Samsung No-showed On Its Major Exynos 2200 Launch

ArsTechnica: So here’s a crazy story. Samsung was supposed to have a big SoC launch on Tuesday, but that launch did not happen. Samsung didn’t cancel or delay the event. The January 11 date was announced, but when the time for the event came, nothing happened! Samsung pulled a no-call no-show for a major product launch. […] The Exynos 2200 was (?) shaping up to be a major launch for Samsung. It is, after all, the first Samsung SoC with the headline-grabbing feature of having an AMD GPU. The two companies announced this deal a year ago, and we’ve been giddy about it ever since. The Exynos 2200 is (or was) going to debut in the Galaxy S22. That launch event is currently scheduled for February 8, assuming Samsung doesn’t ghost everyone again.

Teen hacker finds bug that lets him control 25+ Teslas remotely

A young hacker and IT security researcher found a way to remotely interact with more than 25 Tesla electric vehicles in 13 countries, according to a Twitter thread he posted yesterday.

David Colombo explained in the thread that the flaw was “not a vulnerability in Tesla’s infrastructure. It’s the owner’s faults[sic].” He claimed to be able to disable a car’s remote camera system, unlock doors and open windows, and even begin keyless driving. He could also determine the car’s exact location.

However, Colombo clarified that he could not actually interact with any of the Teslas’ steering, throttle, or brakes, so at least we don’t have to worry about an army of remote-controlled EVs doing a Fate of the Furious reenactment.

App Dev Who Shamelessly Ripped Off Wordle Brags On Twitter And Is Viciously Roasted
Apple gets the last word when it comes to clones of the popular Wordle game that popped up in its App Store recently. One brazen dev, that even copied the name of the game, bragged on Twitter about how many downloads his cloned app was getting in Apple’s App Store. As you might imagine, the reaction to his boasting was less than enthusiastic.

26 New TV Series Everyone Will Watch This Year

Look, let’s be real: Pandemic notwithstanding, we’re not going to the movies like we used to. A lot of the kinds of dramas we used to buy tickets for have migrated to TV and expanded in scope, and as a result, TV’s gotten…pretty good. This year’s slate of new movies is enticing, but we’ll probably be fine if we sit…

Canon forced to ship 'knockoff' ink cartridges due to chip shortage

Printer makers have long used chips to thwart third-party ink cartridge sales and drive you toward their own products, but they’re now feeling the sting of those restrictions. The Register and USA Today note Canon has had to ship toner cartridges without copy protection chips due to ongoing shortages. That, in turn, has led to some ImageRunner multifunction printers incorrectly flagging official cartridges as knockoffs — Canon has even told printer owners how to bypass the warnings and deal with broken toner level detection.

We’ve asked Canon for comment. Some users said they’ve encountered similar issues with HP printers, but that company wouldn’t directly confirm or deny the problems in a statement to The Register. Instead, HP said it was using a “globally diverse” supply network to stay “agile and adaptable” in the midst of chip shortages.

The printer trouble illustrates one of the common complaints about digital rights management (DRM) and other copy protection systems: they create trouble the moment their designers can’t offer full support. Just ask people who bought music tied to Microsoft’s PlaysForSure, for example. It’s doubtful Canon, HP or others will drop their DRM chips any time soon, but this incident won’t exactly help their case.

Dutch Athletes Warned To Keep Phones and Laptops Out of China

schwit1 shares a report: Dutch athletes competing in next month’s Beijing Winter Olympics will need to leave their phones and laptops at home in an unprecedented move to avoid Chinese espionage, Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant reported on Tuesday. The urgent advice to athletes and supporting staff to not bring any personal devices to China was part of a set of measures proposed by the Dutch Olympic Committee (NOCNSF) to deal with any possible interference by Chinese state agents, the paper said citing sources close to the matter. NOCNSF spokesman Geert Slot said cybersecurity was part of the risk assessment made for the trip to China, but declined to comment on any specific measure. “The importance of cybersecurity of course has grown over the years”, Slot said. “But China has completely closed off its internet, which makes it a specific case.”

'S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2' is delayed until December 8th

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fans will need to wait several more months than expected to get their hands on the latest game in the series. Developer GSC Game World has pushed back the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl release date from April 28th to December 8th.

“These additional seven months of development are needed to fulfill our vision and achieve the desired state of the game,” GSC Game World wrote in a statement. “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is the biggest project in the history of GSC and it requires thorough testing and polishing.” Perhaps it needs a little more time to get characters’ teeth just right.

The studio noted that, although the decision to delay the survival horror game wasn’t an easy one, it believes “development should take as long as necessary, especially in the case of such a project.” It plans to provide more details about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in the coming months.

The first-person shooter, which will be the first entry in the series since 2009, will initially be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC — it’ll debut on Xbox Game Pass. Reports suggest Microsoft has a three-month exclusivity window for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

GSC Game World recently came under fire over its plan to include NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in the game. Just one day later, the studio said it would “cancel anything NFT-related in S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 following a major backlash.

Micron Ships First 176-Layer QLC NAND SSD And It's The World's Tiniest 2TB NVMe Model
You might own a 2TB solid state drive (SSD) with an NVMe interface, but not one as tiny as Micron’s new 2400 model in the 22x30mm (M.2 2230) form factor. It is the smallest 2TB NVMe SSD ever made, and it is the direct result of Micron having begun volume shipments of the industry’s first 176-layer quad-level cell (QLC) NAND flash memory.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Promises Performance Boost for All Raspberry Pi 4 Devices

Ubuntu Desktop on Raspberry Pi arrived officially with the Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) release, but it was only recommended for the Raspberry Pi 4 models with 4GB or 8GB RAM, Raspberry Pi 400, as well as Raspberry Pi CM4 (Compute Module 4).

Well, that’s about to change as Canonical wants to make Ubuntu Desktop work smoothly on the Raspberry Pi 4 model with 2GB of RAM, and the secret to this performance boost is to enable the zswap feature in the Linux kernel.

God of War on PC delivers nearly everything we’d hoped for

While headlines have suggested that Sony’s PlayStation division is more invested in the PC gaming space than ever before, its track record of releases thus far has been a bit shaky, even if the future looks promising. Sony’s combined PC-porting studios stumbled in mid-2020 with Horizon: Zero Dawn, although the company eventually massaged that game into decent shape months later. Meanwhile, Days Gone arrived in 2021 with a solid number of PC-specific bells and whistles. That’s only two bona fide PlayStation “hits” on PC thus far, leaving plenty of popular series missing.

Sony continues its PC-porting streak in 2022 by announcing two more titles. The first, 2018’s God of War reboot, is emblematic of the company’s PS4-game-porting aspirations. (Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, coming later this year, is the second.) Sony Santa Monica provided preview code for God of War‘s PC port a full four weeks before the game’s $49.99 launch this Friday on Steam, the Epic Games StoreHumble, and other PC gaming storefronts. Based on what I’ve tested thus far, that level of confidence is warranted.

Tiding PC players over before the non-PC Ragnarök

God of War official PC port trailer.

Before digging into God of War‘s PC specifics (and my recommendations for settings and toggles), let’s recap why I care about a port of a four-year-old PS4 game. When the God of War reboot arrived in 2018, the series’ original run had accumulated a mix of baggage and fatigue that cooled my initial expectations. It didn’t take long for Sony Santa Monica’s gorgeous, massive, emotional adventure to change my tune, and the game finished third on Ars’ 2018 best-of list.
