Ford Patents Driverless Police Car That Ambushes Lawbreakers Using AI

Ford has developed a patent for a police car that issues tickets without even pulling you over. The same car could also use artificial intelligence to find good hiding spots to catch traffic violators (Warning: source may be paywalled; alternative source) and identify drivers by scanning license plates, tapping into surveillance cameras and wirelessly accessing government records. The Washington Post reports: The details may sound far-fetched, as if they belong in the science-fiction action flick “Demolition Man” or a new dystopian novel inspired by Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” but these scenarios are grounded in a potential reality. They come from a patent developed by Ford and being reviewed by the U.S. government to create autonomous police cars. Ford’s patent application was published this month. Although experts claim autonomous vehicles will make driving safer and more rule-bound, Ford argues in its application that in the future, traffic violations will never disappear entirely. “While autonomous vehicles can and will be programmed to obey traffic laws, a human driver can override that programming to control and operate the vehicle at any time,” the patent’s application says. “When a vehicle is under the control of a human driver there is a possibility of violation of traffic laws. Thus, there will still be a need to police traffic.”

The patent application says that autonomous police vehicles don’t necessarily replace the need for human police officers for catching traffic scofflaws. Some “routine tasks,” such as issuing tickets for failure to stop at a stop sign, can be automated, the patent says, but other tasks that can’t be automated will be left to people. The application, which was filed in July 2016 and includes elaborate diagrams depicting the autonomous police car interacting with its environment, says officers could be inside the vehicle at all times and reclaim control of the car when necessary. But the application also shows how an autonomous police vehicle could be able to carry out many tasks we associate with human officers.

Are we already warmer than any time since the Ice Age ended?

Before the Industrial Revolution (roughly), Earth’s climate had actually been trending slightly cooler. The sudden reversal toward comparatively rapid warming gave rise to graphs frequently described as “hockey sticks” for their shape. But that stick only goes back about 2,000 years in climate records based on tree rings. So what happened between the end of the last “Ice Age” around 11,000 years ago and the beginning of the hockey stick?

Ice core records gave us the general idea decades ago—temperatures were relatively stable. But to understand what global temperature was doing more precisely, researchers have to compile lots of individual records from around the world. One such effort, published in 2013, showed the slow cooling trend beginning 5,000 years ago, making a super-long hockey stick following a warm plateau that was also about 5,000 years long.

But in 2014, another study showed that this pattern didn’t quite fit climate model simulations. Instead, the 2014 study showed a very gradual warming of about 0.5 degrees Celsius over the last 11,000 years. But a new study published this week compiled a separate climate record for the Northern Hemisphere—with slightly different results that look more like that model simulation.

NASA's Curiosity Rover Captures Breathtaking Panorama of Martian Landscape

After months of steady progress, NASA’s Curiosity rover has reached the top of Vera Rubin Ridge. And like the good mountain climber that it is, the rover took the opportunity to look around and bask in the view from up high. The resulting panorama—stitched together from 16 individual photos—is one of the most…

We spend less time on Facebook, but it still makes loads of money

The past few weeks haven’t been easy for Facebook. After announcing an overhaul to its News Feed earlier this month, one that places emphasis on people’s interactions over content from brands, the company has been taking heat for its new approach. No…

Xerox—the iconic American company that began in Rochester, New York in 1906—has been acquired by Fujifilm for $6.1 billion.

The two companies have existed for over half a century as corporate partners under the Fuji Xerox name. The new company, which will have a combined revenue of $18 billion, will keep the dual moniker as well as its pair of corporate headquarters in both Tokyo and Connecticut.

“The proposed combination has compelling industrial logic and will unlock significant growth and productivity opportunities for the combined company, while delivering substantial value to Xerox shareholders,” Jeff Jacobson, chief executive officer of Xerox, said in a statement.

Experts Say Facebook Should Get Rid Of It's App For Kids

A group letter was sent from the “Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood” to Mark Zuckerberg urging him to discontinue “Messenger Kids” a social media app for children under 13. “Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood” is a group of 100 experts, advocates and parenting organizations. Facebook said Monday that the app “helps parents and children to chat in a safer way,” and emphasized that parents are “always in control” of their kids’ activity.

To be brief I agree with the ccfc’s opinions. We have covered many stories about the dangers of social media when it comes to teens, going as far as 13 year olds going to “Smartphone Rehab.” I don’t think getting even younger people addicted to devices (more so than they already are), and exposing them to the proven problems of social media is a good idea.

Younger children are simply not ready to have social media accounts. They are not old enough to navigate the complexities of online relationships, which often lead to misunderstandings and conflicts even among more mature users. They also do not have a fully developed understanding of privacy, including what’s appropriate to share with others and who has access to their conversations, pictures, and videos.

Big Backing For 'Universal Stylus' Campaign

Google has backed an effort to standardise touch-screen styluses so they can be used on many devices. From a report: The Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) was launched, in 2015, to encourage companies to produce styluses that work on rivals’ products Dell, Intel, Lenovo, LG and graphics tablet-maker Wacom have all backed the project. However, Apple, Microsoft and Samsung have not. One expert suggested the big brands would keep their proprietary pens. Styluses designed to work with modern touch-screen devices and graphics tablets usually contain sensors to detect pressure, movement and orientation of the pen.

Timelapse Of LEGO Employees Building A Giant 10-Foot Replica Of A 2 X 4 Brick To Celebrate LEGO Group's 60th Anniversary

This is a short timelapse of four LEGO Master Builders at the company’s US headquarters in Enfield, Connecticut constructing a giant 10-foot, 1,200-pound, 133,000 piece replica of a 2 X 4 brick to celebrate the LEGO Group’s 60th anniversary. It took over 350 hours to complete,
although I’m not sure if those are people-hours or total hours. Whatever the case, I’d love the opportunity to run and tackle that thing as full speed. Do you think I’d break it, or do you think it would break me? “It would break you.” Trick question, I’m unbreakable. One time I got hit by a garbage truck, you know what happened? Trash went everywhere. That garbage truck lives in a landfill now.
