Playmobil's New Ghostbusters Toys Are So Great You'll Wish You Had a Childhood Do-Over

First teased back in June of last year, we got our first official photos of some of the new Playmobil Ghostbusters sets a little later in the year in October. But as the toys move closer to finally being available come May of this year, Playmobil is revealing all of the details at the Nuremberg International Toy Fair…

Atomic Metallic Hydrogen Made by Harvard

Atomic Metallic Hydrogen has never existed on Earth before, but the fine folks at Harvard just remedied that as they did not want to be outdone by Berkeley! Squeeze a good old Hydrogen atom down to where the the proton and electron are closer together and apparently some really “cool” things happen that are looking to have all sorts of uses…if they can do it at room temp.

“It takes a tremendous amount of energy to make metallic hydrogen,” Silvera explained. “And if you convert it back to molecular hydrogen, all that energy is released, so that would make it the most powerful rocket propellant known to man, and could revolutionize rocketry.”

Mystery New Windows SKU Could Be Resurrection Of Windows RT

How embarrassing was Windows RT for Microsoft? Not enough, apparently, since the company is bringing it back in the form of “Windows Cloud”—a name they hope will obscure the fact that it is the very same OS that fizzled out in 2013 and brought the Surface 2 and Nokia Lumia 2520 along with it into the abyss. If you can remember, RT flopped because it was restricted to running Windows Store apps—but now that the store is a little friendlier toward Win32 applications, some would argue that Windows Cloud may actually be relevant once certain restrictions are lifted. The OS is rumored to be positioned as a Chrome OS competitor, but I think that may be a struggle considering the state of the Windows Store.

…what, exactly, is Windows Cloud? A version of Windows 10 streamed from Azure? Another new Windows 10 subscription plan, in the vein of Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5? The dreaded (and still nonexistent) Windows 365? None of the above, my sources say. Windows 10 Cloud is a simplified version of Windows 10 that will be able to run only Unified Windows Platform (UWP) apps installed from the Windows Store, my contacts say. Think of it as being similar to the version of Windows 10 formerly known as Windows RT or the Windows 8.1 with Bing SKU. Windows 10 Cloud is meant to help Microsoft in its ongoing campaign to attempt to thwart Chromebooks with a simpler, safer, cheaper version of Windows 10, my contacts say, though Microsoft is unlikely to position it that way (publicly).

NVIDIA Launches New Game Bundle: For Honor & Ghost Recon Wildlands

The gaming scene tends to be slow this time of the year, and some may still feel burned out from Christmas spending, others still feel like giving. Leading up to two more big budget releases that are fast approaching, NVIDIA has prepared another bundle for those considering an upgrade to their gaming hardware.

The “Prepare for Battle” game bundle is launching today. Anyone who purchases a GeForce GTX 1080, GTX 1070, or a PC or laptop equipped with these cards will have the option to download either Ubisoft’s For Honor or Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands for free.

For Honor is a fast paced single and multiplayer action game that pits together Knights, Samurai and Vikings in hand-to-hand combat, requiring tactical thinking and fast reflexes. At the other end of the technology spectrum we have Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, the next step in a franchise that has been running for almost long enough to drive. ‘Wildlands’ is pitched as the very first military shooter in a massive open world that you can play entirely solo or in four-player co-op. For Honor will see release on February 14th, while Ghost Recon Wildlands will arrive on March 7th.

NVIDIA Current Game Bundles
Video Card Bundle
GeForce GTX Titan X (Pascal) None
GeForce GTX 1080/1070 Prepare for Battle
GeForce GTX 1060/1050Ti/1050 None
GeForce GTX 1080/1070 Desktops Prepare for Battle
GeForce GTX 1080/1070 Notebooks Prepare for Battle

NVIDIA is also debuting a new, and hopefully easier, way to redeem codes through GeForce Experience. Now customers will no longer have to wade through sign up webpages but can simply enter their code within GeForce Experience itself and have their choice of game automatically added to their Uplay account. Though I imagine one would still need to be signed into GeForce Experience, which for some may make the difference moot.

We haven’t yet received news to how long this offer will run, though we will update here when we catch news of the end date. Meanwhile it is worth remembering to verify the participation of any vendors purchased from as NVIDIA likely will not give codes for purchases made from sellers that are not participating.

Why An LSD High Lasts For So Long

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) has been credited, in part, for the creation of the iPhone, the polymerase chain reaction, as well as some pretty abstract artwork. Since the drug is classified as a Schedule 1 substance in the U.S., it’s been more difficult for scientists to legally study the drug and learn about how it affects the brain. Therefore, when a study (or two) is published it makes the findings all the more fascinating. Two studies were published last week (one in Current Biology, the other in Cell) that examine how LSD produces such diverse effects and why the drug takes so long to wear off. The Scientist reports the findings from for the first study: For the Current Biology study, 21 volunteers were given a placebo, a small dose of LSD alone, or the same dose of LSD but with kentaserin, a serotonin 2A antagonist. Study participants who took the kentaserin reported virtually the same experiences as those who took the placebo, and fMRI brain scans confirmed similar brain activities across participants in both groups. The serotonin 2A antagonist “blocked all the effects of LSD, so it was like if people didn’t take any drugs,” coauthor Katrin Preller, neuroscientist at the Zurich University Hospital in Switzerland told The Verge. “All the typical symptoms — hallucinations, everything — were gone.”
As for why an LSD high lasts for so long, Angus Chen has written an in-depth report on PBS Newshour about the findings from the study published in Cell: LSD and other psychoactive drugs work by binding to specialized proteins called receptors on the surfaces of neural cells. On the receptor protein is a sculpted “pocket,” into which molecules with the right shape can fit and thus stick to the cell, where they initiate changes in the brain. But different substances can often fit into the same receptor. Many receptors that bind LSD and DMT, for example, also fit the natural chemical messenger serotonin — which is produced in the body and helps regulate mood. Figuring out how each drug interacts with the same receptor in a different way is key to understanding why an LSD trip lasts all day whereas an experience with extracted DMT is often over in 15 minutes or less. By freezing an LSD molecule bound to a single brain cell receptor as a crystal in a lab, researchers were able to get a 3-D x-ray image of the drug and the protein locked together. The image showed Bryan Rother, a pharmacologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and senior author on the paper, and his co-authors something strange about the way LSD fit inside this receptor. Drugs typically come and go from receptor proteins like ships pulling in and out of a port. But when an LSD molecule lands on the receptor, the molecule snags onto a portion of the protein and folds it over itself as the molecule binds to the receptor. LSD seems to stimulate the receptor for the entire time it is trapped underneath the protein “lid,” Roth says. Proteins are in constant motion, so he thinks the lid eventually flops open, allowing the drug to fly out and the effects to wear off. But the team ran computer models that suggest it could take hours for that to happen. Until then, the trip goes on.
