Google Slapped With French Fine Over Abusive App Store Practices

Alphabet’s Google was fined 2 million euros ($2.2 million) by the Paris Commercial Court over abusive practices toward developers on its app store. From a report: The U.S. tech giant will also have to change seven clauses from its contracts dating back to years 2015 and 2016, that included a 30% commission on revenues generated by developers on the Google Play Store, according to a text of Monday’s ruling. Google, as well as Apple, were taken to court in 2018 by the French Ministry of Finance, for imposing a “significant imbalance in the rights and obligations” concerning app developers, including the right for Google to unilaterally modify or terminate the contracts.

DC Comics' Round Robin Tournament Returns to Make One Comic a Reality

Last year, DC Comics ran its first Round Robin tournament, which wasn’t about an eating contest between Batman’s various sidekicks (although I would definitely read a comic about that). Instead, it was a March Madness-style bracket where DC allowed fans to vote on which six-issue, digital-first series they wanted,…

Sony Launches New PlayStation Gaming Subscription Service

Sony is set to launch a new video game subscription service this summer, seeking to drive sales of its PlayStation consoles and compete with a similar offering from Microsoft. CNBC: The company said Tuesday it will bundle its existing PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services into one single subscription service called PlayStation Plus. The new PlayStation Plus will be available in June and comes in three tiers:

1. The basic package, PS Plus Essential, replaces the original PS Plus, which offers players two free games each month and access to online multiplayer. It costs $10 a month or $60 for an annual subscription.

2. A step above Essential is PS Plus Extra, which comes with all the same perks as Essential but includes a selection of 400 downloadable PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles. It’s priced at $15 monthly or $100 a year.

3. The most expensive package is PS Plus Premium. This one includes 340 more games than Extra, and lets players stream a selection of PS, PS2, PSP, PS3, PS4 and PS5 games over the internet. PS Plus Premium costs $18 a month or $120 each year.

Fortnite's zero-building mode is here to stay

Epic isn’t wasting time in elevating Fortnite‘s no-build mode. The developer has launched a “Zero Build” format in the Discover page that, as the name implies, takes the game’s signature construction out of the usual last-one-standing gameplay. You’ll have to rely on ‘just’ your weapon and tactical positioning skills to survive. If that sounds like other battle royale games, you’re not wrong — Epic has even tweaked the game to add familiar elements.

You now have a recharging shield to protect yourself instead of having to consume pickups. There are also some decidedly Apex Legends-like “Ascender” ziplines to help you reach blimp-based deployment points, and you can mantle over obstacles. Sprints are available if you need a brief burst of speed to avoid gunfire.

Zero Build is available to play in solo, duo, trio and squad playlists. The addition isn’t a shock, at least. This not only adds some variety to Fortnite, but might keep you from switching to rivals if you’re either frustrated with building or just want the occasional break.

'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' sequel delayed to spring 2023

If you were looking forward to playing the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild this year, we have some bad news. Nintendo just announced in a short video that the game will be delayed and the company is now targeting a spring 2023 release after previously saying the game would come out in 2022.

As is usually the case with such delays, Nintendo didn’t offer a ton of details. Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said that the company decided to “extend our development time a bit” and apologized to those looking forward to playing the new games.

The video also offered a quick look at gameplay for the upcoming release, with a big focus on how this adventure will take place in the skies above Hyrule as well as on the ground. It wasn’t too different from what we saw in the game’s first official trailer that was released at E3 2021, but it is at least a good refresher for what we have to look forward to. One detail that did catch our eye, though, is a scene where Link holds a pretty beat-up looking version of the iconic Master Sword. Your guess is as good as ours as for what that means for the game, though. In the meantime, don’t despair, Switch fans — there are still plenty of great games to look forward to in 2022.

Australia Cyber Defence Bolstered by $10 Billion via Project REDSPICE

Almost $10 billion over the next decade will be pumped into helping Australia compete in cyber warfare with adversaries such as Russia and China in a major funding boost that will nearly double the size of the nation’s leading cyber security agency. From a report: In its centrepiece defence budget announcement, the government will make the largest single investment in the 75-year history of the Australian Signals Directorate, the country’s powerful and highly secretive electronic intelligence agency. The government said the funding increase — dramatically named Project REDSPICE (Resilience, Effects, Defence, Space, Intelligence, Cyber, and Enablers) — will significantly expand the ASD’s offensive cyber capabilities, as well as the agency’s ability to prevent hacking and other digital attacks.

The government intends to put national security at the centre of the upcoming election campaign, contrasting its latest announcements with reductions to defence spending during the Rudd-Gillard era. In his budget night speech Treasurer Josh Frydenberg described the $9.9 billion in spending over 10 years as the country’s “biggest ever investment in Australia’s cyber preparedness.” It comes on top of the government’s previously announced expansion in Australian Defence Force personnel and the purchase of new Chinook helicopters, Abrams tanks and combat engineering vehicles.

My Toddler Loves to Use the Amazon Glow When It's Not Being Buggy

I am honestly amazed at how much my toddler has learned to use gadgets. She knows which buttons to push on the Portal Go to call a specific grandparent. She has no problem taking her designated smartphone off the charger and firing up an episode of Pokémon or something else on Disney+. I am even more impressed that…

Detecting Methane With NASA's Space Telescope May Help Us Discover Alien Life
The strongest indicator for the presence of life on another planet is perhaps not oxygen, but rather methane. In a new study by scientists at UC Santa Cruz, a compelling case can be made for methane in a planet’s atmosphere being cause for biological activity on a distant planet.
