France Drops Windows 10 Privacy Case After Microsoft Changes Telemetry Settings

Reader Mark Wilson writes: There have been lots of complaints about invasion of privacy since the release of Windows 10. Microsoft’s telemetry lead to several lawsuits, including one from France’s National Data Protection Commission which said Windows 10 was collecting ‘excessive personal data’ about users. But now the Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libert’s has decided to drop its case against Microsoft. The commission is happy that sufficient steps have been taken to reduce the amount of data that is collected and users are now informed about data collection.

How to Tell Unscientific "Thought Leaders" from People You Should Trust

The world of public intellectuals has been replaced by an inferior mob of “thought leaders,” says Daniel Drezner in his new book The Ideas Industry. These thinkers, rather than examining the world as it is, tend to push “big ideas” with unscientific bases that catch the public imagination. For example, in his book The

Athlete Poop Won't Improve Your Athletic Performance

The human body isn’t just your cells, but a home for trillions of bacteria. We know that many of those bacteria serve important purposes, and imbalances or a lack of diversity could lead to illness. But research into this field is pretty new. At least, new enough that you shouldn’t just transplant someone else’s gut…

Four Minutes Of A Youtuber Petting Their Domesticated Jumping Spider

petting-pet-spider.jpg

This is a four minute video of Youtube Little Centaurs petting one of their domesticated jumping spiders (Phidippus adumbratus). Nice eyelashes. Some more information about how chill this particular spider is while I post a Craigslist ad looking for some chill spiders to hang out with me this holiday weekend and crash some barbecues:

Personality among Phidippus jumpers can vary a lot from one individual to the next, but the Adumbratus (adumbrati?) I found in Oxnard seem to all have a very calm disposition. I’ve noticed that one of the differences between wild and domesticated animals is whether the animal has an instinctual bite response to handling. There are certainly Phidippus that I’ve owned that could have been incited to bite under various conditions, but for this spider, I am not sure it would be possible to elicit a bite response outside of when she’ll be guarding eggs. As this video illustrates, she does not seem to be bothered by much – even touching the dorsal side of the abdomen, which seems to be universally disliked by jumpers, just makes her lazily take a few steps in the other direction.

When reached for comment, Indiana Jones refused to watch the video until I reminded him that it’s snakes, not spiders, that he hates so much. Then he still refused to watch the video because “Who are you?” and “How did you get this number?” Come on, I looked you up in the school directory, Dr. Jones.

Keep going for the video.

India Presses Microsoft For Windows Discount in Wake of Cyber Attacks

India is pressing Microsoft to offer a sharply discounted one-time deal to the more than 50 million Windows users in the country so that they can upgrade to the latest Windows 10 operating system in the wake of ransomware attacks, Reuters reported Friday. From the article: Microsoft officials in India have “in principle agreed” to the request, Gulshan Rai, India’s cyber security coordinator, told Reuters over the phone on Friday. If Microsoft agreed to such a discount, it could open up the global software giant to similar requests from around the world. Rai said the government was in talks with Microsoft management in India. It is not immediately clear whether any other countries were seeking similar deals.

'Asteroid Day' is a good time to learn about the threat of space rocks

On June 30th, 1908, more than 770 square miles of remote Russian forest were obliterated from the face of the Earth when a relatively small meteor, estimated at only around 400 feet across, unleashed 15 megatons of energy above the Stony Tunguska Riv…

GIGABYTE Announces AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Waterforce Xtreme Edition 11G and Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition 11G

Following up after last week’s teasers, GIGABYTE has officially announced two ultra-high-end graphics cards under its AORUS brand: the AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Waterforce Xtreme Edition 11G and the AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition 11G.

Both verbosely-named cards, as the Waterforce branding implies, are liquid-cooling oriented. The standard Waterforce Xtreme Edition is coupled with an all-in-one (AIO) closed loop cooler, while the Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition is outfitted with a full-size water block that can connect to a custom open loop. And so, without pesky fans taking up space, AORUS has dedicated the extra real estate on the card shrouds to a bountiful number of LEDs.

AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Waterforce Xtreme Editions 11G
Waterforce Xtreme Edition Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition
Boost Clock 1746MHz (OC Mode)

1721MHz (Gaming Mode)
Base Clock 1632MHz (OC Mode)

1607MHz (Gaming Mode)
Memory Clock 11448MHz (OC Mode)

11232MHz (Gaming Mode)
VRAM 11GB GDDR5X

(352-bit)
TDP Unspecified
Outputs 3x DP1.4, 2x HDMI2.0b (Rear), 1x HDMI2.0b (Front) 1x DL-DVI-D

VR Link VR Mode: 3x DP1.4, 3x HDMI2.0b

VR Link Standard Mode: 3x DP1.4, 1x HDMI2.0b (Rear), 1x DL-DVI-D
Power Connectors 2 x 8pin
Length 267mm
Width 2 Slot (36mm) 2 Slot (28mm)
Height 123mm 149mm
Cooler Type AIO CLC (120mm) Water Block (full-cover)
Price TBA

Generally speaking, both cards only differ in their cooling designs, having the same clocks, 12+2 power phases, and basic features. The 120mm AIO Waterforce Xtreme Edition has a water block that only covers the GPU, with a water block-cooled copper heatpipe and base plate covering the MOSFETs and VRAM. Behind the GPU, the card has a small copper piece embedded in the back plate. In comparison, the Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition has its water block and flow design covering all key components, and has a larger copper slab in the back plate.

Both cards offer the AORUS VR Link design for their display outputs. What this means is that an extra HDMI port is offered on the front (internal) side of the card, while the PCIe bracket has 2 HDMI ports, a DVI-D port, and 3 DisplayPorts. Due to the limited number of display controllers on the GP102 GPU, only 4 ports/displays can be used at one time. In standard mode, a maximum of 4 outputs can be used, selecting from among the first HDMI port, 3 DisplayPorts, and the DVI-D port on the PCIe bracket. In VR Mode, the DVI-D port is not used, and a maximum of 4 outputs can be used from among the 3 DisplayPorts and 3 HDMI ports. Ultimately, the idea is here that the front-facing HDMI can be used for a VR headset, while the rear HDMIs can still be utilized simultaneously for monitors without swapping cables.

As Xtreme Edition cards, the Waterforce and Waterforce WB qualify for an extra year of AORUS Care upon registration within 30 days of purchase, which then adds to AORUS’ standard three-year warranty for four total years. All-in-all, that could mean over 1400 days of guaranteed brightly-lit gaming sessions with RGB Fusion, AORUS’ LED software. For the WB variant, this includes lighting up the water block fittings and the AORUS eagle emblems on both sides of the card, giving the impression that AORUS has simply opted to create a giant rectangular LED that also happens to run games.

GIGABYTE has not announced pricing information at this time. A teaser posted by the official AORUS Twitter states 7/7/17, presumably the availability date for both cards.

When to Get an Annulment Instead of a Divorce

Ten years ago, I muscled a guy down the aisle. We had been together for six years, the relationship was becalmed, and I had pretty much decided that marriage was the only thing that would blow us out of our doldrums: We’d be official, we’d have kids, we’d have a decent set of dish towels. He reluctantly agreed.

Bummer: Giant Asteroids Not An Immediate Threat

Every few months, a journalist asks a scientist about the looming threat of Armageddon. That scientist’s quotes are then predictably blown out of proportion and turned into some iteration of “The End Is Nigh.” In light of Asteroid Day, which is today, we’d like to clarify some of the apocalyptic misinformation that’s…

Testimony: Shkreli’s plans to swindle patients is what hooked big investors

During Martin Shkreli’s federal trial this week for alleged securities and wire fraud, a former investor explained both how she got involved with the now infamous ex-pharmaceutical CEO what followed. In short, she testified that she was swindled by Shkreli after he made big promises to swindle vulnerable patients.

As lawyers painted dueling pictures of Shkreli as a con-man and also a “strange” yet brilliant financial mind, the investor, Sarah Hassan, laid out a story from 2010 that started with buzz in the hedge-fund world. She described a smooth-talking Shkreli, false name-dropping, and a winning business plan of sticking it to patients with rare diseases.

After investing $300,000 in one of the hedge funds Shkreli managed at the time, Hassan put in another $150,000 into Shkreli’s then new pharmaceutical company, Retrophin. According to the New York Times, she described his successful business pitch as this: “you can make a lot of money on orphan drugs, because the price per patient is quite high.”
