Computer Servers 'Stranded' in Space

A pair of Hewlett Packard Enterprise servers sent up to the International Space Station in August 2017 as an experiment have still not come back to Earth, three months after their intended return. From a report: Together they make up the Spaceborne Computer, a Linux system that has supercomputer processing power. They were sent up to see how durable they would be in space with minimal specialist treatment. After 530 days, they are still working. Their return flight was postponed after a Russian rocket failed in October 2018. HPE senior content architect Adrian Kasbergen said they may return in June 2019 if there is space on a flight but “right now they haven’t got a ticket.” The company is working with Nasa to be “computer-ready” for the first manned Mars flight, estimated to take place in about 2030. The company is also working with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The GTX 1660 is Rumored to Launch in Mid March

The Taiwanese news outlet DigiTimes claims that the Nvidia will launch the mid-range GTX 1660 graphics card on March 15, at a price point of $229. This more or less lines up with the latest info from our own industry sources, who claim the 1660 will launch on March 14 at that same price point. Meanwhile, DigiTimes also expects the GTX 1650 to launch on April 15th at the US $179 price point. We can’t verify that particular claim yet, but the latest rumor from Videocardz indicated that the GTX 1650 would launch “next month” in late March.

With the launch of the four products bearing high price-performance ratios, Nvidia is apparently seeking to refocus its graphics card business on the medium- and low-end market in the first half of 2019 to prevent its profits from falling further and drive AMD’s share in the market down to under 25% or even 20%, industry sources commented. The drastic shrinkage in demand for crypto mining graphic cards seen since the second quarter of 2018 prompted Nvidia to fast reduce its inventory in the following months, minimizing the impact on profitability. For the fiscal quarter from November 2018 to January 2019, Nvidia’s revenues plunged 24% on year and 31% on quarter to US$2.205 billion, and its profits for the quarter plunged 54% sequentially and 49% on year to US$567 million.

Lenovo's New 595-Gram Portable Display: The ThinkVision M14 USB-C Monitor

At the Mobile World Congress trade show, Lenovo has introduced a new portable display designed specifically for workers on the move. The ThinkVision M14 monitor matches design of the company’s ThinkPad notebooks, weighs like a modern tablet, and is thin enough to be held in a cabin luggage. Our Lenovo demonstrator described it ‘like paper’.

A Beginner’s Guide to Intuitive Eating

I first encountered the phrase “intuitive eating” on Instagram, and my first assumption was that it was another list of dieting rules wrapped in a pretty package of empowerment and self-care. Then I noticed the bagels. And the cupcakes. And the glasses of wine. Having struggled with my own sometimes disordered…

Congresswoman Destroys Equifax CEO Mark Begor About Privacy

An anonymous reader shares a report: In a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Representative Katie Porter (D-CA) asked whether Equifax CEO Mark Begor would be willing to share his address, birth date, and Social Security number publicly at the hearing. Begor declined, citing the risk of “identity theft,” letting Porter criticize Equifax’s legal response to the 2017 security breach that exposed almost 150 million people’s data of that sort to an unknown intruder. The company had unsuccessfully asked a judge presiding over a class-action suit over the breach to dismiss it, saying the plaintiffs hadn’t “sufficiently alleged injury and proximate causation” to bring suit, as Yahoo Finance reported late last month.

IT snafu leads to IBM asking applicants if they are “yellow” or “coloured”

It's a safe bet that IBM CEO Ginni Rometty did not personally review the intern application form.

IBM was forced to apologize after drop-down menus on an American recruiting site asked applicants to identify themselves with several racially insensitive terms: “yellow,” “mulatto,” and “coloured.” Unsurprisingly, this sparked outrage on Twitter. A video is available here.

It seems pretty clear what happened here. The form actually had two different menus that asked “Please state your ethnic group”—which is strange on its own. One of the menus asked applicants to choose from options including “White,” “Black,” “Yellow,” “Mulato,” and “Not a Brazil National.” The other included “Afrian,” “Coloured,” and “Not a South African National.”

The first menu seems to be a clumsy translation of Brazilian racial categories. The Brazilian census uses the Portuguese word “amarelo” (yellow) to describe Brazilians of Asian descent. The census also has an official category for “pardos”—Brazilians of mixed race.

Cooking The Krusty Krab's King-Size Ultra Krabby Supreme (Double Battered…On A Stick) In Real Life

Above: Cross section with stick removed.

This is another video from Binging With Babish (previously) walking us through the steps of recreating the Krusty Krab’s King-Size Ultra Krabby Patty (double battered and served on a stick) in real life. Like finding your roommate seemingly dead on the kitchen floor when you’re going for a midnight snack without your glasses on, it’s a heart-stopper. Would I still eat one? *labored breathing* I really shouldn’t. But *peers around office for signs of my doctor* maybe just a little nibble *doctor leaps out of recycling bin next to printer with a snack bag of carrots* “Oh no you don’t!” Dammit, how do you keep doing that?! “Also I found the mayo in your shampoo bottle in the shower.” But that’s my comfort mayo!

Keep going for the video while I go test my blood pressure with the machine at the local pharmacy (hopefully I can get my arm out when it catches fire this time).
