UPS Will Use Arrival's Electric Trucks In the US, Europe

Delivery giant UPS has ordered 10,000 electrical trucks from Arrival, a technology company based in the UK. The two companies hope to deploy the trucks across Europe and North America over the next four years. Engadget reports: If everything goes well, UPS has the option to buy another 10,000 vehicles. For now, the trucks are still in a prototype phase. The current iteration is 2.7 meters tall and designed for “walk-in and walk-out” use, according to Patrick Bion, Arrival’s chief of product. The final version should have a battery pack “around about 75KWh,” he explained, and offer roughly 250 kilometers (155 miles) on a single charge. The vehicle will use CCS, a popular charging standard that cleverly combines the slower Type 2 port with two large DC pins for rapid charging. Arrival has also previously confirmed that its trucks will use BlackBerry QNX, an enterprise-focused operating system designed for cars, robots and medical equipment.

The trucks will utilize a “skateboard” underbelly that Arrival hopes will translate across to all of its future vehicles. According to Bion, this covers “everything below the floor,” including the suspension, brakes and steering. The design is flexible enough, however, that changes can be made for different customers and vehicle types. “We have the ability to change the wheelbase,” Bion explained, “to add front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. We can also change the battery pack capacity so that the customer, if they only need 150 kilometers (90 miles) per day, doesn’t have to pay for a bigger battery that could theoretically do more.” Arrival’s first UPS trucks will be built in Banbury, Oxfordshire, where it currently runs a research and development facility. The majority of the 10,000 order will be built “local to where it’s needed,” though, according to Bion. UPS also announced a pilot project with Waymo, the Alphabet subsidiary and leading operator of self-driving vehicles. “UPS will use some of Waymo’s self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans to shuttle packages between some of its stores in the Metro Phoenix area and its hub in Tempe, Arizona,” reports The Verge. “The minivans won’t be fully driverless; Waymo says it will keep trained safety drivers in the front seat to monitor operations.”

Blizzard Now Claims Full Copyright For Player-Mode 'Custom Game' Mods

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: As influential as Warcraft III was in the real-time strategy genre, the game’s most enduring legacy might be as the basis for genre-defining, fan-made custom game spin-offs like Defense of the Ancients (aka Dota) and Auto Chess in its wake. Now, Blizzard is taking steps to ensure it retains complete ownership of any such custom games that originate from its titles in the future, including those that come out of Warcraft III’s recently released Reforged update.

As noted by PC Gamer, a recent update to Blizzard’s Acceptable Use Policy expands the legal rights that custom-game makers automatically assign to Blizzard (new language highlighted in bold; old language available on The Internet Archive): “Custom Games are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard. Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby assign to Blizzard all of your rights, title, and interest in and to all Custom Games, including but not limited to any copyrights in the content of any Custom Games.” Blizzard’s claim on custom-game copyrights is important because, while it’s hard to effectively copyright the basic concept of a game, you can copyright the original characters, art, and writing associated with the game itself. “Under Blizzard’s new legal language, any similar games created from the base of Reforged would be completely controlled by Blizzard,” adds Ars. “While other developers would be able to copy the general gameplay for their own purposes, any derivative games that use the same name, art, or characters would belong to Blizzard.”

“While Blizzard doesn’t allow custom-game developers to engage in direct ‘commercial exploitation’ from their creations, those developers are allowed to accept donations to recoup the ‘time and resources’ involved in creating the game (with some restrictions). Blizzard also retains the right to ‘remove Custom Games from its systems and/or require that a Custom Game developer cease any and/or all development and distribution of a Custom Game.'”

Purell’s unproven disease-fighting claims get sanitized after FDA warning

The maker of Purell hand sanitizers is washing away some unproven marketing claims that its products reduce school absenteeism and prevent infections from germs such as Ebola, norovirus, flu, and certain drug-resistant infections.

The marketing disinfection comes after the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter to Purell’s parent company, GOJO Industries. The letter, dated January 17 and released this week, stated that the company’s claims violated federal regulations and that the agency now considers Purell hand sanitizers unapproved new drugs.

The FDA also noted that it is “unaware of any adequate and well-controlled clinical trials in the published literature that support” GOJO’s claims.

SpaceX Launches 60 New Starlink Satellites, Sticks Rocket Landing At Sea

After several weather delays, SpaceX successfully launched its fourth batch of Starlink satellites into orbit and nailed a rocket landing today. Space.com reports: A sooty Falcon 9 rocket — which made its third flight with this launch — roared to life at 9:06 a.m. EST (1406 GMT), lifting off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station here in Florida. The rocket carried 60 more Starlink satellites for SpaceX’s growing constellation, the second such launch by the company this month. The satellites all successfully deployed about an hour after liftoff.

The star of this mission, the Falcon 9 first stage dubbed B1051.3 by SpaceX, previously lofted a Crew Dragon capsule as part of the company’s uncrewed mission to the space station (Demo-1) as well as a trio of Earth-observing satellites for Canada. Following the successful launch, the rocket’s first stage gently touched down on a SpaceX’s drone ship landing platform “Of Course I Still Love You” in the Atlantic Ocean, marking the company’s 49th booster recovery. […] Today’s launch is part of SpaceX’s goal of connecting the globe with its Starlink network. Each satellite is identical, weighing in at roughly 485 lbs. (220 kg), and is part of a larger network that aims to provide internet coverage to the world below. With this launch, it brings SpaceX’s burgeoning constellation up to 240, making it the largest in orbit to date.

On Wednesday, Tesla released its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2019. For the final three months of the year, Tesla brought in $6.4 billion in automotive revenues, a 1 percent increase on Q4 2018. Total revenues for the company during the quarter were $7.4 billion, a two percent rise from the same period the year before. Total revenues for the year were $24.6 billion, an increase of 14 percent compared to 2018. Once generally accepted accounting principles were applied, that translates to a quarterly profit of $105 million, a 25 percent decline from Q4 2018. (Regulatory credits brought in $133 million in Q4 2019.) Free cash flow increased by 11 percent compared to the same time period the year before to just over $1 billion.

The results come on the back of record deliveries of the Model 3 sedan. Between September and December of last year, the company built 86,958 Model 3s and delivered 92,620, a year-on-year increase of 42 percent and 46 percent, respectively. Tesla is also keeping less inventory on hand; globally, the company was at 11 days of sales for Q4 2019, a drop of 42 percent year on year.

However, Tesla noted in a letter to investors that gross profits “were essentially flat” as volume growth and manufacturing efficiency and cost reductions were offset by a decrease in average sales price and more leased cars. Deliveries of the Models S and X continue to decline year-on-year, falling by 29 percent.
