Company Pitches 'Flying Trains With Removable Wings' Idea To Boeing

Maurice Ricci, a French entrepreneur and founder of engineering and technology consulting firm Akka Technologies has just pitches his ‘Link & Fly’ (not to be confused with Link & Park) concept for train/plane cabin-like tubes that can be loaded with passengers at a neighborhood station, then railed to the airport, where modular wings will be attached, and the plane take to the skies. I don’t know about you, but personally I’m not thrilled about the idea of flying in a plane with wings made to come off.

With Akka’s futuristic concept, passengers would board a train-like tube at a neighborhood station and have their retinas scanned for security during the ride to the airport. Wings would then be attached to the pod for take-off.

Ricci estimates at least thirty minutes could be saved during each airport turnaround, and increase short flight rotations like that from Paris to Toulouse (approximately an hour and 15 minute flight) from 7 to 9 per day. Will it ever actually happen? Maybe. Will it happen in our lifetime? *eying the sky for nukes* Possibly. Will I ever ride one unless there’s free Wi-Fi and every single seat is an ejector seat? Absolutely not.

Keep going for a video of the concept.

Pass the Visine Please

Not that any of you ever actually go outside, but I thought this was an interesting science point to make, and keeps us on the water theme from the previous news nugget. It seems that getting into a hotel pool is the best way to get sick. But that was not really what caught my eye about this story. We have all gotten out of a pool at some point and had extremely bloodshot eyes. I think we all assume that there was always just a bit too much chlorine used by the poolboy. The Center for Disease Control lets us know that is not actually the problem. It seems that all the urine mixing with the chlorine is the issue. Don’t worry however, it is still probably much cleaner than your keyboard. Yeah, you should probably clean that…now.

When we go swimming and our eyes turn red, it’s because swimmers have peed in the water.

“The nitrogen in the urine combines with the chlorine and it forms what’s known as chloramine and it’s actually chloramine that causes the red eyes,” Michele Hlavsa, chief of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s healthy swimming program told TODAY in 2015 interview. “It’s chlorine mixed with poop and sweat and a lot of other things we bring into the water with us.”

There’s at least one way to check if the pool you’re about to swim in is clean or not. The stronger the chlorine smell at a pool, the more filled with pee it is. Healthy pools don’t smell like chemicals, Hlavsa said.

ARM's Own Employees Complain About Anti-RISCV Website

lkcl writes: Phoronix and The Register have an insightful look into an effort by ARM that is reminiscent of Microsoft’s “Get The Facts” campaign. RISC-V’s design is a revamp of the RISC concept that is intended from the ground up to fix the mistakes and learn from the lessons of the past 30 years. Power efficiency is 40% better than ARM or Intel. Compressed instructions reduce I-cache misses by 20-25%, which is roughly comparable to the same performance that would be achieved by doubling the Instruction Cache size. Yet despite El Reg’s insightful analysis, all is not as it seems: on further investigation, some of ARM’s criticism has merit, whilst some of it is clear out-and-out FUD from ARM that, being so critically dependent on free software, had its own employees complain so much that the site was pulled. Also we cannot help but wonder which “Big Chip” company offered seven-figure salaries to try to shut down the IIT Madras Shakti Project. Most interesting however is the fact that ARM — a $40 billion dollar company — is rattled by RISC-V enough to use underhanded tactics, whilst Intel on the other hand is actually investing.

Martin Tripp, the ex-Tesla technician who has been sued by his former employer, has now filed a formal whistleblower tip to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Tripp’s lawyer, Stuart Meissner, told Ars that his client is reiterating claims that the company has been allegedly dishonest with the public and with investors in statements regarding Model 3 production.

Previously, Tripp told Ars that he wanted to reveal internal waste and safety flaws in Tesla batteries that he claimed he observed while working at the company’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. The tip, known as a “TCR,” was filed late last Friday.

ARM Takes Down Boneheaded Website Attacking Open-Source Rival

ARM, the incredibly successful developer of CPU designs, appears to be getting a little nervous about an open-source rival that’s gaining traction. At the end of June, ARM launched a website outlining why it’s better than its competitor’s offerings and it quickly blew up in its face. Realizing the site was a bad look,…

Facebook improves AI by sending 'tourist bots' to a virtual NYC

As a general rule, AI isn’t great at using new info to make better sense of existing info. Facebook thinks it has a clever (if unusual) way to explore solutions to this problem: send AI on a virtual vacation. It recently conducted an experiment tha…

two-wrongs-dont-make-a-right.jpg

Because this is the moronic world we live in now, this is a short video of some dude on a scooter rope-towing a woman on a bicycle with a seat that isn’t anywhere remotely on straight, that’s wearing a child for a backpack. Cheese Mayo Is the Condiment You Need to Make

When it comes to burgers, I prefer to keep things simple. A thin, smashed patty, a good melty cheese, maybe a little onion, tomato, and pickles. I don’t need fried eggs, avocado, or super thicc bacon. I am, however, very into the idea of cheese mayonnaise, which frankly streamlines my already simple burger even…
