SEC Charges App Annie With Securities Fraud in $10 Million Settlement

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced Tuesday that it’s charging App Annie, the mobile app data provider, with securities fraud, accusing the company of “engaging in deceptive practices” and misrepresenting the origins of its data. From a report: App Annie will pay a $10 million settlement, according to the announcement, although the company has not admitted to any of the SEC’s findings. According to the SEC, the company, which sells estimates on app downloads, usage and revenue, assured app businesses that the performance data they shared with App Annie would only be used in an anonymized way and run through an algorithm to generate performance estimates. But the SEC accuses App Annie and its former CEO and Chairman Bertrand Schmitt of reneging on that promise and using actual performance data to tweak its estimate models between 2014 and 2018. Then, the SEC alleges, the company sold that confidential data to trading firms, and misled those customers into thinking that the data was compliant with federal securities laws.

SkyDrive Signs Flying Car Pact with Osaka

Akihabara News (Tokyo) — SkyDrive has gained top level political support in Osaka for its ambition to develop the eVTOL industry in Japan, using the heart of the Kansai region as its main base.

On Tuesday, the Japanese eVTOL startup signed an agreement with Osaka that featured the personal attendance of Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura and Mayor Ichiro Matsui, signaling the importance which they place on this initiative.

“The realization of ‘flying cars’ will not only shorten travel times and improve convenience, but also solve various administrative issues, such as transportation in the event of a disaster and utilization as a tourism resource,” declared Mayor Matsui. “Facing Osaka Bay, where many industries are concentrated, Osaka has enough area to realize ‘flying cars’ and develop it as a new industry. We hope that this cooperation agreement will further accelerate the efforts to realize the flights of ‘flying cars’ at the 2025 World Expo and commercialize them, leading to the creation of innovative new industries in Osaka.”

SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa added, “We have been continuously discussing the implementation of flying cars with Osaka, but this agreement has brought us one step closer to the realization of practical applications… Osaka has a geography that connects the airport and the bay area with urban areas via the sea and rivers, making it an ideal place to launch air mobility in Japan.”

Most of the agreement relates to the exchange of information and promotional activities for the eVTOL industry.

In November 2020, the Osaka Roundtable on a Moving Revolution Society in the Sky was launched, with the inaugural members being Osaka Prefecture and 41 private companies and organizations. No other Japanese local government has been so proactive in its support for the development of the eVTOL industry.

In a related initiative, SkyDrive is collaborating with Obayashi Corporation, Kansai Electric Power Company, Kintetsu Group Holdings, and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance on an air taxi business feasibility survey in the Osaka Bay area, with results expected to be delivered in the coming months.

Millions With Eye Conditions at Higher Risk of Dementia, Shows Research

Millions of people with eye conditions including age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetes-related eye disease have an increased risk of developing dementia, new research shows. From a report: Vision impairment can be one of the first signs of the disease, which is predicted to affect more than 130 million people worldwide by 2050. Previous research has suggested there could be a link between eye conditions that cause vision impairment, and cognitive impairment. However, the incidence of these conditions increases with age, as do systemic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression and stroke, which are all accepted risk factors for dementia. That meant it was unclear whether eye conditions were linked with a higher incidence of dementia independently of systemic conditions.

Now researchers have found that age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetes-related eye disease are independently associated with increased risk of dementia, according to a new study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. The research examined data from 12,364 British adults aged 55 to 73, who were taking part in the UK Biobank study. They were assessed in 2006 and again in 2010 with their health information tracked until early 2021.

Globally, climate change drives a willingness to change lifestyles

This year has seen a huge number of climate-related disasters, from hurricanes to drought and from fires to floods. In the middle of the chaos, the IPCC dropped the first installment of its latest climate report, mapping out how our current choices will shape the planet’s future. All of this would seem to make now a great time to check in on public views of climate change.

Unfortunately, one of the best sources of such check-ins, the Pew Research Center, did its most recent polling on the topic way back in February. The survey of industrialized economies shows a strong and growing worry that climate change will affect people personally and a willingness to make changes to avoid the worst of its impacts. Still, because of the timing, it’s likely that opinion has shifted even further since.

Around the world

Pew surveyed people in 17 different industrialized economies in North America, Europe, and around the Pacific Rim. Obviously left out are the developing economies, which may have the most impact on the trajectory of the future climate, as well as China. But the survey does provide some perspective on public opinion in the countries that are actively pursuing policies intended to address their carbon emissions.

You can finally upgrade PS5’s SSD storage as of tomorrow

A major new update to the PS5 firmware lets players upgrade the console's internal storage via an M.2 SSD.

Enlarge / A major new update to the PS5 firmware lets players upgrade the console’s internal storage via an M.2 SSD.

Players will be able to add specific M.2 SSDs to the PS5 with a new system update rolling out tomorrow, two months after a beta that featured the option was made available to users who signed up.

As detailed in a post on the PlayStation Blog, the update gives users the option to increase the PS5’s overall storage capacity by installing a PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD (ranging from 250GB to 4TB) that fits certain technical and dimensional requirements. Once the M.2 drive is installed, the new storage space can be used to copy, download, update, and play PS4 and PS5 games as well as media applications. The result will essentially add a second, fully functional internal drive to the console.

This is a big step up over the “cold-storage” solution that was added to the system in April, which allowed last-gen games to run straight from a standard platter-based external hard drive or SSD via USB—and notably kept players from doing the same for PS5 games. As a result, the feature did little more than let players free up space for PS5 games by storing PS4 games on an external drive… or just letting PS5 downloads collect dust in storage, which Sony said still allowed for faster transfers back to internal storage than just redownloading from scratch. For PS5 players, this did little to alleviate problems with the console’s internal 667 GB of available space.

Twitter Reopens Its Account Verification Process After Another Pause

Twitter has again restarted its account verification process, the company said on Monday. TechCrunch reports: Since launching the revamped verification program this spring, Twitter had hit a few snags which have forced it to shut down verifications more than once. The most recent of these pauses was announced on August 13, when the company said it need to make improvements to both the application and review process. […] Now, Twitter says users who are looking to be verified should keep checking their account settings screen for access to the in-app application. It didn’t detail what, specifically had changed — but hopefully the system will now remain open for good.

Xiaomi shows off smart glasses with an all-green, microLED, waveguide display

Xiaomi—the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer—would like to briefly divert your tech attention away from the iPhone 13 launch to a new pair of AR goggles called “Xiaomi Smart Glasses.” The company calls this a “concept” device, but previous Xiaomi “concept” devices have turned into real, for-sale products. There’s no release date or price point yet, but it looks like it’s a working device. Xiaomi’s feet are firmly on the ground, and there isn’t much about the product that hasn’t been done before by Google Glass or Snapchat Spectacles.

The Smart Glasses look like a slightly bulky pair of prescription eyeglasses, with a 5MP camera in one corner and the display system in the other. The display system is wild—a microLED display fires into a series of lenses and then into a waveguide lens for the right eye only. Cramming a microLED into a pair of glasses apparently wasn’t easy—Xiaomi says the chip measures 2.4 mm x 2.02 mm, with individual pixels sized at 4 μm. The big compromise is that the microLED system is actually monochrome: the glasses can only display green, so you’ll feel right at home if you ever used a computer in the 1980s.

The biggest AR glasses product on the market is Snapchat Spectacles, and those take a more advanced approach to vision, with two full-color waveguide lenses. Xiaomi is pushing the envelope with microLED, while Snapchat appears to be using tiny DLP projectors that project into the waveguides. Snapchat was so impressed with its display supplier that it decided to buy the company—called “WaveOptics”—in March for $500 million.

Rivian starts building R1T electric trucks for customers

At the start of the month, Rivian achieved a major milestone. The Environmental Protection Agency published official range estimates for the company’s R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, putting both vehicles one step closer to an official launch. Rivian has now hit another important milestone.

In a tweet spotted by Roadshow, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe announced on Tuesday that the company produced its first R1T EV for a customer. “After months of building pre-production vehicles, this morning our first customer vehicle drove off our production line in Normal,” Scaringe wrote on Twitter. “Can’t wait to get these into the hands of our customers!”

Getting to this point has been something of a journey for Rivian. The company had initially planned to start deliveries of the R1T in 2020 but was forced to delay the truck’s debut to 2021 when it couldn’t get its manufacturing facility, a former Mitsubishi plant, retooled quickly enough. The coronavirus pandemic only added to the automaker’s problems, forcing it to push bach the launch of the R1T and R1S from July to September. “Everything from facility construction, to equipment installation, to vehicle component supply (especially semiconductors) has been impacted by the pandemic,” Scaringe wrote at the time.

But even with you factor in those setbacks, the R1T is making its way to consumers before the Tesla Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Lightning. Both of those vehicles won’t debut before the start of 2022.

Facebook's Own Research Shows Instagram Is Harmful To Teens, Report Says

In studies conducted over the past three years, Facebook researchers have found that Instagram is “harmful for a sizable percentage” of young users, particularly teenage girls, reported The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. CNET reports: Research presented in 2019 reportedly found that Instagram makes body image issue worse for one in three teen girls. Teens also said Instagram increased rates of anxiety and depression, reported the Journal, citing internal company documents. On Tuesday, Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, said it stands by its research to understand young people’s experiences on the app. “The question on many people’s minds is if social media is good or bad for people,” wrote Karina Newton, head of public policy at Instagram, in a blog post. “The research on this is mixed; it can be both. At Instagram, we look at the benefits and the risks of what we do.” Newton added that Instagram has done “extensive work around bullying, suicide and self-injury, and eating disorders” to make the app a safe place for everyone. The company is also focused on addressing negative social comparison and body image, said Newton, and is developing ways to “jump in if we see people dwelling on certain types of content.”

The Instagram research is part of a “trove of internal communications” reviewed by the Journal. On Monday, the Journal reported that Facebook exempted millions of high-profile users, including celebrities and politicians, from some or all of its community standards as part of a program called XCheck. A Facebook spokesman said the program was meant to give certain Facebook pages a “second layer of review to make sure we’ve applied our policies correctly.”
