Classic Mac Startup Chime Not Present in New MacBook Pros

Okay, we gave Apple crap when they deleted the headphone jack on the new iPhones. We even poked a little fun at the crew in Cupertino for charging $25 for a cable to connect an iPhone to a MacBook Pro. That said, I’m not sure if this new “controversy” is something that will upset anyone. Where are my Mac guys at, is this something that upsets you? Let us know.

The iconic chiming startup sound was originally made to indicate that diagnostic tests have found no hardware or software issues. A similar sound has accompanied almost every Mac boot sequence since 1991 and the most recent F-sharp chord incarnation was first used in the iMac G3.

Trick or Treat! Google issues warning of critical Windows vulnerability in wild

Enlarge / Win32k.sys has some problems. Again.

Recently, Google’s Threat Analysis Group discovered a set of zero-day vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash and the Microsoft Windows kernel that were already being actively used by malware attacks against the Chrome browser. Google alerted both Adobe and Microsoft of the discovery on October 21, and Adobe issued a critical fix to patch its vulnerability last Friday. But Microsoft has yet to patch a critical bug in the Windows kernel that allows these attacks to work—which prompted Google to publicly announce the vulnerabilities today.

“After 7 days, per our published policy for actively exploited critical vulnerabilities, we are today disclosing the existence of a remaining critical vulnerability in Windows for which no advisory or fix has yet been released,” wrote Neel Mehta and Billy Leonard of Google’s Threat Analysis Group.”This vulnerability is particularly serious because we know it is being actively exploited.”

The bug being exploited could allow an attacker to escape from Windows’ security sandbox. The sandbox, which normally allows only user-level applications to execute, lets programs execute without needing administrator access while isolating what it can access on the local system through a set of policies.

Why You Usually Shouldn't Apply to Multiple Jobs at One Company and What to Do Instead

I have vivid memories from my hiring days of going through applications for various roles and finding that one person who decided to submit an application for every single one. It happened more than you’d think—and honestly, it happened more than even I anticipated when I was new to recruiting. However, as I started reviewing more and more resumes, one thing became apparent: Somewhere out there is a person who is apparently telling people that the best way to get an employer’s attention is to apply for as many of their opening as humanly possible.

86-Year Old Grandma Accused of Pirating a Zombie Game

An 86-year-old woman named Christine McMillan from Ontario, Canada has been accused of downloading a zombie game she’s never heard of. She faces $5,000 in potential damages. From a report on TorrentFreak (condensed): McMillan is one of the hundreds of thousands of people who’ve been accused of copyright infringement under Canada’s “notice and notice” regime. Due to a change to Canada’s copyright law early last year, ISPs are now required to forward copyright infringement notices to their customers. In the letter received from anti-piracy group Canipre, she’s threatened with thousands of dollars in damages, if she doesn’t comply. “They didn’t tell me how much I owed, they only told me that if I didn’t comply, I would be liable for a fine of up to $5,000 and I could pay immediately by entering my credit card number,” McMillan told Go Public. At first, McMillan thought she was dealing with spammers but Cogeco, her Internet provider, confirmed that the email with the settlement offer was legitimate. The power of the settlement scheme lies in the uncertainty people face. McMillan is obviously not happy with the notice-and-notice legislation which she brands as “foolish.”

Supreme Court Asks Feds To Chime In On Decade-Old "Dancing Baby" YouTube Case

Does anyone know how or why this case is still going? Anyone with a brain knows that going after this lady and her dancing baby video was just wrong. The fact that this has been dragging on for a decade and has gone all the way to the Supreme Court is truly astounding.

Lenz’s stance is that anyone who viewed the video would have seen there was no commercial intent and that it was a clear instance of a protected fair use. She, now with the support of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, sued Universal Music in July 2007, alleging that the publisher had not considered the possibility that the short burst of music in the dancing baby video fell under the fair use umbrella.
