What It's Like to Track Your Recovery With the Oura Ring

In our last installment, I started experimenting with sleep tracking in hopes of recovering better for my weightlifting sessions. I’ve used the Oura ring and Whoop band, but today I’ll talk mainly about Oura—my favorite of the two—and about what metrics I found useful.

COVID variants throw J&J vaccine a curveball, lowering efficacy to 66%

Johnson & Johnson’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine was 72 percent effective at preventing moderate and severe disease in the United States and 85 percent effective at preventing severe disease globally. But the one-shot vaccine struggled to fight off emerging virus variants in other countries, lowering its overall efficacy to 66 percent.
The topline results from Johnson & Johnson’s Phase III ENSEMBLE trial, announced Friday, suggest the vaccine will be yet another much-needed weapon against the pandemic virus, which has now infected over 100 million worldwide and killed nearly 2.2 million.
“Changing the trajectory of the pandemic will require mass vaccination to create herd immunity, and a single-dose regimen with fast onset of protection and ease of delivery and storage provides a potential solution to reaching as many people as possible,” said Mathai Mammen, global head of research and development at Janssen Pharmaceutical (owned by J&J). “The ability to avoid hospitalizations and deaths would change the game in combating the pandemic.”

[$] Tackling the monopoly problem
There was a time when people who were exploring computational technology
saw it as the path toward decentralization and freedom worldwide. What we
have ended up with, instead, is a world that is increasingly centralized,
subject to surveillance, and unfree. How did that come to be? In a keynote at the
online 2021 linux.conf.au event, Cory Doctorow gave his view of this problem and
named its source: monopoly.

YouTube’s new “Clips” feature lets users share 60-second clips of videos

YouTube is testing a feature popular from livestream platforms like Twitch: the ability for viewers and creators to make clips of longer videos, allowing for the sharing of short, bit-sized clips of a video. The feature is currently “in testing” with a small group of channels while YouTube gathers feedback.
Clips have a max of 60 seconds, and can be created by pressing a new “Share Clip” button. From there, users will get a draggable timeline editor to make a clip, name it, and share it via a new URL. This video has clips enabled if you want to try it yourself. For now, the feature only works on a desktop browser, but Android and iOS support is coming “soon.”
Unlike Twitch, which creates a new video from a clip, a YouTube clip link will load the original video with a start and end point on the seek bar, and the ~60 clip will loop between these two points. It seems somewhat similar to the ability to link to a timestamp in a video, just 60 seconds long and on a loop. A big, blue “Watch Full Video” button to the right of the video will start the full video, and since you’re already on the page with the video already loaded, your browser doesn’t actually go anywhere.

Profile of Keith Gill, Who Drove the GameStop Reddit Mania
The investor who helped direct the world’s attention to GameStop, leading a horde of online followers in a bizarre market rally that made and lost fortunes from one day to the next, says he’s just a normal guy. From his profile by The Wall Street Journal: “I didn’t expect this,” said Keith Gill, 34 years old, known as “DeepF-ingValue” by fans on Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum and “Dada” by his 2-year-old daughter. He said he didn’t set out to draw the attention of Congress, the Federal Reserve, hedge funds, the media, trading platforms and hundreds of thousands of investors. “This story is so much bigger than me,” Mr. Gill told The Wall Street Journal in his first interview since the unboxing this week of a volatile new stock market game. “I support these retail investors, their ability to make a statement.” To many of them, Mr. Gill — who until recently worked in marketing for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance — is the force behind the triple-digit gains in shares of the videogame retailer GameStop, up more than 900% this year through Thursday. On Wednesday, the stock jumped 135% to $347.51, a record, before plunging to $194 a share Thursday as online brokerages clamped down. At the start of the year, GameStop shares went for around $18. Many online investors say his advocacy helped turn them into a force powerful enough to cause big losses for established hedge funds and, for the moment, turn the investing world upside down.
Mr. Gill posted a screenshot of his brokerage account Wednesday, showing a roughly $20 million daily gain on GameStop shares and options. “Your steady hand convinced many of us to not only buy, but hold. Your example has literally changed the lives of thousands of ordinary normal people. Seriously thank you. You deserve every penny,” replied one Reddit user, reality_czech. The next day, Mr. Gill posted another screenshot — showing about a $15 million loss. After Thursday’s market close, his E*Trade brokerage account, viewed by the Journal, held around $33 million, including GameStop stock, options and millions in cash. “He always liked money,” said Elaine Gill, his mother. As a child, she said, “he would get money from those scratch tickets that people didn’t know they’d won. People would throw them on the ground… A lot of times there was still money on them.” Mr. Gill’s online persona — he goes by “Roaring Kitty” on YouTube — has drawn tens of thousands of fans and copycats who share screenshots of their own brokerage accounts. Mr. Gill said he wasn’t a rabble-rouser out to take on the establishment, just someone who believes investors can find value in unloved stocks. He never expected to have a legion of fans debating his identity online, or millions of dollars in his trading account, he said. He was just a dad with an online hobby and a plastic kiddie slide on the front lawn of a Boston suburb.

Critical security problem in Libgcrypt 1.9.0
The GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG or GPG) project has announced a critical security bug in Libgcrypt version 1.9.0 released January 19. “Libgcrypt is a general purpose library of cryptographic building blocks.
It is originally based on code used by GnuPG. It does not provide any
implementation of OpenPGP or other protocols. Thorough understanding of
applied cryptography is required to use Libgcrypt.” Version 1.9.1 has been released to address the problem and all users of 1.9.0 should update immediately. It is a heap buffer overflow, but no version of GnuPG uses the 1.9 series yet. “Exploiting this bug is simple and thus immediate action for 1.9.0 users
is required. A CVE-id has not yet been assigned. We track this bug at
https://dev.gnupg.org/T5275. The 1.9.0 tarballs on our FTP server have
been renamed so that scripts won’t be able to get this version anymore.“

Reddit Joins With Ethereum Foundation To Build Scaling Tools
Reddit is growing its role in the Ethereum ecosystem, with the goal of building out scaling tools for the blockchain network. From a report: The social media platform announced this week that it was expanding its work with the Ethereum Foundation to provide development resources to scaling tools. In the announcement, posted to the Ethereum subreddit, Reddit employee u/jarins said the move increases its commitment to the technology, and echoes its long-held “decentralized ethos.” “In this new stage of our partnership, immediate efforts will be focused on bringing Ethereum to Reddit-scale production,” the announcement said. “Our intention is to help accelerate the progress being made on scaling and develop the technology needed to launch large-scale applications like Community Points on Ethereum.”
This partnership could result in Reddit working on layer 2 scaling tools or pushing projects from a prototype stage to production. Reddit development resources, including a developer team, would be involved in this work. Ultimately, the idea is a project like Reddit’s Community Points feature could be capable of supporting the site’s millions of users (Reddit has over 50 million daily users as of press time, according to Wednesday’s announcement). “Our blockchain efforts will be led by Reddit’s Crypto team,” the announcement said, adding the company currently has job openings for backend engineers.

25 years later, Midway’s lost “MLB Jam” arcade game has been found
Enlarge / Play ball… finally. (credit: Video Game History Foundation)
By the end of the 1990s, you couldn’t throw a quarter in most malls without hitting an NBA Jam or NFL Blitz cabinet. “Arcade sports” became a full-blown sensation, and hockey, soccer, and tennis received their own high-speed arcade conversions. But that list of American sports sure seems to be missing its slice of arcade apple pie, doesn’t it?
You may have wondered for years why baseball never got an “MLB Jam” equivalent during that golden arcade era. Turns out, the sport got close. Thanks to the Video Game History Foundation, a new ROM has been unearthed for 1996’s lost Midway arcade game, Power-Up Baseball, and some of its former devs have explained what exactly happened with its development and cancellation.
A rare pair of trackballs

The story begins with VGHF, which we’ve talked about at Ars, continuing its dive into a massive pile of unearthed code fragments stored by the family of late games developer Chris Oberth. Today’s VGHF blog post points to how this collection mostly focuses on Oberth’s personal code contributions to various game projects, as opposed to compiling entire teams’ collective code. One project proved an exception to that rule: a single CD-ROM with the word “baseball” handwritten in marker.
