Intel Launches Optane DIMMs Up To 512GB

Intel announced the availability of its long-awaited Optane DIMMs Wednesday, bringing 3D XPoint memory onto the DDR4 memory bus. From a report: The modules that have been known under the Apache Pass codename will be branded as Optane DC Persistent Memory, to contrast with Optane DC SSDs, and not to be confused with the consumer-oriented Optane Memory caching SSDs. The new Optane DC Persistent Memory modules will be initially available in three capacities: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB per module. This implies that they are probably still based on the same 128Gb 3D XPoint memory dies used in all other Optane products so far. The modules are pin-compatible with standard DDR4 DIMMs and will be supported by the next generation of Intel’s Xeon server platforms.

Beijing Security Fair – For Security Spying

When you think of a “security fair,” you likely think of an event that is based around things being more secure for you. In China, a security fair seems to be all about you having less security from all sort of surveillance on you. It is called the China International Exhibition on Police Equipment. This is a fairly long read over on Reuters, but let me give you some excerpts from the article to give you an idea what is going on, on the other side of the globe, but will assuredly be delivered to us here in the USA in some form or another soon.

The China International Exhibition on Police Equipment is something of a one-stop shop for China’s police forces looking to arm up with the latest in “black tech” – a term widely used to refer to cutting-edge surveillance gadgets.

It can crack your smartphone password in seconds, rip personal data from call and messaging apps, and peruse your contact book.

Beijing-based Hisign Technology said its desktop and portable phone scanners can retrieve even deleted data from over 90 mobile applications on smart phones, including overseas platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

“We are actually using these kinds of scanners in Xinjiang already, but I am interested in this one as it claims to be more successful with iOS phones than other brands,” said the policeman, surnamed Gu, who traveled 3,000 kilometers to attend the fair. He declined to provide his given name.

The robot, shaped like R2-D2 from “Star Wars”, but with red flashing “ears” and over a dozen sensors and cameras, can identify people in a crowd, engage in conversations and broadcast police announcements.

The Ministry of Public Security, which hosted the Beijing fair, did not respond to a request for comment.

This month be quiet! released its new System Power U9 PSUs that are aimed at system builders and will be sold at more affordable prices than other products from the supplier. The new PSUs carry the 80Plus Bronze badge and are rated for 400-700 W output. As the name of the brand suggests, the power supplies promise to be quiet.

be quiet!’s System Power U9 PSUs are compliant with the ATX 12V 2.4 and EPS 12V 2.92 specifications (EPS for 600 W and 700 W only), they fully support Intel’s C6 and C7 power states, as well as meet the Energy Star 6.1 guidelines. The System Power U9 power supplies feature two strong power rails and come with up to four PCIe connectors used by graphics cards and other demanding components. In a bid to make the PSUs quiet, they are outfitted with a 120-mm temperature-controlled fan.

Bcachefs Linux File-System Benchmarks vs. Btrfs, EXT4, F2FS, XFS

With Bcachefs on its trek towards the mainline Linux kernel, this week I conducted some benchmarks using the very latest Bcachefs file-system code and compared its performance to the mainline Btrfs, EXT4, F2FS, and XFS file-system competitors on both rotating and solid-state storage.

Is This Really What the Google Pixel 3 Will Look Like?

After an image that allegedly shows screen protectors for Google’s third-gen Pixels popped up on Weibo earlier this week, smartphone fans immediately started imagining how the shape of the screen protector might reflect the phone’s final design. And of course, some of the fans took the available evidence and spun up…

Man who rescued Star Trek: TNG bridge set now faces child porn charges

Seen here in a 2014 photo, Huston Huddleston shows off a vinyl wall panel that he rescued from the trash heap. (credit: Cyrus Farivar)

Huston Huddleston, the man who gained some nerd cred in August 2012 after he “saved the bridge” of a discarded Enterprise-D touring set, has been arrested in Southern California on child pornography and other related felony charges.

In total, Huddleston now faces four charges, including one under California Penal Code 311.11(c)(1), for possessing “more than 600 images.” If convicted, Huddleston would face a minimum sentence of a year in county jail or at least 16 months in state prison. (It is not immediately clear why the criminal complaint, which Ars obtained at the Los Angeles courthouse, has four charges when online court records only show three.)

Huddleston is currently being held by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on $750,000 bail. He is being represented by David Moore, of the Los Angeles Public Defender’s Office. Moore did not immediately respond to Ars’ request for comment. On May 22, BleedingCool.com reported that Huddleston has pleaded not guilty.

Hacker gets Super NES games running on unmodified NES

Tom Murphy explains how he got a Super NES game running on an unmodified NES.

At this point, we’re used to modern computers being able to perform near-perfect emulation of older gaming hardware via software trickery. The latest project from Tom “Tom7” Murphy, though, seems poised to coin its own definition for “reverse emulation” by running a playable Super NES game on actual unmodified NES hardware.

Murphy breaks down this wizardry in a pair of detailed videos laying out his tinkering process. Though the NES hardware itself is untouched, the cartridge running this reverse emulation is a heavily customized circuit board (ordered from China for about $10), with a compact, multi-core Raspberry Pi 3 attached to handle the actual Super NES emulation.

The Pi essentially replaces the PPU portion of the cartridge, connecting to the NES via a custom-coded EEPROM chip that tells the system how to process and display what would normally be an overwhelming stream of graphical data coming from the miniature computer. Only the CIC “copyright” chip from the original cartridge remains unmodified to get around the hardware’s lockout chip.

Cool: Cosplayer Mods Nerf Gun With Holographic Spell Caster

Note: Keep your volume in check.

This is a video demonstration of a Nerf gun modified by a Japanese cosplayer to cast some custom holographic spells in the air. Obviously they’re not REAL holograms, they’re images created by one of those quickly spinning LED wands that tricks your eyes into seeing things thanks to humans’ persistence of vision. Some more info while I close my eyes for a few and pretend I’m on a beach somewhere, hopefully in your arms:

The holographic images are created using an effect called persistence of vision, where the human eye holds onto images for a split second longer than light rays are actually hitting the retina. It’s what allows us to interpret the images flashing across the pixels on a screen as moving video, instead of just a slideshow.

That’s just like my eyes — always playing tricks on me. Take the girl I was making out with at the bar Saturday night for example. “That was a empty beer pitcher.” Exactly, a solid ten.

Keep going for the video, demo starts at 0:35, and a look at the build at 1:20.

Consumer Reports Recommends Tesla's Model 3 After Braking Fix

Consumer Reports said on Wednesday that it now recommends Tesla’s Model 3 sedan after its latest tests showed that a firmware update improved the car’s braking distance by nearly 20 feet. From a report: The magazine last week flagged “big flaws” in the car, including braking slower than a full-sized pickup truck, while also highlighting many positives. In a tweet, Mr. Musk said he really appreciates “the high quality critical feedback from @ConsumerReports. Road noise & ride comfort already addressed too. UI improvements coming via remote software update later this month.”
