Unethical Breeding Is Creating Serious Health Problems for German Shepherds

German Shepherds are among the most popular breeds in the world, but their numbers have started to decline. New research suggests the decreasing demand for German Shepherds may have something to do with the breed’s propensity for health problems—likely the result of selective breeding for cosmetic traits.

Half the Atoms Inside Your Body …
..Used to be poop somewhere. Well not exactly. Scientists are saying some of what we have known all along, about us being made up of space dust, but its origins may be from a bit further away than expected. You are a world traveler and just did not know it. Live long and prosper.
Werk says tracking the flow of matter from the origin of the universe to present day, and understanding where the atoms that make up the air we breathe and water we drink is one of the fundamental problems in astrophysics. “It’s one of the holy grails of extra galactic cosmology,” she says. “Now, we’ve found that half these atoms come from outside our galaxy.”

I Tested Two Retro Consoles―One Good, One Hot Garbage

For all of the hullabaloo its generated with its tiny consoles, Nintendo didn’t invent retro gaming consoles. Not by a mile. When it released the NES Classic late last year, Nintendo wasn’t creating a new field of consoles fueled by nostalgia and the fat wallets of aging Gen Xers. Rather, Nintendo was reinventing the…

Top Established and Emerging Tech Companies Prefer To Hire Highly Educated Candidates, Not Dropouts
An anonymous reader shares a report:It may seem like Silicon Valley is populated entirely with celebrity college dropouts, but in fact, they’re the exception to the rule. Going to college pays off, and to land a job at one of the most coveted tech employers, you’ll need to stay in school. Data analysis site Paysa looked at over 8,200 job posting and over 70,000 resumes at tech “titans” (companies worth at least $100 billion with an IPO more than 10 years ago) and “tech disruptors” (companies worth at least $10 billion with an IPO within the last 10 years) and found that employees at these companies are highly educated, not dropouts. A disproportionate number of employees at these sought-after companies actually have advanced degrees, and one company stood out as employing the highest percentage of workers with Ph.D.s — Google. A whopping 16 percent of positions at Google require a doctorate degree. Less than 2 percent of Americans have earned a doctoral degree and an even smaller percentage have studied topics that are relevant to Google’s work.

Silverstone Announces New SFF Chassis: RVZ03 With RGB Light Strip
Silverstone, a familiar face in several enthusiast markets, has announced a new Small Form Factor (SFF) case, the RVZ03. Nestled in its Raven “extreme enthusiast chassis” line, the RVZ03 is an update from their existing RVZ01 chassis from both a styling perspective and the addition of integrated RGB LEDs, giving the lineup its first RGB fix. Silverstone says the Raven Series RVZ03 “…redefines SFF computing with flair.”
The front panel styling differs in appearance versus its predecessor by reshaping the front fascia to give it a more angular shapes as compared to the more plain panel of the RVZ01. The “flair” Silverstone was talking about comes in the form of the RGB LED strip on that front panel. They mention it has the same interior room, supporting Mini-ITX and Mini-DTX motherboards, a standard ATX(PS2) power supply up to 150mm (Silverstone recommends 140mm with flat cables), space for large graphics cards up to 13” (330mm) x 5.88” (149mm) wide, and has “superb air cooling performance”. There is room for up to four 2.5” SSDs or HDDs internally for storage needs. Further, the case can be laid flat or standing up as to fit in whatever space buyers may have.
Looking at the restyled front panel, it holds two USB3.0 ports, 7mm audio and microphone jacks, power/reset buttons, and a drive activity light. The added RGB LED visual is a line running through the front panel of the case, parting the USB/Audio jacks and the Power/Reset buttons on either side. The RVZ03 includes Silverstone’s LSB01 RGB light strip control box for allowing expansion and control over additional RGB strips. RGB LED regulation can be done in two ways. First. via the control box itself allowing to swap between several modes (single color, breathing, gradient, and a rotation of those). The second method is by using motherboard RGB software including AURA Sync, AUR RGB LED, RGB Fusion, and Mystic Light.
Below is a complete list of specifications:

The RVZ03 comes with two 120mm, 1500RPM, 18dB(a) fans on the top and bottom of the case with space for an additional 120mm fan. Both included fans are bringing fresh air in the case setting up a positive pressure environment. Silverstone says this is to help prevent dust buildup inside the chassis and quietness. The maximum height of the CPU cooler must be 83mm or less. There is also support for using AIO solutions as well.

The RVZ03 is available in Europe starting today with pricing set at 97.50€ (about $114) excluding VAT. Pricing and availability for the US market was not available at the time of publication.

Senators buck Sessions, move to protect state medical marijuana laws

The Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved a budget amendment that would prevent the Department of Justice from cracking down on state-legal medical marijuana—likely to the consternation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
The amendment prevents the Department of Justice from using any of its funds to prevent states from “implementing a law that authorizes the use, distribution, possession, or cultivation of medical marijuana.” It was added by a voice vote to the 2018 Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bill.
The amendment is similar to the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment, which was present in an appropriations bill covering fiscal 2017 and has been around for years. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) is also moving a similar amendment through the House.

Life In A Nutshell: This Hamster In A Running Wheel

This is a video captured by Twitter user @_missmiranduh’s brother, who works at Petsmart. It stars a hamster trying to run its wheel before getting tripped up by another hamster and hanging on to the side of the wheel. It’s the perfect metaphor for life because 1) no matter how fast you run you don’t get anywhere and 2) you’re not even in control of the wheel anyways, some other hamster is, and it doesn’t stop when you start eating shit. “Is that other hamster…God?” I was going to say the Puppetmaster, but sure.
Keep going for the video.

iPhone: Get a One-Handed Keyboard Without Waiting for iOS 11

An End To Phone Pranking
An anonymous reader shares a report: A researcher at Carnegie Mellon University has developed an intelligent system that is helping the U.S. Coast Guard to distinguish and weed out prank mayday calls that cost it up to millions of dollars a year when it flies or motors out on pointless rescue missions, per Govtech.com. The program, created by Carnegie Mellon’s Rita Singh, creates a barcode of a person’s voice, deciphering whether the caller really is on a boat or actually in a house somewhere. It can unmask repeat pranksters since it can pick up telltale markers and match them up.

Calibri Font Plays Its Role: Pakistan Now Sans Sharif as Prime Minister is Disqualified
Usama Jawad, writing for Neowin: A few weeks ago, we reported that Microsoft’s Calibri font has been used as evidence against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in a corruption case. Today, Sharif has been disqualified from his position as a part of the court’s final verdict of the case. The case concerns the “Panama Papers”, which is a collection of 11.5 million documents detailing information related to over 200,000 offshore accounts. Ever since the Panama Papers were anonymously leaked back in 2015, there has been a major shift in the political situation in many countries. One such country is Pakistan, where the names of numerous members of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family were spotted in the papers. If you aren’t aware of the Calibri controversy, it is as follows: Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz submitted photocopies of several documents in order to deny any corruption, but it appears that the documents contained Microsoft’s Calibri font, even though they were dated February 6, 2006. It is important to note that the font wasn’t commercially available until much later. Despite being created in 2004, the font did not reach the general public until January 30, 2007.
