Marlboro owner's stake in Juul is worth a third of its original value

When cigarette giant Altria invested $12.8 billion into Juul, it probably thought this was a brilliant move that gave it a stake in the future as conventional smoking continued to decline. It’s probably having second thoughts in 2020, however. The…

GM Resurrects The Hummer As A 1000 HP Electric Tesla Cybertruck Slayer Hopeful
Here’s a name we haven’t though much about in the past decade or so: Hummer. Hummer was once a name synonymous with excess thanks to its big, burly lifted SUVs that were loathed for their immense girth and equally voracious thirst for unleaded gasoline. The brand was eventually shutdown in 2010, making it a victim of General Motors’ bankruptcy

Pinterest Bans Misinformation About Voting and the Census

An anonymous reader shares a report: Pinterest is ramping up its efforts to crack down on political misinformation ahead of the 2020 election — a sign that the platform best known for lighthearted fare such as recipes, wedding planning and beauty tips is not immune from the challenges facing other major social media sites. The company tells The Technology 202 that it will now remove any content that misleads people about where, when or how to vote. It is also promising to crack down on any hoaxes that could turn off people from participating in the census, as experts warn the count could be a key target for bad actors seeking to meddle with the U.S. democratic process. Pinterest’s new “civic participation” policy will apply to content from users’ posts and ads on the service.

“This is an Internet problem,” said Aerica Shimizu Banks, Pinterest’s lead for federal policy and social impact. The only way to address misinformation broadly, Banks adds, is for tech companies and government officials to work together. Pinterest, like other tech companies, will report any count-related hoaxes to the U.S. Census Bureau so that the agency can debunk them and ensure they’re not spreading on other social networks.

Apple, Samsung Practically Tied In Global Smartphone Sales: Report
In what is like to come as a surprise to absolutely no one, the latest market research data shows Apple and Samsung shipping around the same number of smartphones, putting the two technology behemoths on relatively equal footing (in terms of market share). It’s a little hard to gauge, though, because Apple no longer provides specific sales

Here are the 62 brand-new emoji for 2020

Unicode Emoji 13.0 has been finalized, and with it come 62 totally new emoji plus 55 gender and skin tone variants. The 117 new glyphs bring us to 3,304 total emoji, surely covering every tiny-image-communication-need you could possibly have (Right? Right??). As usual, the standard has just been finalized, but platform vendors like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and others still need to whip up their own custom emoji styles. For now we have a finished set from the Internet’s leading authority on emoji, Emojipedia, which are shown above.

As far as regular smiley faces go, there’s now a “smiling face with tear,” which seems to be for someone who was crying and is now starting to feel better. There’s a “disguised face” emoji that is modeled after Groucho Marx’s iconic mustache and glasses. For body parts there are “pinched fingers” a classic Italian hand gesture, along with an anatomical heart and lungs.

There are lots of new animal emoji for black cat, bison, mammoth, beaver, and seal, along with the extinct dodo and the soon-to-be-extinct polar bear. There are also bugs and insects like beetles, cockroaches, flies, and worms. For food, we have bubble tea, flatbread, tamale, fondue, teapot, blueberries, and olives.

Sony's First Android-Powered Walkman Is Damn Compelling

Why would anyone want a Walkman in the streaming age? That’s the question I asked myself when I first fiddled with the small Sony NW-A105. One month later, I’ve learned enough about the music player to answer that question and many more. Sometimes its good to cut out the distractions of texts and phone calls and just…

Whoa: The Most Detailed Images Of The Sun Ever Captured

sun-detail-1.jpg

These are the most detailed images of the sun taken to date, captured by the National Science Foundation’s recently completed Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope atop the summit of Haleakala, Maui, in Hawai’i. Some more info about just what the hell we’re looking at, which apparently isn’t unpopped popcorn:

The image shows a pattern of turbulent, “boiling” gas that covers the entire sun. The cell-like structures – each about the size of Texas – are the signature of violent motions that transport heat from the inside of the sun to its surface. Hot solar material (plasma) rises in the bright centers of “cells,” cools off and then sinks below the surface in dark lanes in a process known as convection. In these dark lanes we can also see the tiny, bright markers of magnetic fields. Never before seen to this clarity, these bright specks are thought to channel energy up into the outer layers of the solar atmosphere called the corona. These bright spots may be at the core of why the solar corona is more than a million degrees!

Fascinating. I can still remember the first time I looked at the sun through binoculars when I was a kid and couldn’t see at night for two weeks. I also remember the first time I looked at a booger under a microscope. My point is, science: I’ve been doing it for a long time.

Keep going for a trippy gif of the sun in action. I think the devil tried to speak to me!
