Foxconn is Allegedly Rethinking Wisconson LCD Manufacturing Plans
A report from Reuters suggests that Foxconn Technology Group is “reconsidering” their previously announced plans to manufacture LCD panels in Wisconsin. Instead of hiring factory workers, Foxconn may bring on more researchers and engineers to the Wisconsin Campus, turning it into a “technology hub” instead of a manufacturing center. Louis Woo, special assistant to Foxconn Chief Executive Terry Gou, told Reuters that “In terms of TV, we have no place in the U.S.,” and that they “can’t compete,” pointing to high U.S. labor costs and other factors.
Rather than manufacturing LCD panels in the United States, Woo said it would be more profitable to make them in greater China and Japan, ship them to Mexico for final assembly, and import the finished product to the United States… Currently, to qualify for the tax credits Foxconn must meet certain hiring and capital investment goals. It fell short of the employment goal in 2018 – hiring 178 full-time jobs rather than the 260 targeted – failing to earn a tax credit of up to $9.5 million. The company may be prepared to walk away from future incentives if it is unable to meet Wisconsin’s job creation and capital investment requirements, according to the source familiar with the matter.

Wargroove Is A Very Good Strategy Game

There are two things you should know about the indie game Wargroove, which comes out for PC, Switch, and Xbox One on Friday. The first is that it’s a smart, challenging turn-based strategy game that’s essentially Advance Wars for the modern era. The second is that you get to play as a puppy who wears armor.

Verizon 5G Home Rollout Hits Proprietary Roadblock, Deployments Stalled Until 2H 2019

It appears that Verizon has realized one of the big downsides to proclaiming “first” when it comes to its 5G wireless rollout. Verizon claimed to have the first 5G network available in the United States when it launched Verizon 5G Home back in early October, but it was using non-standardized 5G hardware.

Electronics Are 'the Fastest-Growing Waste Stream in the World'
Electronic waste is a growing threat to the environment. Thanks to the low cost of manufacturing, it’s easier than ever for corporations to pump out millions of laptops, smart phones, internet of things devices, and other electronics. From a report: A new initiative combining the efforts of the United Nations and the World Economic Forum and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development wants to change that. The group formed the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy (PACE), and announced itself at Davos — a yearly gathering of the world’s wealthy elite — where it released its first report. “E-waste is now the fastest-growing waste stream in the world,” PACE’s report said. “It is estimated this waste stream reached 48.5 million tonnes in 2018.” Most of that waste comes from Europe and the United States and ends up in places like Nigeria and Hong Kong, which suffer the human and economic costs of disposing of the material. “The material value [of e-waste] alone is worth $62.5 billion, three times more than the annual output of the world’s silver mines and more than the GDP of most countries,” PACE’s report [PDF] said.

Netflix, Amazon, and Hollywood studios shut down maker of “free TV” box

The entertainment industry has scored a big victory over the maker of a “free TV” box that helped users watch pirated video.
Dragon Media Inc., whose “Dragon Box” device connects to TVs and lets users watch video without a cable TV or streaming service subscription, has agreed to shut down the Dragon Box services and pay $14.5 million in damages to plaintiffs from the entertainment industry.
Dragon Media was sued in January 2018 by Netflix, Amazon, Columbia Pictures, Disney, Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros. Dragon Media’s lawyer initially predicted that the lawsuit would backfire on the entertainment industry, but the Dragon Box maker must have decided it had little chance of winning at trial.

EA gives in to Belgian regulators, stops selling FIFA loot boxes
Enlarge / Belgian players will no longer be able to buy access to screens like this in FIFA 19
Electronic Arts is halting the sale of its FIFA Points virtual currency in Belgium. The move effectively ends the ability to buy randomized, in-game FIFA Ultimate Team card packs in the country, which the Belgian Gaming Commission has ruled is a form of illegal gambling.
EA has spent the last few months defying a Belgian order to stop selling those Ultimate Team packs in the local version of the game, drawing an investigation from the country’s prosecutor’s office. But this week, “after further discussions with the Belgian authorities, we have decided to stop offering FIFA Points for sale in Belgium,” the company wrote in a public message.
“While we are taking this action, we do not agree with Belgian authorities’ interpretation of the law, and we will continue to seek more clarity on the matter as we go forward,” the statement continues.
