How to Crack Your Couch's Secret Cleaning Code

I need advice! We have an “S” fabric couch we like enough (really, a couch we can’t afford to replace right now). We got it when our daughter was about 1, and she’s 8 now. There’s a cornucopia of stains, visible and other: milk, spit up, yogurt, chocolate, ice cream, oil, and probably another kid’s weight worth of…

SK Hynix Details DDR5-6400

SK Hynix this week revealed some additional technical details about its upcoming DDR5-6400 memory chip at the International Solid State Circuits Conference. The die size of the company’s 16 Gb DDR5 chip is at a high end of historical DRAM die sizes, so the cost of the device will likely be quite high. However, the increased DRAM density per square millimeter will likely enable SK Hynix to build rather cost effective 8 Gb DDR5 ICs.

What It's Like To Write About Race And Video Games

I’m no stranger to controversial takes. I ask people at parties whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich (it’s not). I think Jupiter Ascending is a fun movie, and if I never see another superhero flick again I think I would be okay. But every time I mention race on this site, even if my opinion isn’t nearly as…

Create Free Overlays for Your Game Streams With This Site

As much as I’ve wanted to give game-streaming a try, I’m always tentative to jump into the Twitch waters for two reasons: I don’t have a solid background behind my gaming desktop’s chair, which would make it tricky to key out everything but my face, and I don’t have any neat animations that would keep all 10 viewers…

AMD Radeon Adrenalin 2019 Drivers Finally Add Radeon Vega Support For Ryzen APUs

AMD Radeon Adrenalin 2019 Drivers Finally Add Radeon Vega Support For Ryzen APUs
The driver situation for Ryzen APUs with Radeon Vega Graphics hasn’t exactly been optimal (to say the least) since the chips initially launched back in 2017. Whereas the company’s mainline Radeon graphics cards (i.e. Radeon RX 580, Radeon RX Vega 56/64) get continual driver updates to provide Game Day-0 support, Ryzen processors with Radeon

Linus Torvalds Weighs In On Apple's Future Migration To ARM And The Post-x86 Mac
Linus Torvalds has never been one to mince words. Sometimes he can be a little too brash in his opinion, a trait he acknowledged before taking a brief hiatus for some soul searching. He is also extremely knowledgeable. A bit of both (brashness and knowledge) came out in a series of forum posts discussing ARM hardware and servers.

Extreme CO2 Levels Could Trigger Clouds 'Tipping Point' and 8C of Global Warming

If atmospheric CO2 levels exceed 1,200 parts per million (ppm), it could push the Earth’s climate over a “tipping point”, finds a new study. This would see clouds that shade large part of the oceans start to break up. From a report: According to the new paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience, this could trigger a massive 8C rise in global average temperatures — in addition to the warming from increased CO2. The only similar example of rapid warming at this magnitude in the Earth’s recent history is the Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum 55m years ago, when global temperatures increased by 5-8C and drove widespread extinction of species on both the oceans and land.

However, scientists not involved in the research caution that the results are still speculative and that other complicating factors could influence if or when a tipping point is reached. The threshold identified by the researchers — a 1,200ppm concentration of atmospheric CO2 — is three times current CO2 concentrations. If fossil fuel use continues to rapidly expand over the remainder of the century, it is possible levels could get that high. The Representative Concentration Pathways 8.5 scenario (RCP8.5), a very high emissions scenario examined by climate scientists, has the Earth’s atmosphere reaching around 1,100ppm by the year 2100. But this would require the world to massively expand coal use and eschew any climate mitigation over the rest of this century. Further reading: A state-of-the-art supercomputer simulation indicates that a feedback loop between global warming and cloud loss can push Earth’s climate past a disastrous tipping point in as little as a century.

We Destroyed the 'Unbreakable' Pantyhose, But They Still Beat Every Other Kind

Anyone who’s ever worn pantyhose can tell you they’re fashion’s flimsiest wardrobe staple. Toenail too sharp? Well, there’s a hole. Did you try shoving your foot in without delicately scrunching up the fabric beforehand? 100 percent guaranteed tear. Wearing thigh high boots with a zipper? Hello, snag and huge run.

Chinese Police Test Gait-Recognition Technology That Identifies People Based on How They Walk

You can tell a lot of things from the way someone walks. Chinese artificial intelligence start-up Watrix says its softwares can identify a person from 50 meters away — even if they have covered their face or have their back to a camera — making it more than a match for Sherlock Holmes. From a report: Known as gait recognition, the technology works by analyzing thousands of metrics about a person’s walk, from body contour to the angle of arm movement to whether a person has a toe-in or toe-out gait, to then build a database. “With facial recognition people need to look into a camera — cooperation is not needed for them to be recognized [by our technology],” said Huang Yongzhen, co-founder and chief executive of Watrix, in an interview in Beijing. Features like this have given Watrix an edge in catching runaway criminals, who tend to avoid surveillance, said Huang. Police on the streets of Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, have already run trials of gait recognition technology, said Huang, and the company officially launched its 2.0 version last week, which supports analysis of real-time camera feeds at a mega-city level.

Latest Nvidia Drivers Patch Security Vulnerabilities

Nvidia released the 419.17 drivers a few days ago, and as we noted, they featured a number of new SLI profiles, GPU video encoding improvements, and the usual round of bug fixes and enhancements. But yesterday, Bleeping Computer found that the new drivers also came with fixes to a number of security vulnerabilities, with CVVS V3 scores ranging from 8.8 (High/Serious) to 2.2 (Low). Nvidia claims that all of the most serious vulnerabilities should be fixed by simply installing the 419.17 drivers, and at least some of them were already patched in older Quadro and Tesla driver releases, but one vulnerability in particular requires manual intervention. CVE-2018-6260, which appears to be related to the performance counter exploit researchers published last November, requires manual user intervention to patch. The 419.17 release notes describe the fix, which I’ve quoted below.

The NVIDIA graphics driver contains a vulnerability (CVE-2018-6260) that may allow access to application data processed on the GPU through a side channel exposed by the GPU performance counters. GPU performance counters are needed by developers in order to use NVIDIA developer tools such as CUPTI, Nsight Graphics, and Nsight Compute. In order to address CVE-2018-6260 the driver needs to be updated and additional steps listed below are needed to disable access to non-admin users. For more information about CVE-2018-6260 visit the NVIDIA Security Bulletin 4772. Access to GPU performance counters should be disabled for non-admin users who do not need to use NVIDIA developer tools. Restricting access to GPU performance counters can be accomplished through the NVIDIA Control Panel->Developer->Manage GPU Performance Counters page (NV Control Panel v8.1.950). Refer to the Developer->Manage GPU Performance Counters section of the NVIDIA Control Panel Help for instructions.

Those release notes suggest the fix may not even be necessary for users who don’t have the “developer settings” checkbox enabled, and the vulnerability page notes that it requires “local user access” to exploit anyway.
