Sony Suspends Thousands Of PlayStation Network Accounts in UK, Allegedly Because Of Issue With PayPal

An anonymous reader writes: PlayStation Network (PSN) users in the UK who’ve paid via PayPal have had their accounts suspended. ‘Thousands’ of users this week received an automatic refund for purchases they made with the US money transfer service. According to game blog Kotaku, since Sony hasn’t received money from those users, their accounts have been suspended. Neither Sony nor Paypal have addressed the issue yet.

Marc Summers Of Double Dare Discusses Nickelodeon's Slime

marc-summers-nickelodeon-slime.jpg

This is a video from Tech Insider of Double Dare and What Would You Do? host Marc Summers discussing Nickelodeon’s slime and what it was made of. Personally, I always thought it was boogers and pancake mix.

Nick’s early slime was made from oatmeal, vanilla pudding, and applesauce with green food coloring according to Summers.

That actually doesn’t sound that bad. Granted it’s not something I’d ask my mom to make me for breakfast, but it is something I could see myself trying on a dare. “Double dare.” Physical challenge! Man, those were the days.

Keep going for the informative video.

Halo-inspired fan-game gets conditional thumbs up from Microsoft

When you write about the game industry for a while, you can end up writing about fan game projects that have been shut down by the original publishers with depressing frequency. Everyone from Square Enix to Blizzard to Nintendo (especially Nintendo) has sent cease-and-desist letters to passionate fans over games based on their popular properties. The companies often cite the need to protect their legal copyrights to characters and related works.

So it’s nice when, on occasion, we’re able to write about a fan game that actually gets some level of tacit approval from the developer of the original title. That’s what is happening with Installation 01, a Halo fan-game project being built in Unity in order to recapture the classic feel of Halo 2 and Halo 3 for Windows, Mac, and Linux players. Apparently, the team behind that game has worked out an arrangement to continue development without any legal trouble from the Halo-makers at 343 Industries or its corporate parent Microsoft.

The Installation 01 team wrote in a community update this week that they have been “maintaining a level of contact with 343 Industries over the past several months,” eventually culminating in a meet-and-greet to talk about details of the project and its legal status. After what the team calls an “incredibly informational and very positive” phone call, they say “we have been ensured that Installation 01 is not under imminent legal threat, provided we remain non-commercial in nature and scope, and continue to follow Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules to the letter.”

In attempt to achieve YouTube stardom, woman accidentally kills her boyfriend

A Minnesota woman has been charged with manslaughter after she shot and killed her boyfriend as part of the pair’s attempt to become YouTube celebrities.

According to court documents, Monalisa Perez called 911 on June 26 at around 6:30pm local time to say that she had shot Pedro Ruiz III. The two had set up two video cameras to capture Perez firing the gun at Ruiz while he held a book in front of his chest. Ruiz apparently convinced Perez that the book would stop the bullet from a foot away. The gun, a Desert Eagle .50 caliber pistol, was not hindered by the book.

Ruiz, who was found with a single gunshot in his chest, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trump to sign executive order creating a national space council

Later today, the White House is expected to announce that President Trump has signed an executive order to reinstate the National Space Council. This should finally kick off the much-anticipated formulation of a space policy from the Trump administration, which will encompass military, civil, and commercial interests. The new council, led by Vice President Mike Pence, has the potential to do a great deal of good—or it could further muddy the waters of what already is kind of a mess.

Space policy experts are hoping for the former. “I think bringing back the National Space Council could be an improvement, but it’s not guaranteed,” Brian Weeden, a technical adviser to the Secure World Foundation, told Ars. “Much depends on what the Council will focus on and how it interacts with the other inter-agency processes,” he said. Weeden’s organization promotes sustainable and peaceful uses of outer space.

Pence

The key member of the council will be its chairman, Pence, who has shown a burgeoning interest in space matters. In early June, the vice president visited Johnson Space Center in Houston to address NASA’s newest class of astronaut candidates. And last week, Pence visited two key space command facilities in Colorado, Schriever Air Force Base, and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. Two sources have also told Ars that he will visit NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida next week.

More on SteamVR Knuckles Controllers

We put up a video of SteamVR Knuckles Controllers in action inside VR previously, and many people came back wanting to see the actual controllers in action rather than only what you could do with those inside VR. The crew over at Cloudhead Games has delivered exactly that. Pretty cool in action. Looks like these are going to be a lot harder to throw across the room accidentally as well…not that I have ever done that.

Cloudhead’s Denny Unger shows off the latest hardware from Valve and SteamVR with the “Knuckles” motion controllers.

SteamVR Knuckles controllers bring Next Gen VR with capacitive sensors for all five fingers, grasp detection, and a unique form factor that allows you to let go at any time without dropping the controller.

Cloudhead Games are the guys behind The Gallery – Episode1: Call of Starseed that we performance reviewed last year. It is 50% off at Steam right now too and I highly suggest picking it up if you have not already.

Despite Hacking Charges, US Tech Industry Fought To Keep Ties To Russia Spy Service

The U.S. tech sector pushed the government to keep ties with Russia’s spy agency, despite reports that Moscow meddled in the U.S. presidential election, Reuters reported Friday. The sanctions imposed on Russia by the Obama administration last December outlawed U.S. companies from having relationships with Russia’s spy agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB), which presented a dilemma to Western tech companies. Reuters says, the FSB also acts as a regulator that approves the importing of technology to Russia that contains encryption, which is used in products such as cellphones and laptops. Joel Schectman, Dustin Volz and Jack Stubbs, reporting for Reuters: Worried about the sales impact, business industry groups, including the U.S.-Russia Business Council and the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, contacted U.S. officials at the American embassy in Moscow and the Treasury, State and Commerce departments, according to five people with direct knowledge of the lobbying effort. The campaign, which began in January and proved successful in a matter of weeks, has not been previously reported. […] The sanctions would have meant the Russian market was “dead for U.S. electronics” said Alexis Rodzianko, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, who argued against the new restrictions. “Every second Russian has an iPhone, iPad, so they would all switch to Samsungs,” he said. […] The lobbyists argued the sanction could have stopped the sale of cars, medical devices and heavy equipment, all of which also often contain encrypted software, according to a person involved in the lobbying effort. The goal of the sanctions was to sever U.S. business dealings with the FSB — not end American technology exports to Russia entirely, the industry groups argued. “The sanction was against a government agency that has many functions, only one of them being hacking the U.S. elections,” said Rodzianko.

You're Wasting Water!: Cat Repeatedly Flushes Toilet

cat-flushing-toilet.jpg

These are two videos of a tuxedo cat named Crazy Eyes (great name) repeatedly flushing a toilet after learning how to do so. In owner Curt Coleman’s own words while I wrap all the shredded toilet paper back onto the roll and pray I don’t touch my bare ass with a finger wiping later.

This is the reason my water bill was outrageous. Finally had to start leaving the door closed when I left for work. He was doing this numerous times throughout the day…Hearing the toilet flush when I am in the house alone can be startling. Especially after watching The Conjuring…in the dark…BAD CRAZY! BAD CAT!

Admittedly, hearing the toilet flush when no one else is home does sound terrifying. That said, I actually trained my cat to use the toilet instead of the litter box. The only problem is he never learned to flush and there’s nothing worse than walking into the bathroom to see a turd-filled, unflushed toilet bowl so now we’re back to the litter box thing, the end.

Keep going for the videos.

50 million US homes have only one 25Mbps Internet provider or none at all

Enlarge (credit: Getty Images | Steven Puetzer)

More than 10.6 million US households have no access to wired Internet service with download speeds of at least 25Mbps, and an additional 46.1 million households live in areas with just one provider offering those speeds, a new analysis has found. That adds up to more than 56 million households lacking any high-speed broadband choice over wired connections. Even when counting access to fixed wireless connections, there are still nearly 50 million households with one 25Mbps provider or none at all.

The data comes from a report by researchers who evaluated Federal Communications Commission data in order to shed more light on broadband deployment, or lack thereof. The FCC’s own reports on this data show the percentage of developed census blocks that have ISPs offering broadband at various speeds. The researchers attempted to improve upon that analysis by comparing the census block information to household data from the US Census Bureau’s 2015 American Community Survey in order to determine how many homes have or don’t have high-speed broadband access.

“We believe that looking at the household access counts is a better measure of access because many un/under-served census blocks are in very remote areas with few households,” they wrote. (The report was written by Hal Singer of Economists Incorporated and Ed Naef and Alex King of CMA Strategy Consulting.)
