84% of Mexican hand sanitizers toxic or flawed; FDA issues drastic alert

The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday issued a first-of-its-kind alert to try to block the import of toxic hand sanitizers from Mexico, which have been flooding the market amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last June, the regulatory agency began issuing alerts and warnings for consumers about dangerous and counterfeit hand sanitizers, many of which were made in Mexico. Since then, the FDA has issued alerts on 226 products. An FDA survey conducted between April and December found that 84 percent of products tested from Mexico were not in compliance with FDA regulations.

Many of the concerning products are labeled as containing safe alcohols but actually contained methanol, an extremely poisonous form of alcohol associated with incorrectly distilled liquors that can cause blindness and even death. The FDA discovered some other products containing another toxic ingredient, 1-propanol, while others simply contained insufficient amounts of safe alcohols for sanitation. (Safe alcohols for hand sanitizers include ethanol, aka ethyl alcohol, at concentrations above 60 percent or isopropyl alcohol at concentrations above 70 percent).

GameStop Stock Drama Continues As Price Soars And Hedge Fund Blinks

GameStop’s stock price continued to soar in after-hours trading last night to over $300. While many are waiting for it to come crashing back down, it might be too late for some major hedge funds. With the stock still sitting at well over $250 a share (unthinkable just last year when it was trading at under $5) after…

Vehicle recalls cluster because OEMs wait for rivals to move first

Vehicle recalls cluster because OEMs wait for rivals to move first

Many of us are familiar with the concept of the Friday night news dump, the term given to those occasions when, for example, an embattled politician announces a policy they know will be unpopular. Invariably, it happens late on a Friday afternoon, maximizing the chances that the news gets lost in the churn and forgotten by Monday. As it turns out, there’s a similar phenomenon in the auto industry: recall clustering.

For example, in August 2017, Ford issued a recall for leaky fuel tank valves, which was quickly followed by a fuel tank recall from Honda and an oil hose recall issued by Chrysler.

It’s not a new thing, either, according to new research published in Manufacturing and Service Operations Management. The researchers looked at 48 years of data, from 1966 to 2013, during which time they identified 3,117 vehicle recalls.

Garmin's Tiny Lily Smartwatch Doesn't Need All This Pandering Women-Centric Branding to Be Good

Often, when I show off a new smartwatch I’m testing to my gal pals, they inevitably crinkle their noses. “It’s…so big. And ugly,” they say. “I’d never wear something like that.” It’s something I’ve harped about in many a smartwatch review, a plea from the small-wristed among us for a wearable that doesn’t leave us…

Linux Struck By Exploitable Root Access Sudo Vulnerability, Patch ASAP
Linux is generally considered the Fort Knox of operating system (OS) standards, but it is not completely immune to security exploits. And it’s not just kids breaking and bypassing screensave locks, either. Case in point, the folks at Qualys discovered a heap overflow vulnerability in Sudo, the common utility in major Unix-like OSes, that could

Raspberry fish & RP2040 chip

Look at our lovely friends over at This is not Rocket Science (TiNRS) – they’ve wasted no time at all in jumping in with our new chips. In this guest post, Stijn of TiNRS shares their fishily musical application of our new toy.

The new RP2040 chip by Raspberry Pi is amazing. When we got our hands on this beautiful little thing, we did what we always do with new chips and slapped on a Goldfish, our favourite acid bassline synthesiser (we make fish and chips, hahahaha).

While benchmarking the performance by copy/pasting instances of our entire Goldfish in search of the chip’s limits, we suddenly found ourselves with a polyphonic synth. We have since rewritten these multiple instances into a 16-voice Poly-Goldfish with 4 oscillators per voice. To celebrate we designed a PCB and brightly coloured frontpanel to give this new Goldfish some dedicated controls.

Bring-up was trivial due to the amazing documentation and the extremely flexible PIO-blocks. RP2040 is a dream to work with. Childlike giddiness ensued while lying on the carpet and programming in VSCode on a Raspberry Pi 400 talking directly to the RP2040. This is the way to release a chip into the world: with fantastic documentation, an open toolchain and plenty of examples of how to use everything.

PCB and brightly coloured front panel

Once these chips hit general availability we will probably share some designs on our Github. This chip is now part of our go-to set of tools to make cool stuff and will very bloody likely be inside our next three modules.

It fits perfectly in our Open Source attitude. Because of the easy, high quality, multi-platform, free and even beginner-friendly toolchain they have built around this chip, we can expand the accessibility to the insides of our designs. With these chips it is way easier for us to have you do things like adding your own algorithms, building extra modes or creating personal effects. We can lean on the quality of the Raspberry Pi platform and this amazing chip.

TiNRS approves.

Google Spells Out Consequences of Apple's Privacy Push and IDFA Changes

Apple has prioritized user privacy over targeted advertising, and Google is spelling out today what that means for itself as well as game and app developers. From a report: Apple is advocating its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policy, which will require developers to ask for permission when they use personal data from other companies’ apps and websites for advertising purposes, even if they already have user consent. It will ask users to opt-in if they will allow advertisers to use their data via the Identifier for Advertisers, or IDFA. Many tests show that many users won’t allow it, and that means they won’t be so easily tracked for advertising purposes. This change could have a huge impact on the mobile advertising ecosystem, as it could make it harder to target users efficiently with advertising.

Eric Seufert, a user acquisition expert, said on Monday that he believes that Facebook could suffer a 7% revenue hit — a loss of tens of billions of dollars over time — as a result of the IDFA changes, and it’s no secret that Facebook isn’t happy about the impact on itself as well as small businesses. At our Driving Game Growth event on Tuesday, Facebook leaders pointed to the IDFA changes as creating uncertainty for mobile games in 2021. Google, which could also be impacted by the policy change, has stayed out of the fray — until today. “Today we’re sharing how Google is helping our community prepare, as we know that developers and advertisers in the iOS ecosystem are still figuring out how to adapt,” said Christophe Combette, group product manager for Google Ads in a blog post.

The 1950 Radio Series Dimension X Has The Science Fiction You've Been Looking For

Linux 5.10 LTS Will Only Be Maintained Until EOY 2022 Unless More Companies Step Up

Announced a few years ago was the notion of “extended” LTS kernel versions whereby the long term support cycle would span six years rather than the usual two years for LTS kernels in providing maintenance and bug/security fixes to the codebase. This means Linux 5.4 LTS is supported until the end of 2025, Linux 4.19 until the end of 2024, and even Linux 4.14 until the start of 2024. But with the recently minted Linux 5.10 LTS at least for now it’s only being committed to maintenance until the end of next year…
