These Are the Best Streaming Service Deals for Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday has grown beyond discounts on physical items you can wrap up and give away; video streaming services are jumping into the pre-holiday bargain battlefield with promotional price-cuts, “try it for free” offers, and more. It’s an extremely competitive environment for streaming entertainment providers, which makes it the perfect time for consumers to save a few bucks on their monthly entertainment expenses.

Below are the best Cyber Monday deals on streaming services, from standbys like Hulu and Max to up-and-comers like Philo.

Best Cyber Monday 2023 streaming deal: 70% off Max for 6 months

Max (formerly known as HBO Max) is offering an aggressive deal for Cyber Monday: six months of Max for $2.99 a month. That’s a 70% saving over the regular $9.99 price. This deal is only for the ad-supported version of Max, and it’s limited to new or returning customers, but three bucks a month is cheap for a top-tier streaming service. For comparison’s sake, the no-commercials version of Max is $15.99 a month. Act now, though: The last day for signing up is November 27.

Peacock: $1.99 a month for 12 months, or $19.99 for the year

NBC’s streaming provider is offering two impressive discounts for Cyber Monday: either $1.99 a month for 12 months or $19.99 for the year. The regular price is $5.99/mo or $59.99/year. This is for Peacock Premium, Peacocks’s ad-supported tier, only. The offer isn’t open to current subscribers. Use the code YEARLONG for the $19.99 a year offer or BIGDEAL for the $1.99 offer at the below link. The last day for signing up is November 27.

Hulu: $.99 a month for a year

Not to be outdone by Max, Hulu’s ad-supported tier is going on sale for $.99 a month for a year. That’s an 87% saving from the regular price. The “less than a buck” offer is only available to new or returning Hulu subscribers.

Fubo: One-week free trial and $40 savings over two months

For Cyber Monday, Fubo is working hard to court consumers in the market for a cable-TV replacement. The company is offering a $20 discount for the first two months’ subscription to all three of its programming tiers. You can also take advantage of the seven-day free trial to see if you even like Fubo.

Philo: Half-off for the first two months

I don’t know anyone who subscribes to Philo, but that just means the company is hungry. A subscription to this bare-bones live-TV streaming service is already cheaper than its competition at $25 a month, but they’re going even lower by offering a Cyber Monday price of $12.50 a month for the first two months. Philo also offers a free trial week, so you can see if you can live without sports and news.  Enter the code “BFCM23” for the discount. Don’t sleep, though: This deal runs through November 28.

YouTube Premium: Free for three months (with purchase at Best Buy)

If you like YouTube but despise YouTube’s interminable ad-breaks, this might be the Cyber Monday deal for you. If you purchase an eligible item on Best Buy’s website between now and Jan. 2, you can get three months of YouTube Premium for free. It’s only for new or returning customers, though.

Paramount Plus: $1.99 a month for three months

Paramount Plus is usually $5.99 a month, but for Cyber Monday, you’ll be able to sign up for $1.99 for three months. You can also get Paramount and Showtime for $3.99 a month for three months. Do it quick, though: The offer ends on Dec. 3.

Roku: Premium channels for Black Friday prices

If you’re a user of Roku, the company is offering a ton of channels at discounted prices for Black Friday, so whether you like AcornTV or Fox Nation, you’ll be able to lock in a lower price if you visit Roku’s site between now and November 30. (All these are two-month offers unless otherwise noted.)

Roku channels for $.99 per month

  • A&E Crime Central

  • Fox Nation

  • The Great Courses

  • HISTORY Vault

  • Lifetime Movie Club

  • MGM+

  • Noggin

  • STARZ

  • UP Faith & Family

Roku channels for $1.99 per month

  • Cinemax

  • Hallmark Movies Now

  • ViX Premium

  • Paramount+ (As low as $1.99/month for 3 months)

Roku channels for $2.99 a month

  • Acorn TV

  • ALLBLK

  • AMC+

  • Peacock ($2.99/month for 3 months for Peacock Premium)

Other Roku offers

  • BET+ ($3.99/month for 3 months)

  • Apple TV+ (3 months free)

Cyber Monday deals on streaming devices

Deals on streaming services are great and all, but they won’t be much use if you don’t have a solid device to stream stuff. Well, I have you covered there, too. Below are five great deals on streaming devices.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite: This cheap-as-chips streaming stick can be yours for the Cyber Monday price of $15.99, marked down from $29.99.

  • Chromecast with Google TV (4k): The 4K version of Google’s streaming device is on sale through Best Buy for $37.99, regular price: $49.99.

  • Roku Ultra: Roku’s top-of-the-line streaming device is selling for $69.00, down from its regular $99.99 price.

  • 2021 Apple TV 4K with 64GB Storage: Amazon’s Cyber Monday price for Apple’s streaming box is $179.95. That’s 10% less than the normal price of $199.99.

  • Tablo 2-Tuner Over-The-Air DVR: This device lets cord-cutters record what they like from their smartphones, Amazon Fire devices, Roku, Google TV, and over-the-air broadcasts, and play it back on any other device in the house. The $79.95 price is 20% off the usual $99.95 price.

Amazon has turned its Fire TV Cube streaming device into a thin client optimized for Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Amazon’s Workspaces Thin Client also supports Amazon’s Workspaces Web, for accessing virtual desktops from a browser, and AppStream.

The computer is a Fire TV Cube with a new software stack. All the hardware—from the 2GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 16GB of storage, to the Arm processor with 8 cores, including four running at up to 2.2 GHz—remain identical whether buying the device as an Alexa-powered entertainment-streaming device or thin client computer. Both the Fire TV Cube and Workspaces Thin Client run an Android Open Source Project-based Android fork (for now).

How to Take Advantage of Travel Deal Tuesday

The days after Thanksgiving are synonymous with mega deals. You know Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but the trinity is not complete without Travel Tuesday. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday get all the hype for great deals on retail items, Travel Tuesday offers some of the best discounts you’ll find all year for flights, hotels, vacation packages and more. If you’re hoping to save money on upcoming trips, here are some tips for making the most of Travel Tuesday.

How to take advantage of deals on Travel Tuesday

Do a little research first

Yes, time is of the essence. Still, it pays to do your research in advance. Decide where you might want to go on your next vacation and have a few destinations in mind. Sign up for email alerts from airlines, hotels, and travel booking sites to get notices about upcoming sales. This will help you jump on the best deals quickly when they go live on Tuesday.

Be flexible with travel dates and destinations

The best Travel Tuesday discounts are likely to be for off-peak travel times when demand is lower. Being flexible with your dates and travel destinations will open up more money-saving opportunities. January through March tend to be the cheapest months for Caribbean getaways, for example. Trying open-jaw routing for flights or exploring nearby alternative cities can also help you save.

Use fare comparison tools

Don’t simply rely on one travel provider for deals. Comparison shop between airline websites, Expedia, Priceline, and more on Travel Tuesday to make sure you’re finding the best offers. Discounts can vary greatly from one site to the next, even when researching the exact same trip. Set price drop alerts and pounce when you see a fare that meets your budget. I recommend this Chrome extension that searches every airline booking site for the cheapest flights.

Consider package deals

Online travel agencies often offer additional Travel Tuesday price drops when you bundle your flights and hotel. Compared to booking these travel components separately, packages can offer substantial savings. So keep your eye out for bundle deals that provide upgraded accommodations, free Wi-Fi, spa credits and other perks.

Use travel rewards

Quit hoarding your travel points. If you have points from credit card reward programs sitting around, check to see if they can be transferred to your airline partner of choice. When you want to redeem your transferable credit card points on flights, you can purchase them through the travel site specific to the bank (like Amex Travel), or you can transfer your points directly into your frequent flyer program and book flights based on that program’s award rates.

With advance planning and smart strategy, Travel Tuesday makes booking your next vacation much more affordable. For more, check out Lifehacker’s resident deals expert Daniel Oropeza’s favorite websites for all the best travel deals.

The latest advertiser fallout on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, could end up costing Elon Musk’s company much more than the $11 million in revenue that the company previously estimated could be “at risk” due to backlash over antisemitic content on X.

According to internal X sales team documents reviewed by The New York Times, X may lose “up to $75 million” as more than 100 major brands—including Airbnb, Amazon, Coca-Cola, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, and Uber—have stopped advertising, while “dozens” more are considering pausing ads on the platform.

These sales team documents, The Times reported, “are meant to track the impact of all the advertising lapses” in November. On top of noting which brands have stopped advertising, the documents also flag brands at risk of halting ads. Ultimately, the sales team’s goal is listing “how much ad revenue X employees fear the company could lose through the end of the year if advertisers do not return,” The Times reported.

Plex Users Fear New Feature Will Leak Porn Habits To Their Friends and Family

Many Plex users were alarmed when they got a “week in review” email last week that showed them what they and their friends had watched on the popular media server software. From a report: Some users are saying that their friends’ softcore porn habits are being revealed to them with the feature, while others are horrified by the potentially invasive nature feature more broadly. Plex is a hybrid streaming service/self-hosted media server. In addition to offering content that Plex itself has licensed, the service allows users to essentially roll their own streaming service by making locally downloaded files available to stream over the internet to devices the server admin owns. You can also “friend” people on Plex and give them access to your own server.

A new feature, called “Discover Together,” expands social aspects of Plex and introduces an “Activity” tab: “See what your friends have watched, rated, added to their Watchlist, or shared with you,” Plex notes. It also shares this activity in a “week in review” email that it sent to Plex users and people who have access to their servers.

Tesla sues Sweden for blocking license plate deliveries during labor strike

Tesla sued Sweden’s transportation agency and postal service on Monday over a union strike blocking the company’s license plate deliveries in the country. The workers are striking to demand the non-unionized automaker sign a collective bargaining agreement, a standard practice that mechanics’ union IF Metall describes as “the backbone of the Swedish model.” However, the Swedish Transport Agency says it already received an interim decision from a district court ordering it to consent within seven days to Tesla’s request to collect license plates or face hefty fines. The agency says it’s too early to say what exactly that means for the standoff.

The Associated Press reported Monday that Tesla, which delivered over 9,000 EVs to Swedish customers in 2022, described the actions of The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) as a “unique attack” on the US company. Tesla’s lawsuit reportedly urges a district court to fine the Swedish Transport Agency 1 million kronor (US$95,803) while allowing Tesla to “retrieve license plates.” The registrations are held up because workers at state-owned postal service PostNord stopped supplying the plates to Tesla after its workers joined the strike.

The lawsuit allegedly claims the Swedish Transport Agency refused the automaker’s request to pick up the license plates itself or, failing that, send them through a different channel. Reuters reports Tesla filed two lawsuits: one against the Swedish Transport Agency and another against PostNord.

In a statement to Engadget, Swedish Transport Agency spokesperson Ann-Sofie Masth confirmed the lawsuit and revealed the court’s interim decision. “The Swedish Transport Agency has now received an interim decision from the Norrköping district court to consent within 7 days to Tesla collecting license plates directly from our sign manufacturer. It appears from the decision that our sign manufacturer has announced that it is prepared to provide the signs directly to Tesla, provided that the Swedish Transport Agency agrees to this. We at the Swedish Transport Agency now need to analyze the announcement and assess what consequences this has for us and what measures might need to be taken to implement the decision. It is currently too early to say exactly what that would mean.”

Tesla, not exactly a union-friendly company, has a policy against signing collective bargaining agreements, claiming its employees already have equal or better terms than what the union proposed. The argument that it takes good enough care of its employees to void the need for a union echoes one Tesla CEO Elon Musk made in 2017 when accused of allegations of poor working conditions and low pay at the company’s Fremont, CA factory.

IF Metall, Sweden’s most prominent manufacturing union, began striking on October 27. Although Tesla doesn’t have a manufacturing plant in the country, it has several service centers, which stopped working on Tesla vehicles after going on strike. Other unions in the Nordic nation, including dockworkers, cleaners and electricians, have joined the strike in an act of unity. A component maker joined the unions on Friday in a sympathy action.

In Tesla’s court filing, the company reportedly described the decision as “a unique attack on a company operating in Sweden,” claiming the refusal to deliver the license plates would affect “a large number of consumers who ordered a new car from Tesla.”

In a statement to The AP, an IF Metall representative said, “We are doing this for the sake of our members, to ensure that they have safe working conditions.” A Swedish Transportation Agency spokesperson reportedly told Reuters, “We at the Swedish Transport Agency do not share this view and therefore Tesla has decided to have the issue tested in court, which is their right.”

Google says bumpy Pixel 8 screens are nothing to worry about

Pixel phones always seem to ship with some bizarre hardware malady, and this year it’s that not all the parts fit inside the phone quite right. Some users are reporting “bumpy” screens on their Pixel 8 and 8 Pros. The bumps aren’t in the top surface, which is still smooth glass, but in the OLED display under the glass, which can show raised, usually circular bumps. It looks like components inside the phone are pressing up against the back of the OLED display, resulting in visible bumps under the right lighting conditions. Google gave a statement about the issue to 9to5Google and says it’s nothing to worry about.

Pixel 8 phones have a new display. When the screen is turned off, not in use and in specific lighting conditions, some users may see impressions from components in the device that look like small bumps. There is no functional impact to Pixel 8 performance or durability.

That’s certainly an interesting take. All phones come with “new” displays, so what exactly does that first sentence mean? The bumps definitely aren’t on every Pixel 8, and even the bumpy displays aren’t noticeable in normal usage. The pictures and videos out there all involve people shining flashlights into a turned-off display, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s just worrying to have the delicate OLED panel be dented by internal components. Is this going to be ok long-term? Does this make the glass or OLED panel more susceptible to breaking after a shock? It’s certainly not normal phone construction.

Match up anyone’s pockmark video with a teardown and you’ll usually be able to spot the offending item. It’s usually screw heads, spring clips designed to ground some component to the display copper, or the corners of some other component poking through. No one item accounts for every pockmark, so the components seem just a little too close to the display on some models. YouTuber JerryRigEverything actually took apart a Pixel 8 Pro that had a bumpy screen. It wasn’t noted in the video, but freeze-frame it and you’ll see some pretty alarming indents in the copper sheet on the back of the display that you can try to match up to the other half of the phone. They are almost puncture marks!

Cyber Monday deal brings the Xbox Series X down to a record low of $400 on Amazon

There are tons of great gaming deals floating around this Cyber Monday but few are better than one we’ve spotted for the Xbox Series X. After you apply a $49 coupon at Amazon, Microsoft’s most powerful gaming console is available for $400. That’s a record low price for the system — you could even put the savings toward a few months of Game Pass access. You’ll probably need to act quickly if you’re interested, though. There’s no telling when this deal will vanish.

Along with the PlayStation 5 (which has its own Cyber Monday Deals), the Xbox Series X is your top choice for a current game console. There are a few factors to consider when buying a gaming system. If you need something more portable, a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck is the way to go. If you prefer Sony’s formula of polished single-player adventures like The Last of Us or Spider-Man, the PlayStation 5 is likely your best option. Still, it’s hard to beat the combination of power, 4K gaming, game library and price that the Xbox Series X offers.

The value of an Xbox Series X gets even better if you have an Xbox Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Xbox Game Pass ($11 per month) grants you access to a vast library of games on your console, including third-party titles. You’ll be able to play every first-party game at no extra cost on its release day too. Game Pass Ultimate ($17 per month) adds online multiplayer and access to the PC Game Pass library, Xbox Cloud Gaming and EA Play (i.e. an extra batch of games from that publisher).

Xbox Game Pass includes hundreds of titles from major first-party games like the Halo series, Starfield, Minecraft, Doom Eternal and Forza Horizon 5 to stellar indies such as Hollow Knight, Jusant, Celeste and Cocoon. There are plenty of big-time third-party games available through the subscription too, including Assassin’s Creed Origins, Mortal Kombat 11, Madden NFL 23 and Grand Theft Auto V.

Best of all, you won’t need to wait for those to download to your Xbox Series X if you have a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. You can check many of them out via cloud streaming to decide whether it’s worth downloading them.

Researchers figure out how to bypass the fingerprint readers in most Windows PCs

Since Windows 10 introduced Windows Hello back in 2015, most Windows laptops and tablets have shipped with some kind of biometric authentication device installed. Sometimes that means a face- or iris-scanning infrared webcam; sometimes it means a fingerprint sensor mounted on the power button or elsewhere on the device.

While these authentication methods are convenient, they aren’t totally immune to security exploits. In 2021, researchers were able to fool some Windows Hello IR webcams with infrared images of users’ faces. And last week, researchers at Blackwing Intelligence published an extensive document showing how they had managed to work around some of the most popular fingerprint sensors used in Windows PCs.

Security researchers Jesse D’Aguanno and Timo Teräs write that, with varying degrees of reverse-engineering and using some external hardware, they were able to fool the Goodix fingerprint sensor in a Dell Inspiron 15, the Synaptic sensor in a Lenovo ThinkPad T14, and the ELAN sensor in one of Microsoft’s own Surface Pro Type Covers. These are just three laptop models from the wide universe of PCs, but one of these three companies usually does make the fingerprint sensor in every laptop we’ve reviewed in the last few years. It’s likely that most Windows PCs with fingerprint readers will be vulnerable to similar exploits.

Evernote is reportedly testing a severely restricted plan for free users

Evernote is experimenting with severe restrictions to its free plan, which may nudge users to upgrade or quit the app entirely. According to a report from TechCrunch, some Evernote users were greeted with a pop-up message announcing that the free plan would be limited to a single notebook and 50 notes. The pop-up also introduced a “special 40 percent off” offer, encouraging users to upgrade to a paid plan to create notes and notebooks without limits.

But despite the in-app notification, Evernote’s website has no mention of changes coming to its free plan. A representative for the company explained to TechCrunch that the website had not been updated because the change was not yet final. The company confirmed it has been testing the limited plan with less than 1 percent of its free users. Based on how that goes, Evernote will determine whether to implement the new plan. If that does happen, the representative said the company would then communicate the changes to “the relevant customer touch-points.”

The limited version of the free plan would not prevent users from managing, editing or deleting their current notes. It would only take away the ability to create new notes unless users took the plunge and paid for their plan.

For years, Evernote was the go-to app for countless power users and productivity gurus. However, the app has been kind of on a downward slide for a while. In 2020, it appeared Evernote was trying to reclaim its crown with the release of a major cross-platform redesign. But the updates weren’t enough to revive the app, which was once valued at almost a billion dollars. Last November, Evernote was purchased by a Milan-based company called Bending Spoons, which went on to lay off 129 staffers. Bending Spoons later announced it would be abandoning most of its US operations, shifting Evernote development to Europe.

If implemented, this would be a dramatic change for die-hard Evernote fans who have stuck with the free plan for lightweight note-taking purposes. The change would make the free plan basically useless, and there would be no compelling reason to use Evernote over something free and more powerful like Apple and Google’s own note-taking apps.

These Are the Best Cyber Monday Deals on Self-care Tools

Around this time of year, you shop for gifts for everyone else, but don’t forget about yourself this Cyber Monday. Shopping holidays should always include some splurges—sorry, “self-care”—for the shopper in question. These self-care deals are left over from Black Friday, but if you spent all weekend focusing on everybody else, you still have time to snap up some goods for yourself.

Cyber Monday deals on hair tools

The wide world of haircare has only gotten wider lately, with fancy doodads and gadgets that our foremothers could only dream of when they were using literal irons to straighten their tresses. These things are pricey, though, so Cyber Monday is a great time to stock up.

  • The Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler is on sale at Nordstrom for $499.99, down from $599.99. This is the latest version, which includes longer curling barrels and a smoothing dryer attachment. If you’ve been on the fence about an Airwrap, today could be the day to just go for it. Trust me, it works.

  • The L’Ange Hair 2-in-1 titanium blow dryer brush is on sale on Amazon for $53.40, down from $119. These things effortlessly dry hair while volumizing and smoothing, giving you a fresh, blown-out look after a wash.

  • A Chi titanium flat iron is $65.99 at Ulta (down from $109.99), so Cyber Monday is a fabulous day to pick up a classic tool that has withstood the test of time. If your mom never let you get the Chi in middle school and made you make do with a less expensive (and less effective) economy brand, this is your big moment.

Cyber Monday deals on skincare tools

Skincare is another element of self care that you can do on the cheap, but it just feels better when you use the higher-quality products. These tools are on sale for the big day, which is good news, since they usually cost a significant chunk of cash.
