From my past experience when I was new to Linux, its commands and terminals really scared me. I was worried about the commands, especially as to what extent I have to remember and memorize commands to get myself fully functional with Linux.
No doubt online documentation, Linux books, man pages, and user community helped me a lot, But I strongly believed that there should be an article with basic Linux commands in easy-to-learn and understand language. These motivated me to master Linux and to help others understand how it works. This article is a step towards mastering Linux for yourself.
Many newer smartphones support eSIMs as well as the physical SIM cards we’ve all been slotting into our devices for years. If you’re wondering what exactly an eSIM is, and whether or not you should be using one, this guide is for you.

Tesla is rolling out a major update for its iOS smartphone app with new controls, improved management and cool visuals. Version 4.0 also gives you the choice between two different sized widgets for your iPhone home screen. As detailed by Tesla Software Updates, both feature the same information: the name of the car, battery percentage, location (or charging info), unlock status, an image of the vehicle and the time the information was last updated. Tesla previously had a “Today” extension for iOS that was nowhere near as comprehensive as the new widgets.
In terms of controls, you can send commands to your car immediately upon opening the app, instead of waiting for the vehicle to wake up. There’s also enhanced phone key support that essentially lets you unlock multiple Teslas.
An updated visual that should be immediately noticeable is the new 3D vehicle render. There are also new animations when you charge your car and in the climate and controls sections. Design-wise, Tesla has ditched the charging section and now displays that info when your car is plugged in. You can also view Supercharging history from within the app. While the speed limit, valet mode and sentry mode settings have been moved to a new category titled Security, which includes tips on how to use the Bluetooth, phone key and location services.
To sum up, this is the biggest update to the EV maker’s iOS app in a while. Recently, Tesla has mainly focused on providing bug fixes and improvements, outside of the introduction of Virtual Power Plant enrolment in July.

OnlyFans is back. Or at least, business will continue as usual for now. Best known for its adult videos and images from independent creators, the site decided to bring the ban hammer down on adult content last week, citing that big banking was to blame for the sudden shift in policy. Apparently, as of yesterday, OnlyFans has found a way forward. It says it’s “suspended” the ban on pornography for now, but has otherwise left creators and the rest of us in the dark as to the details. In an email to creators, OnlyFans said it’s got “banking partners’ assurances” that it can support the whole gamut of content hosted on the site.
The next challenge for the company are the issues highlighted in a recent BBC investigation of its activities. The report outlined how illegal content from some creators was able to make it onto the site, and how banning policy seemed to contort to fit its most popular creators.
Samsung features a new OS, body composition measurement and sleep-tracking features as well as upgraded sensors and processor in its Galaxy Watch 4. According to Reviews Editor Cherlynn Low, while those are helpful, it’s the core smartwatch experience (what used to be known as Tizen) that shines. Unfortunately, battery life suffers as a result of all those new features.

If you’re a Discord user, there’s a good chance you’ve benefited from Groovy Bot, which lets people jam together with music from YouTube, Spotify and others. But it turns out Google didn’t appreciate its ability to rip music out of YouTube. The company has sent a cease and desist letter to Groovy Bot’s owners, and against the might of Google, they’re not putting up a fight: Groovy Bot will go offline on August 30th.
A YouTube spokesperson noted that Groovy Bot violated its terms of service, particularly because it modified the way YouTube worked and charged for the privilege. If Groovy Bot were merely free, it may have been able to live on — the premium subscription might be what killed it.
You’ll be able to split up the elements of each song.
Kanye West
West and electronics design firm Kano have introduced a Donda Stem Player that, as the name implies, lets you remix music from Kanye’s upcoming album Donda (plus your own tunes) using song stems. The gadget can apparently isolate song parts and control aspects like bass, drums, samples and vocals, though it’s unlikely to be able to perfectly lift out separate elements. You can order the Stem Player now for $200.
After a year-long delay, Halo Infinite will arrive on December 8th. Developer 343 Industries confirmed the timing during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event yesterday. However, this date was leaked just hours before the show started. To celebrate, however, we did get a new multiplayer gameplay trailer.
Sony, Bose, Apple and even Razer have headphones worth considering.
In the last two years, true wireless earbuds have made quite the leap. There’s no doubt the popularity of Apple’s AirPods helped make these headphones a mainstay, but companies’ ability to offer reliable connectivity, great sound and active noise cancellation (ANC) in an increasingly smaller form factor has hastened widespread adoption. Here’s our updated guide to the best options out there.
Japan’s health ministry has decided to halt all covid-19 vaccinations that depend on the Moderna brand after “foreign substances” were found in 39 vials, according to the Japan Times. The foreign substances have yet to be identified but are reportedly “a few millimeters” in size.
Peter Thiel’s AI company Palantir, whose clients have included the CIA and US immigration agency ICE, is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A new report claims a glitch in its secretive software program used by the FBI allowed unauthorized personnel to access private data for more than a year. According to The New York Post, the mishap was revealed in a letter by prosecutors in the Manhattan federal court case against accused hacker Virgil Griffith. Palantir denied the claims in a statement and said the fault was caused by the FBI’s incorrect use of the software.
Griffith was arrested in 2019 for allegedly providing North Korea with information on how cryptocurrency and blockchain tech could help it to evade US sanctions. The incident in question revolves around the alleged hacker’s social media data, obtained through a federal search warrant in March 2020. According to the letter, the Twitter and Facebook information was uploaded to Palantir’s program through the default settings, effectively allowing unauthorized FBI employees to access it.
Between May 2020 to August 2021, the material was accessed four times by three analysts and an agent. The FBI case agent assigned to Griffith’s case was alerted to the issue by a colleague earlier this month, according to the letter. Those who accessed the info reportedly told prosecutors that they did not recall using it in their investigations.
“An FBI analyst, in the course of conducting a separate investigation, had identified communications between the defendant and the subject of that other investigation by means of searches on the Platform that accessed the Search Warrant Returns,” the letter noted.
Palantir is trying to distance itself from the issue. “There was no glitch in the software,” it told The New York Post in a statement, adding that the “customer” did not follow the “rigorous protocols established to protect search warrant returns.”
Amid increasing growth, the last thing Palantir needs is a major PR crisis involving flaws in its software. Since going public last fall, the company has seen its revenues surge, though it’s operational losses are also increasing. Palantir’s customers now span government agencies, tech stalwarts like IBM and even mining group Rio Tinto. Plus, it’s working with commercial space companies to manage a meta-constellation of 237 satellites.
Enlarge/ Newer versions of Western Digital’s WD Blue SN550 may perform worse than older ones. (credit: Western Digital)
Western Digital’s WD Blue SN550 budget SSD is a well-reviewed, popular NVMe device that has regularly shown up on various sites’ “best SSD” lists since it was released at the tail-end of 2019. The drive uses a four-lane PCI Express 3.0 interface and was novel for being able to perform better than SATA SSDs for about the same amount of money.
But that may be changing, thanks to quiet behind-the-scenes component changes: Chinese site Expreview (via Tom’s Hardware and ExtremeTech) says that a newer version of the drive manufactured in July 2021 was writing data at speeds of about 390MB per second after the drive’s cache had filled up. According to Expreview, that’s about half the speed of older versions of the SN550; Tom’s Hardware measured speeds of about 610MB per second during a sustained write test on the original SN550, so the exact amount of performance degradation may vary. Because both the old and new versions of the SN550 use the same SSD controller, it seems likely that the slowdown is being caused by inferior NAND flash.
Modern SSDs typically pair a large amount of slower NAND flash (for capacity) and a smaller cache of faster flash memory (for the peak speeds advertised on the box). Depending on the SSD, this cache memory is designed to sustain anywhere between a few gigabytes’ and a few dozen gigabytes’ worth of writes before it has to fall back on the slower flash. Most of the time, you’ll never notice the drive slowing down, because you’re not going to fill the cache up all the way by using your computer for basic browsing, office work, or even photo editing.

One thing with fashion is that trends keep on evolving. Today, everyone is wearing that trendy outfit, then tomorrow it is at the back of their wardrobe, or they want to dispose of it. Fortunately, not all fashion trends share that fate. Some are here to stay. For instance, no one will be surprised if a rapper gets on to the dance stage with an expensive chain since hip-hop culture never changes.
In the same way, some fashion trends never seem to lose their appeal even after years. They are like timeless classics. Let us look at some of them.
A tee and a pair of jeans
A tee and a pair of jeans come in handy almost any time. Whenever you are short of ideas but you still want to be stylish, just throw in a graphic tee from Miss Match and a pair of jeans, and you are good to go. It is a fashion style that is pretty much in everyone’s wardrobe.
Fitting jeans highlight the curves while enabling you to move quickly and comfortably. Also, you can wear denim in any weather; therefore, it is versatile. T-shirts are just as comfortable. They come in complementing color combinations, various graphic designs, are cheap and easily accessible. They are always on sale at affordable prices.
A denim jacket
Many jacket styles have come and gone, but denim jackets always carry the day. Denim jackets are an iconic and classic trend since many years ago. Plus, they come in different sizes and lengths to fit into various types of outfits or to bring out any style you want. Wearing a denim jacket is the perfect way to complete a casual look effortlessly. If you like loose-fitting clothes, you can go with a bigger sized one to fit in with a pair of pants. Tight denim jackets are also an option, especially with feminine outfits.
A little black dress
Any fashionable lady must own a little black dress. It comes in handy for that romantic dinner, a night out, or when traveling. You can also wear it as an official casual dress for official purposes. Other than being classic and elegant, black makes you appear slimmer and taller. It conceals all your bumps and budges, making you look sleek and stylish.
High waisted jeans
High-waisted jeans have been around for quite a while now. Since they cover the better part of the abdomen, they make the wearer look flatter on the waste while highlighting the curves on the thighs and butt. Besides that, high wasted jeans can be styled to develop formal styles such as tucking in and throwing in a blazer.
A fashionable watch
Watches are timeless. Wearing a classic watch is the best way to accessorize any look. Watches also serve as a status symbol. Rather than going out of style, watches keep evolving to smart ones and even more functional ones. These days, we have smartwatches that can perform the same functions as your phone while others help you keep your health in check, like monitoring your heart rate.
Summing up
These trends have managed to stick around because of how versatile and universal they are.

Passengers escaped an Alaska Airlines jet via emergency slides on Monday night after a malfunctioning smartphone filled the cabin with smoke. The Register reports: The pilot ordered the evacuation of flight 751 from New Orleans to Seattle after someone’s cellphone started to spit out sparks and smoke just after landing. As the aircraft was still waiting on the tarmac at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for a gate, the slides were deployed and all 129 passengers and six crew made it out. The errant mobile was also stuffed in a bag to curb its compact conflagration. Two people, we’re told, were taken to hospital.
“The crew acted swiftly using fire extinguishers and a battery containment bag to stop the phone from smoking,” a spokesperson for Alaska Airlines told The Register. “Crew members deployed the evacuation slides due to hazy conditions inside the cabin. Two guests were treated at a local area hospital.” Airport officials, meanwhile, said “only minor scrapes and bruises were reported.” It’s unknown which device malfunctioned on this flight, but it makes us think back to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco of 2016 that prompted Samsung to formally recall the smartphone after nearly 100 reports of them catching fire and spewing noxious black smoke. The Note 7 was also banned from aircraft in the United States under an emergency order.

Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon Go, has announced that it will reinstate the wider access distance for players interacting with Pokéstops and Gyms. In a tweet, the company said that the radius would return to 80 meters from “now on,” after saying that the distance would be reduced back to its pre-pandemic size.
Trainers – we’re looking forward to sharing our plans as a result of the task force on September 1, but one thing does not have to wait! From now on, 80 meters will be the base interaction radius for PokéStops and Gyms globally. (1/2)
Go is, after all, a game designed to get folks out and about, which isn’t a great idea when there’s a global respiratory pandemic knocking around. That’s why, as COVID-19 began to bite, Niantic made interaction distances much longer, to discourage groups from crowding in public areas.
In addition, the company also made Remote Raid battles, and Adventure Sync work much more effectively from home, given the number of people who had to isolate. The normal calendar of real-world events were moved online, too, and many of the store deals were slashed in cost.
As Polygon reports, Niantic’s flip-flop here was prompted by social media protests after some of these changes were reversed. The company engaged in dialog with players, with a change in policy planned for September 1st, with players asking for better regard for safety and accessibility.
