Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger Says Alder Lake Put AMD In The Rearview Mirror For Good
It hasn’t even been a full year since Pat Gelsinger took over as CEO of Intel, but in a relatively short span he has made some big comments. His boldest to date, however, came in a video posted to his LInkedIn page, in which the CEO reflected on the past year while wearing a delightfully geeky Christmas sweater. The way Gelsinger tells it,

Peugeot thinks its wingless 9X8 race car can win Le Mans

With the introduction of the new Hypercar class, Peugeot will try to do something unheard of in more than 50 years—win the 24 Hours of Le Mans without a rear wing. The French automaker raised a few eyebrows when the first pictures of its wingless race car became public last summer, since big rear wings have been part and parcel of racing for decades. But the 9X8 took to the track last month for its first test, and as you can see, it’s still sans aile.

The 9X8 is designed to compete under the new Hypercar rules, which are complicated and unfriendly to the casual fan. Not all Hypercars have to be hybrids, but the 9X8 is. Behind the cockpit and ahead of the rear wheels that it powers is a new 2.6 L Biturbo gasoline V6, good for 500 kW (670hp). Ahead of the driver’s feet, you’ll find a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor-generator unit. To keep speeds safe, the total output is capped at 500 kW by the 9X8’s electronic brain.

Although the 9X8’s powertrain is all new, it’s not actually Peugeot’s first hybrid endurance racer. That honor goes to the 908 Hybrid4, which was meant to contest Le Mans in 2012. Instead, Peugeot shuttered its racing program early after an economic downturn and layoffs made such side activities untenable.

Phix solves all Rosetta Code tasks

The Phix programming language is the first to achieve 100% coverage of the Rosetta Code challenges.

Rosetta Code hosts tasks, currently 1492, to be solved by a variety of programming languages. The tasks range from ‘Hello World’ to devilishly difficult. Phix, developed by Pete Lomax, is a self-hosting interpreter/compiler for Windows/Linux x86 computers; that also comes with a transpiler to Java-Script.

Phix features the principle of least surprise, relaxed syntax, three data-types, generic, works the same all the time, and faster than most.

The Cuphead Show's First Trailer Runneth Over

Making an animated TV show about characters from a video game that was inspired wholly from classic animation seems feels like a bit of an ouroboros, or a snake eating its own tail. But is that really a problem when Netflix’s upcoming The Cuphead Show looks so good and fun? I think not.

Those Apps You ‘Deleted’ on Your Mac Might Still Be Hanging Around

Windows has a dedicated section for uninstalling apps, but Mac doesn’t. It’s supposed to be simpler on the Mac—you delete an app just like a file by dragging it to the Trash, then emptying the Trash. That works fine for many apps, but some are more difficult to uninstall because they leave their mark across multiple…

ArXiv Reaches a Milestone and a Reckoning

Runaway success and underfunding have led to growing pains for the preprint server. From a report: What started in 1989 as an e-mail list for a few dozen string theorists has now grown to a collection of more than two million papers — and the central hub for physicists, astronomers, computer scientists, mathematicians and other researchers. On January 3 the preprint server arXiv.org crossed the milestone with a numerical analysis paper entitled “Affine Iterations and Wrapping Effect: Various Approaches.” (The Library of Alexandria, for comparison, is believed to have contained no more than hundreds of thousands of manuscripts.) “We’re a way for authors to communicate their research results quickly and freely,” says Steinn Sigurdsson, a professor of astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University and arXiv’s scientific director. Unlike traditional scientific journals, arXiv (pronounced “archive” because the “X” represents the Greek letter chi) allows scientists to share research before it has been peer-reviewed.

When submitting to traditional journals, authors frequently wait half a year or more to publish; papers typically appear on arXiv within a day. Authors often submit manuscripts to arXiv and then subsequently publish them in a peer-reviewed journal, but increasingly, papers are released on arXiv alone. Beyond traditional manuscripts, arXiv also contains white papers, historical overviews and even cheeky April Fools’ Day papers. “It’s like the backbone for our field,” says Alex Kohls, head of the Scientific Information Service at CERN, the world’s premier organization for particle physics research, located near Geneva.

“It’s not only a tool for physicists and computer scientists — it has had an impact on the overall scholarly communication process.” For instance, arXiv-inspired preprint servers in the life sciences, such as bioRxiv and medRxiv, have proved invaluable for speeding up biomedical research during the coronavirus pandemic. Growth has been explosive. In 2008, 17 years after it went online, arXiv hit 500,000 papers. By late 2014 that total had doubled to one million. Seven years later arXiv has doubled its library again but continues to grapple with its role: Is it closer to a selective academic journal or more like an online warehouse that indiscriminately collects papers?
Amid this confusion, some researchers are concerned about arXiv’s moderation policies, which they say lack transparency and have led to papers being unfairly rejected or misclassified. At the same time, arXiv is struggling to improve the diversity of its moderators, who are predominantly men based at U.S. institutions.

How to Get Your Free At-Home COVID Tests From the U.S. Government

When the plan to provide free at-home COVID tests was announced in December, it looked pretty underwhelming—tests would be reimbursable by insurance, and free tests would be available at some community centers. Fortunately, the plan is now being rolled out, with an important addition: You can request free tests from a…

Exxon’s Plan to Hit Net Zero Carbon Emissions: LOL

Exxon announced on Tuesday it would set a goal to be net zero by 2050, thus proving oil companies are just like you and me: prone to peer pressure and willing to fudge a few numbers to look good. Unfortunately, Exxon’s fudged numbers hold a lot more sway over the fate of the planet than my bench press personal record.

'Cuphead' animated series comes to Netflix February 18th

You won’t have to wait as long for Netflix’s Cuphead show as you did for the video game. Netflix has revealedThe Cuphead Show premieres February 18th, and has offered a trailer to show just what you can expect. At first glance, fans of the difficult-but-loveable side-scroller don’t have much to worry about — Studio MDHR’s signature 1930s art style and characters have successfully made the leap, even if this is still a modern cartoon in many respects.

The trailer shows Cuphead and his easily-persuaded brother Mugman getting into plenty of trouble by visiting the “Carnevil,” among other hijinks. They’ll have to contend with the Devil and King Dice as well as friends that include Ms. Chalice (from the game’s upcoming Delicious Last Course DLC), Elder Kettle and the pig shopkeeper. You can also see several of the game’s lesser bosses make cameo appearances in the clip.

The series stars voice acting veterans Tru Valentino and Frank Todaro as Cuphead and Mugman respectively, with Wayne Brady as King Dice. It’s too early to say if The Cuphead Show will be as popular as some of Netflix’s other video game endeavors, but the influence of Studio MDHR creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer (who helped executive-produce the show) is clear. This appears to be a sincere nod to what made the game special, not just an attempt to milk its success and widen its audience.
