Reddit says that it is going to start cracking down on abuse. The site says that it is targeting the “most toxic users” but didn’t say if that included their own CEO. He’ll probably just get a warning.
Social media website Reddit Inc, known for its commitment to free speech, will crack down on online harassment by banning or suspending users who target others, starting with those who have directed abuse at Chief Executive Steve Huffman. Huffman said in an interview with Reuters that Reddit’s content policy prohibits harassment, but that it had not been adequately enforced.

Barrett Brown, an award-winning journalist who was sentenced in January 2015 to more than five years in federal prison, has been released from federal prison in Texas. At the time of his sentencing, he had already served 28 months and had 34 months remaining. Brown was released early on good behavior.
On Tuesday, the first thing he did post-release was enjoy this Egg McMuffin from a local McDonald’s.
As Ars reported previously, in April 2014 Brown took a plea deal admitting guilt on three charges: “transmitting a threat in interstate commerce,” interfering with the execution of a search warrant, and being “accessory after the fact in the unauthorized access to a protected computer.”

The onset of Oklahoma’s earthquakes several years ago suddenly changed life in the north-central part of the state. But since they are self-inflicted, this seismic shift need not be a permanent one.
The earthquakes have been triggered by the injection of large volumes of wastewater in deep disposal wells, which is able to raise fluid pressure and loosen long-locked faults in the crystalline “basement” rock below. The wastewater comes from oil and gas wells in the area, which cough up a lot of dirty, salty water along with the hydrocarbons.
Just a few weeks ago, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake caused a fair amount of damage to buildings in Cushing—buildings that were never designed to withstand seismic activity. And in September, a magnitude 5.8 quake in Pawnee set a historical record for the state.

President-elect Donald Trump will have access to a system which can send unblockable texts to every phone in the United States once he becomes the president. From a report on NYMag: These 90-character messages, known as Wireless Emergency Alerts (or WEAs), are part of a program put in place after Congress passed the Warning, Alert, and Response Network (WARN) Act, in 2006. WEAs allow for targeted messages to be sent to every cell phone getting a signal from certain geographically relevant cell towers (or, in a national emergency, all of them). While it’d be a true nightmare to get screeching alerts from your phone that “Loser Senate Democrats still won’t confirm great man Peter Thiel to Supreme Court. Sad!”, there are some checks and balances on this. While President-elect Trump hasn’t shown much impulse control when it comes to his favorite mass-messaging service, Twitter, the process for issuing a WEA isn’t as simple as typing out a 90-character alert from a presidential smartphone and hitting “Send.” All WEAs must be issued through FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert Warning System, meaning that an emergency alert from the president still has at least one layer to pass through before being issued. While FEMA is under control of the executive branch (the head of FEMA is selected by the president, and reports to the Department of Homeland Security), the agency would have a vested interest in not seeing their alert system bent toward, uh, non-emergency ends.

A 24-year old IT worker found himself stuck in traffic during his commute in Jakarta, Indonesia and decided to hack an electronic billboard to stream the Japanese pornographic film ‘Watch Tokyo Hot’. The movie played for about ten minutes before authorities were able to cut the power to the sign. Police and cybercrime specialists in the largely conservative, Muslim-majority country launched a hunt for the perpetrator and on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old IT analyst in his office.
Access to pornographic websites is blocked in Indonesia, and romantic scenes in films and television programmes are often blurred or cut altogether by state censors.
