Wow, This New York Times Reporter Sure Likes to Yell at Brands on Twitter

People use Twitter for different reasons. Celebrities use it to self-promote, teens use it to talk about Selena Gomez, and I use it to share my own dumb thoughts with the world. New York Times tech reporter Vindu Goel, however, often uses it to interact with brands—specifically, to yell at them when he’s displeased.

Over 25 Million Accounts Stolen After Mail.ru Forums Hacked

An anonymous reader writes: Over 25 million accounts associated with forums hosted by Russian internet giant Mail.ru have been stolen by hackers. Two hackers carried out attacks on three separate game-related forums in July and August. One forum alone accounted for almost half of the breached data — a little under 13 million records; the other two forums making up over 12 million records. The databases were stolen in early August, according to breach notification site LeakedSource.com, which obtained a copy of the databases. The hackers’ names aren’t known, but used known SQL injection vulnerabilities found in older vBulletin forum software to get access to the databases. An analysis of the breached data showed that hackers took 12.8 million accounts from cfire.mail.ru; a total of 8.9 million records from parapa.mail.ru, and 3.2 million accounts from tanks.mail.ru. The hackers were able to obtain usernames, email addresses, scrambled passwords, and birthdays.

Pennywise The Clown Revealed For New Stephen King It Movie

pennywise-it-reveal.jpg

This is the first full reveal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown’s look from the upcoming Stephen King’s It movie. Pennywise will be portrayed by 26-year old Bill Skarsgård, a departure from the 44-year old Tim Curry who played him in the 1990 television miniseries. They’re also remaking Splash with Channing Tatum playing the mermaid and Jillian Bell playing Tom Hanks’ character. So, what do you think of Pennywise? I like his old-timey outfit. Still, there’s no question that is not a face you want peering back at you from a storm drain. Truthfully, I never even saw It until I couple years ago because it took me so long to get over my childhood fear of scary movies. I feel like when I was a kid laying in bed at night all I remember were the sounds of my parents playing the Horror Movie Channel. That, or our house was haunted and we lived in a neighborhood where a stabbing was the new hello. I’d say it’s 50/50.

Thanks to JD, who was really hoping for a more traditional Ronald McDonald look. Me? I was hoping he looked like Mayor McCheese.

My Bizarre, Complicated Quest To Find The World's Longest Escalator In Sleeping Dogs

The hardest part of open-world games, for me, is paying attention to the plot instead of getting distracted by all the places I can go. Recently I’ve spent about 30 hours in 2012’s Sleeping Dogs and have barely gotten out of the intro missions. I have, forever, found the world’s longest escalator system. Sort of.

The 21st Century Didn't Start Until 2001, You Dunderheads

Did you see the BBC’s new list of the 100 best movies of the 21st century, chosen by film critics from around the world? Like any movie list, scores of film geeks are tripping over themselves to declare it all wrong. David Lynch’s 2001 Hollywood fever dream Mulholland Drive took the number one spot. But honestly, the selection of movies didn’t bother me so much. The dumbest thing about this list was the fact that they included the year 2000 as being part of the 21st century. It’s shit like this that truly gets my Comic Book Guy voice cracking. Because the 21st century didn’t start until the year 2001.

The Tesla Model S P100D Accelerates Faster Than Gravity

It’s one of those numbers that I’ve got in the back of my head for no reason: 2.75 seconds. That’s how long it takes a car dropped out of a plane to accelerate to 60 miles per hour. When I saw the hilarious new Tesla Model S P100D did 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds it was a reminder that Elon’s electric sedan was now faster than gravity.

Microsoft Details Its 24-Core 'Holographic Processor'

Microsoft’s 24-core holographic processor sounds pretty impressive on paper. It will be interesting to see how well it performs under real-world usage. I don’t know about you but I am extremely excited about HoloLens and augmented reality in general.

The HoloLens’ HPU is a custom 28nm coprocessor designed by TSMC, The Register reports. The chip packs 24 Tensilica digital signal processor (DSP) cores. As opposed to more general-purpose CPU cores, DSPs are a specialized technology designed for rapidly processing data flowing in from the world—a no doubt invaluable asset while rendering augmented reality environments in real time. Microsoft’s HPU also contains roughly 65 million logic gates, 8MB of SDRAM, and 1GB of traditional DDR3 RAM. It draws less than 10W of power, and features PCIe and standard serial interfaces.

EXT4, Btrfs, XFS & NILFS2 HDD File-System Tests On Linux 4.8

Up until running the tests for today’s article, I can’t remember the last time I touched a hard drive… It’s been many months ago at least. Nearly all of our tests at Phoronix are from solid state storage, but I decided to pick up a new HDD for running some Linux file-system tests on a conventional hard drive for those not having an SSD.

NASA's Outsourced Computer People Are Even Worse Than You Might Expect

Eric berger, writing for ArsTechnica: As part of a plan to help NASA “modernize” its desktop and laptop computers, the space agency signed a $2.5 billion services contract with HP Enterprise Services in 2011. According to HP (now HPE), part of the Agency Consolidated End-User Service (ACES) program the computing company would “modernize NASA’s entire end-user infrastructure by delivering a full range of personal computing services and devices to more than 60,000 users.” HPE also said the program would “allow (NASA) employees to more easily collaborate in a secure computing environment.” The services contract, alas, hasn’t gone quite as well as one might have hoped. This week Federal News Radio reported that HPE is doing such a poor job that NASA’s chief information officer, Renee Wynn, could no longer accept the security risks associated with the contract. Wynn, therefore, did not sign off on the authority to operate (ATO) for systems and tools.A spokesperson for NASA said: “NASA continues to work with HPE to remediate vulnerabilities. As required by NASA policy, system owners must accomplish this remediation within a specified period of time. For those vulnerabilities that cannot be fully remediated within the established time frame, a Plan of Actions and Milestones (POAM) must be developed, approved, and tracked to closure.”
