New NASA satellite to continue half a century of changing Earth observations

A Delta rocket launched the small Earth Resources Technology Satellite in July 1972 with a simple mission: to capture multi-spectral imagery of the planet and assess changes over time.
Data from the polar-orbiting satellite proved so useful that NASA and the US Geological Survey renamed the vehicle Landsat 1 in 1975, and the organizations have since launched a succession of increasingly sophisticated “Landsat” satellites to continue observations. As a result, we now have a nearly half-century-long record of changes to the planet’s surface—from farms and forests to glaciers and urban areas.
While the data from the Landsat missions has proved invaluable, it has also been somewhat depressing. The satellites have amassed an impartial record of tropical deforestation in the Amazon, verifying the claims of environmental protection organizations. They have also cataloged increasing water scarcity in the Western United States and chronicled ice losses across the vast majority of Earth’s glaciers.

Listen to the weather change with The Sky Vane
The Sky Vane provides the soundtrack to an immersive sky-driven experience. Just lie down on the grass, gaze up at the sky, and listen to the changing soundscape through the day.

A Raspberry Pi powers the arresting structure in the middle of the circle of comfy skygazing mats in the photo above, and is connected to an array of atmospheric sensors. These sensors detect changes in light, temperature, pressure, and humidity. Then they send real-time data to the Raspberry Pi computer in order to create a dynamic soundtrack.
The Sky Vane’s creators produced a carefully written soundtrack for the experience. Raspberry Pi triggers changes to the number of musical layers, sequences, audio effects processing, and so on, based on the information the sensors read. That’s the “dynamic” bit. A huge gust of wind, for example, leads to a different musical change than the setting sun.
A portable Minirig sound system generates a seriously high-fidelity audio experience that can be heard clearly within a 25-metre radius of The Sky Vane.
Hardware
- Portable Minirigs
- Pisound, a sound card and MIDI interface specially designed for Raspberry Pi
- A Raspberry Pi, with the Pisound add-on attached, sitting inside the semi-transparent box in the bottom left of the image below
- The little thing on the breadboard is a Teensy LC
- Everything hides underneath the dome-shaped “shroom pod”, which in turn sits beneath the big sculpture

Inspiration behind the installation
The Sky Vane is the latest installation from pyka, a collective of experienced designers who create digital artefacts that enable you to explore the world of sound. Commissioned by Tin Shed Theatre Company and Our Living Levels, The Sky Vane’s big debut was at the Big Skies 2021 event in south Wales.
When they were planning this installation, the creators at pyka weren’t sure how it would go down in a post-pandemic world. They’re used to building things that bring people together, but they were mindful of people’s anxiety around shared public activities. This led to a design that promotes quiet contemplation and mindfulness whilst enjoying the freedom of the outdoors. We think it’s lovely.

Food Production on the Moon and Mars
Akihabara News (Tokyo) — Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture has joined the space race with a subsidy program for the development of food production methods on the Moon and Mars.
The ministry explains, “In order for Japan to contribute to the international community, enhance its presence, and strengthen its competitiveness, it is necessary to promote the technological development required on the Moon and Mars. One of the important factors is the technology to achieve high quality of life while securing stable food.”
The winner of the public tender offering, presumably a domestic research institute, will receive up to ¥310 million (US$2.8 million) in taxpayer funding over five years.
The government envisions a need for food sources to be developed which do not depend on deliveries from Earth. This food might be cultivated in underground bases on the Moon and Mars, perhaps including lab-grown meat made from extracted cells of animals like cows and pigs, as well as the production of foods like rice, soy beans, and produce.
The recycling of organic waste will likely be critical to these efforts.
In August, it was reported that Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) would link up with Space Foodsphere, a Tokyo-based space food research group, with the aim of creating sustainable food sources on the Moon.
JAXA plans to establish a base on the Moon in the first half of the 2030s, and ambitious startups like ispace hope to push the timeline for Moon bases as much forward as possible.

Iké Boys review: If you love kaiju so much, why not just be one?
A clip from Iké Boys, now playing at Fantastic Fest 2021.
Iké Boys, the debut feature from writer/director Eric McEver enjoying a world premiere at Fantastic Fest this week, will feel like a secret handshake to certain people who grew up in the late 1980s or the 1990s. In a prestreaming era when Saturday morning cartoons and after-school kids’ programming still meant reliable ratings, a wave of pop culture born in Japan was brought over to the US in the hope of finding a new audience. Many, many of these things became timeless hits for a generation: Power Rangers, Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon, Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon, yet another Ultraman syndication, etc.
Depending on where you grew up, getting really into any of that may have meant getting really left out of some social circles. The need to fit in at all costs, even if it means abandoning what you love or what makes you unique, is strong during childhood. But filmmaker McEver has a clear, feel-good message with Iké Boys: Be you. After all, humanity may someday need someone with a very special set of skills to save us—and those skills may involve an encyclopedic knowledge of Japanese kaiju stories.
They listen to the Flaming Lips, too
If anyone knows about hard-to-find cult anime films worth seeking out, it’s Shawn (Quinn Lord), a mild-mannered high schooler in late ’90s Oklahoma. He and his pal Vik (Ronak Gandhi) have grown up as outcasts amidst their Zack Morris-lookin’ schoolmates while consuming a steady stream of kaiju and mecha fiction. So when Shawn finally acquires a copy of once-believed-lost 1960s title Go! Great Decisive Battle at the End of the Century with Rainbows, they are watching it immediately no matter what.

Marubeni Flying Car Alliance with Vertical
Akihabara News (Tokyo) — Just days after Marubeni Corporation announced a pre-order for up to 200 eVTOL (flying cars) from UK-based Vertical Aerospace, the two firms revealed that they were forming an alliance to serve the Japan market.
The ultimate aim of the alliance is to create one of the first eVTOL taxi services in Japan. It is said that this could, for example, make possible flights between Tokyo Station and Narita Airport with only 14 minutes of flight time. This compares with the 53 minutes it currently takes between these two points via the Narita Express train service.
In the earlier stages of the alliance, it will focus on matters such as conducting market research and investigating regulatory issues with related ministries and agencies. It will also look into the issue of developing vertiports, most likely in collaboration with other business partners.
Finally, the alliance will make efforts to foster social acceptance of flying car services.
The alliance hopes that the first air taxi services might begin in Japan in 2024 or 2025.

N64 on Switch: Reading the tea-leaves on future game prospects
Enlarge / Get N(S) or get out. (credit: Nintendo / Sam Machkovech)
On Thursday, the latest Nintendo Direct presentation confirmed something most Nintendo fans had either suspected, hoped for, or predicted (based on a recent FCC “controller” tip): the N64 is finally back. Instead of a miniaturized N64, however, the company’s first dedicated 3D-rendering console is returning as part of a software suite on Nintendo Switch.
And in classic Nintendo fashion, Thursday’s announcement only told some of the story.
So far, we know that the initial selection of the NSO “Expansion Pack” will include nine N64 games, ranging from classics like Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 to niche surprises like Winback: Covert Operations. These games will require an additional fee over NSO’s standard $20/year rate, though Nintendo has not yet announced a price for this tier. The company also did confirm plans to roll out seven more N64 games at some point, particularly Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie, which hasn’t been seen on a Nintendo console since Microsoft bought the developer in 2002.
