First Human-Pig 'Chimera' Created in Milestone Study

Scientists have created a human-pig hybrid in a milestone study that raises the prospect of being able to grow human organs inside animals for use in transplants. From a report: It marks the first time that embryos combining two large, distantly-related species have been produced. The creation of this so-called chimera — named after the cross-species beast of Greek mythology — has been hailed as a significant first step towards generating human hearts, livers and kidneys from scratch. Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, who led the work on the part-pig, part-human embryos at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, said: “The ultimate goal is to grow functional and transplantable tissue or organs, but we are far away from that. This is an important first step.” The study has reignited ethical concerns that have threatened to overshadow the field’s clinical promise. The work inevitably raises the spectre of intelligent animals with humanised brains and also the potential for bizarre hybrid creatures to be accidentally released into the wild. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) placed a moratorium on funding for the controversial experiments last year while these risks were considered.

First Person POV Of Guy Accidentally Skiing Off 150-Foot Cliff

skiing-cliff-diver.jpg

In so that’s what dying looks like news, this is the first person point of view GoPro footage of skier Devin Stratton accidentally skiing off the side of a 150-foot cliff in the Wasatch Mountain Range in Utah. Devin credits several small trees, the cushioning of his backpack, and 2.5-feet of fresh snow to breaking his fall and not killing him (he said he didn’t even get a bruise, just a broken helmet and equipment). Admittedly, there were other tracks up to the end of the cliff, so I could understand why Devin thought it was safe. However those look like snowmobile tracks and stopped just short of the cliff. Also the skier in front of him seems like they knew what was up, because they cut hard to the left well before the cliff. Whatever the case, I’m never leaving the bunny slope again. Oh who am I kidding, I’ve already broken my arm twice skateboarding and snowboarding, I can’t even risk the bunny slope. I’m afraid the next time something breaks it’ll kill me. Do you love me? “No.” There it went…my heart. Goodnight world. “I take it back.” No no no it’s too late I’m dead now.

Venezuelan officials arrest four Bitcoin miners on charges of stealing electricity

(credit: BTC Keychain)

On Thursday, Venezuelan officials announced the arrest of four Bitcoin miners in Charallave, a city south of Caracas, on charges of Internet fraud and electricity theft. The accused included three men and one woman, all between the ages of 23 and 57.

According to an Instagram post by Douglas Rico, the director of the Computer Crime Division of the Scientific, Penal, and Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC), the four were operating more than 300 Antminer units and selling the bitcoins “on a commercial website.” As per Bitcoin-focused blog Bitcoinist, the Corps director went on to say that the accused sold the bitcoins “on the Colombian Venezuelan border in Cúcuta, affecting the consumption and stability of electricity services in the area.”

Reason magazine published an article a few months ago detailing how, amid the collapse of Venezuela’s economy, people are turning to Bitcoin mining as a way to stay afloat. The country’s government heavily subsidizes electricity to the point where it costs about $0.02/kWh according to research project ClimateScope, so electricity-intensive Bitcoin mining sees a better return on investment in Venezuela than it might in a country with more expensive electricity.

America's Largest Offshore Wind Farm Just Got Approved

It’s been a rough week for environmentalists in America, but buried amidst a torrent of reports detailing the Trump administration’s war on climate science, one uplifting energy story has garnered comparably little attention: the United States may be getting a second offshore wind farm.

Galaxy S8 gets pictured: No home button, huge 5.8- and 6.2-inch displays

VentureBeat

Over at VentureBeat, Evan Blass has what is supposedly the first-ever live picture of the Samsung Galaxy S8. At first glance it looks like every other Samsung phone—the long edges on the front and back are still curved, the back is still glass, there is still a single bottom-firing speaker, and there’s still a heart rate sensor on the back. Look closer, though, and there are a few key differences.

First, there’s no home button. Samsung has been rumored to finally ditch physical buttons with the Galaxy S8, and this picture seems to line up with that expectation. The rumors say that Samsung will use on-screen software buttons on the S8, five years after Google started on-screen Android buttons with the Galaxy Nexus. There’s also no Samsung logo on the front, resulting in a very clean looking device.

DRAM Rally

Sadly, DRAM Rally is not a new game we will see in the future, although I am not so sure the concept is that great to begin with. However, Digitimes is reporting that the DRAM industry will fall short of demand in Q217 but will supplies will come back in Q3. So the moral of this boring news post is to go buy your DRAM now. Corsair is making a sweet 3600MHz DDR4 kit.

Nanya will have an estimated 30,000 12-inch wafers manufactured using 20nm process technology monthly in the first quarter of 2018, according to Lee. Meanwhile, Nanya’s 30nm process output will reduce to 30,000 units monthly, said Lee.

Customer Feedback Surveys Could Be Considered Harmful

Longtime Slashdot reader Stunt Pope writes: Customer Feedback surveys are now near-ubiquitous, subjecting us all to near-Black Mirror-esque pursuit to “rate your experience” for everything from going to the bank to ordering a pizza. Thanks to The Curse of Goodhart’s Law, all of these surveys are beyond useless and even damaging. Mark Jeftovic writes in a blog post: “The shop/hire-rate-reward feedback loop has become baked-in to some systems. Many live marketplaces incorporate these feedback transactions into ratings, which then become a score which then impacts future prospects of whomever is being rated. And that’s where the trouble starts. There is a point where this stops being useful and the knock-on effects of a ratings system predicated on feedback results becomes counter-productive. That point is when the ratings become targets. When a company decrees ‘All customer feedback ratings must score a minimum of X, or else…’ the company has just commenced the process of invalidating and corrupting all useful information to be gleaned from that feedback/survey process. A label which captures this concept is ‘Goodhart’s Law’ — after economist Charles Goodhart, who posited in essence that ‘when a measure becomes a target, it becomes useless.'”

If you’re shopping for a new pair of eyeglasses, you may get sticker shock when you pick up a pair of frames at your local optician.
