We can consider the system to be like an air pump, but it’s not filled with air, it’s filled with light,” says Schmitt. “We compress it and look at how it responds. In this way, we can learn about very fundamental properties.” Journal reference: Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.abm2543.

Bungie slams YouTube’s DMCA system in lawsuit against Destiny takedown fraudsters

Bungie slammed YouTube’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) process in a lawsuit against 10 John Doe defendants accused of sending fraudulent takedown notices against Destiny 2 videos.

“Doe Defendants were able to do this because of a hole in YouTube’s DMCA-process security, which allows any person to claim to be representing any rights holder in the world for purposes of issuing a DMCA takedown,” Bungie wrote in a complaint filed Friday in US District Court for the Western District of Washington. Bungie continued:

In other words, as far as YouTube is concerned, any person, anywhere in the world, can issue takedown notices on behalf of any rights holder, anywhere. A disgruntled infringer or a competitive content producer, for example, can issue takedown notices purportedly on behalf of Disney, or Fox, or Universal—or even Google itself. All they need to do is: (1) fill out the video removal form… (2) have a Google account—including, upon information and belief, one created that same day and with fake information; and (3) fill out information and click verification buttons fraudulently certifying that they have the right to submit the takedown request, with no verification done by YouTube.

While YouTube and its owner Google were not named as defendants, they feature heavily throughout Bungie’s complaint. The 10 Doe defendants haven’t been identified yet because of “the Byzantine procedural labyrinth Google required before it would address the fraud its users were committing, let alone identify who its fraudsters were,” Bungie wrote.

Tiny Tina's Revolution Side-Quest Is Borderlands Writing At Its Best

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands revitalizes Borderlands, thanks to a fantasy-inspired respray and an increased focus on melee attacks. A quieter but perhaps no less significant change is how the loot-shooter handles side-quests. For me, this clicked in an early optional mission called “Goblins Tired of Forced Oppression.”

DC Universe Infinite is finally available outside of the US

After being converted from a streaming video service into a portal for comic books last year, DC Universe Infinite is finally rolling out to regions outside of the US this spring and summer.

Today, DC Comics announced that the service is now available in Canada, with support for Australia and New Zealand arriving later this week on March 29th. After that, the UK will get access on April 28th, followed by availability in Brazil and Mexico sometime later this summer.

DC Comics says subscribers in other countries will have the same access to the service’s library of more than 25,000 comics books as those in the US, including early access to new Digital First comics such as Suicide Squad: King Shark and others. And just like in the US, new editions of printed comics will be added to the service six months after first going on sale in retail stores.

Meanwhile, to sweeten the deal, DC Comics is introducing discounted pricing for anyone who signs up during the first 30 days of DC Universe Inifinite’s launch in their country, with customers able to keep that
reduced pricing for as long as they maintain a paid subscription. So while prices vary a bit by region, you’ll generally be looking at savings of around 30 to 35 percent if you take advantage of DC’s introductory pricing.

At launch, an annual subscription to DC Universe Infinite will cost just $59.99 CAD, $64.99 AUD, $64.99 NZD or £36.99 BPS for the next 30 days, before jumping up to its regular price of $89.99 CAD, $99.99 AUD & $99.99 NZD or £54.99 per year. Alternatively, if you prefer to pay month by month, you can do that too with prices starting at $9.99 CAD, $9.99 AUD, $9.99 NZD or £6.99 BPS.

Dirty Bomb Ingredients Go Missing From Chornobyl Monitoring Lab

Insecure radioactive materials are the latest worry as Russia continues occupation of infamous nuclear reservation. schwit1 shares a report: When the lights went out at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant on 9 March, the Russian soldiers holding Ukrainian workers at gunpoint became the least of Anatolii Nosovskyi’s worries. More urgent was the possibility of a radiation accident at the decommissioned plant. If the plant’s emergency generators ran out of fuel, the ventilators that keep explosive hydrogen gas from building up inside a spent nuclear fuel repository would quit working, says Nosovskyi, director of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISPNPP) in Kyiv. So would sensors and automated systems to suppress radioactive dust inside a concrete “sarcophagus” that holds the unsettled remains of Chornobyl’s Unit Four reactor, which melted down in the infamous 1986 accident.

Although power was restored to Chornobyl on 14 March, Nosovskyi’s worries have multiplied. In the chaos of the Russian advance, he told Science, looters raided a radiation monitoring lab in Chornobyl village — apparently making off with radioactive isotopes used to calibrate instruments and pieces of radioactive waste that could be mixed with conventional explosives to form a âoedirty bombâ that would spread contamination over a wide area. ISPNPP has a separate lab in Chornobyl with even more dangerous materials: “powerful sources of gamma and neutron radiation” used to test devices, Nosovskyi says, as well as intensely radioactive samples of material leftover from the Unit Four meltdown. Nosovskyi has lost contact with the lab, he says, so “the fate of these sources is unknown to us.”

Call of Duty: Warzone Can’t Get More Maps Because Install Size Is ‘F**king Crazy’

Free-to-play battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone only has one main map, unlike other, similar shooters like Apex Legends or PUBG. And while many players and even the devs behind the game would love to add more, the game’s infamously large install size is apparently stopping them from expanding further.

'Most Severe' Cyberattack Since Russian Invasion Crashes Ukraine Internet Provider

A “powerful” cyberattack has hit Ukraine’s biggest fixed line telecommunications company, Ukrtelecom. Described as the most severe cyberattack since the start of the Russian invasion in February, it has sent the company’s services across the country down. From a report: Victor Zhora, deputy head of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection, confirmed to Forbes that the government was investigating the attack. He said it’s not yet known whether Ukrtelecom — a telephone, internet and mobile provider — has been hit by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack or a deeper, more sophisticated intrusion. The attack has only been acknowledged by Ukrtelecom in responses to customer comments on Facebook. In one, it responded by saying that services were down as a result of a “powerful cyber attack of the enemy.” When Forbes messaged Ukrtelecom over Facebook, an automated response was provided, reading, “Currently, there are difficulties in using the internet service from Ukrtelecom. Our specialists are doing everything possible to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Due to the abnormal load and problems with internal systems, the operators of the contact center and Facebook can not process customer requests.” NetBlocks, which tracks internet downtimes across the world, found Ukrtelecom had been dealing with a disrupted service since this morning, “collapsing to 13% of pre-war levels.”

Instagram's latest test makes it easier to support social causes

Instagram is taking some of the hassle out of supporting a noble cause. The social network is testing a feature that gives you the choice of backing a movement when you search for its hashtag. You’ll see the option to either “spread the word” through direct messages or start a fundraiser to provide material aid.

The test is focused on a “handful” of hashtags linked to well-known social causes, including #BlackLivesMatter, #climatecrisis and #womensrights. Instagram said it consulted with a group of relevant organizations, such as GLAAD and the NAACP, before settling on this first list. The social media giant said it would collaborate with others to expand the range of eligible topics.

The experiment isn’t surprising. A feature like this could encourage more people to use hashtags and DMs. That, in turn, could keep you on Instagram where you might be tempted to leave for TikTok, where “Donation Stickers” have long been an option for creators hoping to rally support.

First there was the Russian oligarch jet tracker; then there was the Russian oligarch yacht tracker; now there’s the Russian oil tanker tracker.

The new tool comes from data scientists at Greenpeace UK, who created an automated bot that draws from public data to tweet about the movements of oil and gas tankers leaving Russian ports. The goal, Greenpeace says, is to cut off one of Russia’s main revenue sources that’s helping fuel President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Russia draws considerable revenue from oil and gas—about 40 percent of its federal budget relies on fossil fuel royalties—which means that tankers fulfilling contracts are essentially contributing to Russia’s war machine. By tweeting the origin, identity, and destination of tankers that have docked at Russian ports, Greenpeace is hoping to shame companies and countries into shunning oil and gas purchases from the country.
