This underwater camera operates wirelessly without batteries

MIT engineers have built a wireless, battery-free underwater camera, capable of harvesting energy by itself while consuming very little power, according to a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications. The system can take color photos of remote submerged objects—even in dark settings— and convey the data wirelessly for real-time monitoring of underwater environments, aiding the discovery of new rare species or monitoring ocean currents, pollution, or commercial and military operations.

We already have various methods of taking underwater images, but according to the authors, “Most of the ocean and marine organisms have not been observed yet.” That’s partly because most existing methods require being tethered to ships, underwater drones, or power plants for both power and communication. Those methods that don’t use tethering must incorporate battery power, which limits their lifetime. While it’s possible in principle to harvest energy from ocean waves, underwater currents, or even sunlight, adding the necessary equipment to do so would result in a much bulkier and more expensive underwater camera.

So the MIT team set about developing a solution for a battery-free, wireless imaging method. The design goal was to minimize the hardware required as much as possible. Since they wanted to keep power consumption to a minimum,  for instance, the MIT team used cheap off-the-shelf imaging sensors. The trade-off is that such sensors only produce grayscale images. The team also needed to develop a low-power flash as well, since most underwater environments don’t get much natural light.

Numerous orgs hacked after installing weaponized open source apps

Hackers backed by the North Korean government are weaponizing well-known pieces of open source software in an ongoing campaign that has already succeeded in compromising “numerous” organizations in the media, defense and aerospace, and IT services industries, Microsoft said on Thursday.

ZINC—Microsoft’s name for a threat actor group also called Lazarus, which is best known for conducting the devastating 2014 compromise of Sony Pictures Entertainment—has been lacing PuTTY and other legitimate open source applications with highly encrypted code that ultimately installs espionage malware.

The hackers then pose as job recruiters and connect with individuals of targeted organizations over LinkedIn. After developing a level of trust over a series of conversations and eventually moving them to the WhatsApp messenger, the hackers instruct the individuals to install the apps, which infect the employees’ work environments.

UN Elects First Female Tech Agency Secretary-General

An anonymous reader quotes a report from the BBC: Doreen Bogdan-Martin has become the first woman to be elected as secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ITU is the main technology agency within the UN. Originally founded in 1865 to manage the first international telegraph networks, the ITU now has an important role in facilitating the use of radio, satellite and the internet. Ms Bogdan-Martin beat her Russian rival Rashid Ismailov by 139 votes to 25. The American will succeed Houlin Zhao, who has been in the role since 2014, when her term begins on January 1, 2023. She will be taking the reins of the oldest UN agency, which is responsible for many facets of international communications. These include assigning satellite orbits globally, co-ordinating technical standards, and improving infrastructure in the developing world. There had been concerns ahead of the election because Ms Bogdan-Martin’s opponent had previously called for international regulation of the internet.

In her previous role as director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Development bureau, Ms Bogdan-Martin’s remit included job creation, digital skills development, diversity, and gender equality. Her candidacy for the top job was endorsed by US President Joe Biden, who said she had the “integrity, experience, and vision necessary to transform the digital landscape.” “She understands the importance of connecting every school to the internet and making sure every student can access virtual learning, providing women and girls the digital tools they need to succeed, and extending the benefits of online health and educational resources,” he said in a statement. “Whether it’s today’s children or our children’s children, we need to provide them with a strong and stable foundation for growth,” Ms Bogdan-Martin said following her win. “The world is facing significant challenges — escalating conflicts, a climate crisis, food security, gender inequalities, and 2.7 billion people with no access to the internet.”

Ex-eBay Execs Heading To Prison For Harassing Couple Behind Newsletter

Two former eBay security executives were sentenced to prison on Thursday for carrying out a campaign to harass and intimidate a Massachusetts couple through threats and disturbing home deliveries after their online newsletter drew the ire of the company’s then-CEO. From a report: Jim Baugh and David Harville were sentenced to 57 and 24 months in prison, respectively, for their roles in an extensive harassment campaign that involved sending the couple cockroaches, a funeral wreath and a bloody Halloween pig mask. U.S. District Judge Patti Saris, who imposed the sentenced during hearings in Boston, called it a “hard-to-imagine” scheme fueled by a “toxic culture” at the Silicon Valley e-commerce company. “It was extreme and outrageous,” Saris said. She ordered Baugh, eBay’s former senior director of safety and security, and Harville, its former director of global resiliency, to also pay fines of $40,000 and $20,000, respectively, after pleading guilty to cyberstalking-related charges.

Obsidian's Big Survival Game Turns The Smallest Things Into Your Biggest Terrors

It’s dark out, and I’m scared. I’m hiding behind a small chest and a rock. Around me are a few flimsy walls made of leaves. Outside those walls, I can hear it: a giant, angry spider. I can’t spot it directly, but I can see the massive leaves and tall blades of grass surrounding my tiny shelter moving as it looks for…

Intel claims its Arc A770 and A750 GPUs will outperform NVIDIA's mid-range RTX 3060

Ahead of bringing its Arc desktop GPUs to everyone in a couple of weeks, Intel has revealed more details about what to expect from the graphics cards in terms of specs and performance. The A770, which starts at $329, will have 32 Xe cores, 32 ray-tracing units and a 2,100MHz graphics clock. In terms of RAM, it comes in 8GB and 16GB configurations, with up to 512 Gb/s and 560 Gb/s of memory bandwidth, respectively.

As for the A750, which Intel just announced will start at $289, that has 28 Xe cores, 28 ray-tracing units, a 2,050MHz graphics clock, 8GB of memory and up to 512 Gb/s of memory bandwidth. All three cards, which will be available on October 12th, have 225W of total power.

Intel claims that, based on benchmarking tests, you’ll get more bang for your buck with these cards than NVIDIA’s mid-range GeForce RTX 3060. It says the A770 offers 42 percent greater performance per dollar vs. the RTX 3060, while the A750 is seemingly 53 percent better on a per-dollar basis.

It claims that, in most of the games it tested, the A770’s 16GB configuration delivered better ray-tracing performance than the similarly priced RTX 3060 (which, in fairness, debuted back in early 2021). When it came to Fortnite, Intel says the A770 had 1.56 times the ray-tracing performance of the RTX 3060.

Of course Intel is going to tout its GPUs as being better than the competition. We’ll have to wait for the results of our own Intel Arc benchmarking tests to have a true sense of the performance.

In any case, it’s looking like NVIDIA is about to have more competition on the GPU front. Only this time, it’s from an established brand that just so happens to be behind many of the processors powering the PCs that might very well have used NVIDIA cards otherwise.
