The $35,000 Tesla Model 3 Is Here At Last

The Tesla Model 3 first entered “production,” if that’s what you wanted to call it back then, almost two years ago in 2017. But it’s been impossible to actually buy the long-promised, $35,000 base model of the car that so many were hoping for to help them enter the electric future. Until now.

Mimicking RTX Global Illumination with Traditional Graphics Techniques

Gamers Nexus created a demonstration that illustrates the positives and negatives of RTX usage by utilizing the DXR implementation in Unreal Engine. They create environments using traditional graphics techniques that fake RTX global illumination and then recreate them using the accuracy of real-time ray tracing. Viewers can visually see the ups and downs of using DXR as noise rises and performance declines. This is the first video of a series that will delve into the topic.

Today’s content fakes global illumination to illustrate the ups and downs of using RTX. The upside is obvious — it’s easier, allows better dynamic movement of objects while retaining GI, and is theoretically more accurate. The downside is performance, clearly, and noise. Our 100% ray-traced… “game” provides some early demos of DXR’s implementation into Unreal Engine, which is presently (at writing) on its third preview build of the DXR implementation. Epic Games still has a lot of work to do on this front, but we can take an advance look at RTX shadows, reflections, global illumination, and more.

To Defeat Perfectionism, Make Mistakes on Purpose

The urge to be perfect can prevent you from taking action. You don’t share creative projects that aren’t 100% ready, or you’re afraid to ask someone out if you’re not sure it’s exactly right—so you just … don’t. If you’re feeling stymied by this need to never screw up, try making a mistake on purpose.

YouTube will now take stronger action to prevent predatory comments posted on videos of children. According to a blog post, YouTube will suspend comments on videos that feature minors that “could be at risk of attracting predatory behavior.” This measure is designed to prevent predatory commenters from gathering in the comments section of such videos.

While the word “all” isn’t used to describe the to-be-comment-free videos, YouTube explains that only a “small number” of creators will be able to keep their comment sections enabled on videos that include kids.

“These channels will be required to actively moderate their comments, beyond just using our moderation tools, and demonstrate a low risk of predatory behavior,” YouTube’s blog post says. “We will work with them directly, and our goal is to grow this number over time as our ability to catch violative comments continues to improve.”

A Back Of The Toilet Thor's Hammer Toilet Paper Holder

thor-hammer-toilet-paper-holder-1.jpg

This is the Thor’s Hammer Mjolnir Toilet Paper Holder created by 3D Visuals & Design Co. and available on Amazon. The entirely too expensive toilet paper holder costs $50 and sits on the back of your toilet tank (or any other flat surface). You can see in the picture what this one reads, but there’s another product photo below that just reads ‘WHOEVER SITS HERE AND HOLDS THIS HAMMER SHALL POSSESS THE POWER OF THOR“, so I’m not entirely sure which one you’re getting if you actually buy one, since there’s no option. I guess it’s purchase at your own risk. Alternatively, just don’t buy one and do what I do and leave an empty toilet paper roll on the back of the tank like a normal person whose girlfriend hates coming over.

Keep going for the other shot.

US Companies Put Record Number of Robots To Work in 2018

U.S. companies installed more robots last year than ever before, as cheaper and more flexible machines put them within reach of businesses of all sizes and in more corners of the economy beyond their traditional foothold in car plants. From a report: Shipments hit 28,478, nearly 16 percent more than in 2017, according to data seen by Reuters that was set for release on Thursday by the Association for Advancing Automation, an industry group based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Shipments increased in every sector the group tracks, except automotive, where carmakers cut back after finishing a major round of tooling up for new truck models.

A Beautiful Waterfall Cascading Down An Outdoor Stairway

This is a video of a waterfall caused by heavy rains cascading down some stairs at the Culinary Institute of America in St Helena, California. I felt like the only thing missing from the video were some salmon trying to jump up those stairs to throw a spawning orgy at the top and then die. “Is that how you want to go, GW?” What do you mean? “Like at an orgy.” Don’t be ridiculous, I have a reputation to uphold, I can’t be dying at some kink-fueled orgy. “Just checking.” I’m kidding, obviously I’m 110% fine with that. But I want my obituary to read, ‘He died happy — so lost in a mountain of flesh he couldn’t even tell which way was up.’

Keep going for the video, which is way too much walking to the waterfall stairs and not enough of the waterfall stairs. Honestly, the gif is really all you need to see.
