Tesla Model 3 earns Consumer Reports recommendation with brake update

Earlier this month, Consumer Reports chose not to recommend Tesla’s Model 3 due to a handful of factors, though most notably because of a long 60-to-0MPH braking distance. While Tesla claimed the car could come to a stop in 133 feet, Consumer Reports…

Walmart Offers To Foot College Tuition Bills for US Employees

Walmart will begin offering to subsidize college tuition for its 1.5 million workers in the United States, joining a growing list of companies that are helping employees pay for higher education as a perk in a tight labor market. From a report: The retailer’s 1.5 million employees can now pursue associate’s or bachelor’s degrees in business or supply-chain management at three nonprofit schools for $1 a day, according to a statement Wednesday. Walmart will subsidize tuition, books and fees and provide support with the application and enrollment processes. As many as 68,000 employees might sign up, Walmart executives estimated. “Many of our associates don’t have the opportunity to complete a degree,” said Drew Holler, Walmart’s U.S. vice president of people innovation, in an interview. “We felt strongly that this is something that would improve their lives and help us run a better business.” The tuition program — offered to part-time staff as well as full-timers — is the latest move by Walmart to improve employee retention and engagement. A handful of other companies, including Starbucks and Amazon, also offer tuition support.

Senators probe driverless car testing amid lax Trump oversight

In the last couple of years, companies like Uber, Waymo, and GM’s Cruise have been testing more and more self-driving vehicles on public roads. Yet important details about those tests have been kept secret.

Two Democratic senators are determined to change that. Last Friday, they sent out letters to 26 car and technology companies seeking details about their testing activities—part of a broader investigation into the safety of driverless vehicles.

“In March, a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle operating under autonomous technology,” wrote Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) in their letter to Uber. “The latest fatality has raised many questions about the processes companies have in place to guard public safety when testing this type of technology on public roads.”

Intel Leaks Model Numbers of Entry Level Xeon E-2000 CPUs

Intel has published model numbers of its upcoming Xeon E processors based on the Coffee Lake-S core. The new chips will be used in entry-level servers and workstations and will be formally introduced in the coming weeks. In addition, Intel announced plans to use a yet another test and assembly line to build its Coffee Lake chips.

It is not a secret that Intel has been planning to rebrand its entry-level Xeon processors from Xeon E3 to Xeon E with the Coffee Lake family. Now, in a document sent to customers, Intel confirmed the plan. The new CPUs will feature up to six cores, they will be compatible with motherboards based on the Intel C246 PCH, and their main differences from Intel’s consumer 8th Gen Core processors will be support for ECC, remote maintenance (Intel AMT), different frequencies, and TDP levels.

Based on the Intel publication, the Xeon E-2000 lineup of products will include at least 10 models with seven of them featuring iGPUs (they feature the G suffix in their model number).

Intel’s Upcoming Xeon E-2000 CPUs
Model Number Product Code S-Spec Vertical Segment
Xeon E-2124 CM8068403654414 SR3WQ Server
Xeon E-2124G CM8068403654114 SR3WL Workstation
Xeon E-2126G CM8068403380219 SR3WU Workstation
Xeon E-2134 CM8068403654319 SR3WP Server
Xeon E-2136 CM8068403654318 SR3WW Server
Xeon E-2144G CM8068403654220 SR3WM Workstation
Xeon E-2146G CM8068403380116 SR3WT Workstation
Xeon E-2174G CM8068403654221 SR3WN Workstation
Xeon E-2176G CM8068403380018 SR3WS Workstation
Xeon E-2186G CM8068403379918 SR3WR Workstation

In a document sent to clients, Intel announced plans to use the third manufacturing facility to test and assembly its 8th Gen Core, Pentium Gold and Xeon products. The production site is located in Vietnam and will be used to build both boxed and tray versions of Intel’s Coffee Lake processors. As a part of the announcement, Intel had to disclose exact model numbers of CPUs that will be tested, assembled, and packaged in Vietnam and therefore had to disclose model numbers of the upcoming products. The document to customers indicates that the first batches of processors listed will ship on June 25, 2018.

These CPUs are expected to be formally announced in the next few weeks. When asked, Intel stated that they do not comment on rumor or speculation… despite the fact that this was from an official Intel document.

Time Traveling F1 Race Car During The 2018 Monaco Grand Prix

time-traveling-race-car.jpg

This is a video from the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix of an F1 race car that’s throwing sparks and causes the car behind it to time travel when it hits 88MPH. Why the car that was actually throwing the sparks wasn’t the one to time travel is beyond me, but the space time continuum is a wild and unpredictable thing. Like a roommate who rolls dice to decide whether or not to wear pants. “I wear them when I need to.” Jesus — we went to IKEA, Derek.

Keep going for the video.

Mary Meeker's 2018 Internet Trends Report

Mary Meeker has published her anticipated internet trends report of 2018. This year, the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner released 284 slides in rapid succession, covering everything from smartphone behavior in the U.S. to tech company competition in China. Some takeaways: 1. 2017 was the first year in which smartphone unit shipments didn’t grow at all. As more of the world become smartphone owners, growth has been harder and harder to come by. The same goes for internet user growth, which rose 7 percent in 2017, down from 12 percent the year before. With more than half the world online, there are fewer people left to connect. 2. People, however, are still increasing the amount of time they spend online. U.S. adults spent 5.9 hours per day on digital media in 2017, up from 5.6 hours the year before. Some 3.3 of those hours were spent on mobile, which is responsible for overall growth in digital media consumption. 3. Despite the high-profile releases of $1,000 iPhones and Samsung Galaxy Notes, the global average selling price of smartphones is continuing to decline. 4. Mobile payments are becoming easier to complete. China continues to lead the rest of the world in mobile payment adoption, with over 500 million active mobile payment users in 2017. 5. Voice-controlled products like Amazon Echo are taking off. The Echo’s installed base in the U.S. grew from 20 million in the third quarter of 2017 to more than 30 million in the fourth quarter. 6. Tech companies are facing a “privacy paradox.” They’re caught between using data to provide better consumer experiences and violating consumer privacy. The most popular courses on learning platform Coursera last year were (in descending order): Machine Learning (Stanford), Neural Networks & Deeper Learning (Deeplearning.ai), Learning How to Learn: Powerful Mental Tools to Help You Master Tough Subjects (UC San Diego), Introduction to Mathematical Thinking (Stanford), Bitcoin & Cryptocurrency Technologies (Princeton), Programming for Everybody (University of Michigan), Algorithms, Part I (Princeton), English for Career Development (University of Pennsylvania), Neural Networks / Machine Learning (University of Toronto), and Financial Markets (Yale).
