Traditional passwords have started to yield ground to biometric security options, like fingerprint scanning and even retina scans. Going even deeper (literally), there’s yet another method that involves authenticating a person’s identity by scanning his or her veins. It sounds secure, except that researchers have already found a way to thwart

Epic Games to Launch an App Store to Compete with Google and Apple
According to the Wall Street Journal, Epic Games is working on an mobile app store to compete with the Google Play app store for Android users in 2019. As a consequence of competing with Google, Epic Games will also be competing with Apple and its App Store for iOS. The Epic Games app store will take a 12% cut of revenue generated from sales compared to the 30% cut that Google and Apple take. The first phase of the Epic Games store went live for the PC and Mac earlier this month. The U.S. Supreme Court is already looking at the fee structure and the monopoly that Apple has created with its App Store.
Epic says it will start selling games for Android devices sometime next year. It already distributes “Fortnite” this way, bypassing Google’s Play store. No such move is possible within Apple’s ecosystem, as the company retains tight control over the apps that can be distributed to its devices. But Ben Schachter of Macquarie Capital believes that if Google reduces its own take on apps in response to competition, Apple would be pressured to follow.

What Was the First Recreational Drug?
Sex, war, and getting insanely high: Society might’ve changed in the last 60,000 years or so, but these interests have remained constant. In a way, this is a kind of golden age for the aspiring recreational drug user: putting aside the public health consequences of a market flooded with mass-produced speed,…

Scientists Drill Into 3,500 Feet of Ice To Reach a Mysterious Antarctic Lake
Late last week, a team of about 50 scientists, drillers, and support staff successfully punched through nearly 4,000 feet of ice to access an Antarctic subglacial lake for just the second time in human history. From a report: On Friday, the Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access (SALSA) team announced they’d reached Lake Mercer after melting their way through an enormous frozen river with a high-pressure, hot-water drill. The multi-year effort to tap into the subglacial lake — one of approximately 400 scientists have detected across Antarctica — offers a rare opportunity to study the biology and chemistry of the most isolated ecosystems on Earth. The only other subglacial lake humans have drilled into — nearby Lake Whillans, sampled in 2013 — demonstrated that these extreme environments can play host to diverse microbial life. Naturally, scientists are stoked to see what they’ll find lurking in Lake Mercer’s icy waters. “We don’t know what we’ll find,” John Priscu, a biogeochemist at Montana State University and chief scientist for SALSA, told Earther via satellite phone from the SALSA drill camp on the Whillans Ice Plain. “We’re just learning, it’s only the second time that this has been done.”

The Best Technology Guides of 2018
If I had to pick a theme to sum up technology in 2018, it would be “bother me less.” From social networks that collect way too much data to websites that leak your password to the world to the annual circus of hardware updates that feel less and less worthy of your hard-earned cash, it feels like now, more than ever,…

Nokia 9 PureView Official Render Leaks Revealing Penta-Lens Camera System
One of two things need to happen before a leak or rumor graduates to ‘confirmed’ status—either the company behind the unreleased product has to make a formal announcement or acknowledgement, or prominent leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) needs to get his hands on a press render and post it for all the world to see. Sure, technically

Runaways' Creators on Why a Surprising Marvel Character Appears so Soon and Plans for Season 3
Because the original run of Marvel Comics’ Runaways was relatively short compared to many other series, Joshua Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the co-creators of Hulu’s live-action adaptation, have been very deliberate about not rushing through the show’s plot in favor of taking time to build out its characters and the…

Mom Crochets Giant Playable Monopoly Board For Daughter
These are two shots of the giant crocheted Monopoly board that Twitter user pilotviruet’s mother crafted and presented to her for Christmas. That is pretty deluxe. Plus it makes flipping the board when you lose that much harder, although I suppose you could grab one side of the blanket and give it a wave like a parachute in elementary school gym class. Those were the days, weren’t they? “Elementary school?” Did you know what anxiety or taxes were? “Valid point.” And that rectangular pizza for lunch! *kisses fingers like Italian chef*
Keeep going for one more shot.

Next-Gen PlayStation And Xbox Consoles Rumored To Have 8-12GB RAM
There is quite a bit of uncertainty surrounding the high-end console scene, in terms of what kind of upgrade paths Microsoft and Sony might be considering. What we’ve seen with the current generation of consoles is a series of incremental upgrades, like the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. That said, there are plenty of rumors pointing to true successors,

Researchers Allegedly Break Write Speed Record With MRAM Test Chip
Researchers from Tohoku University in Japan say they’ve developed a 128mb MRAM test chip that can achieve a write speed of 14 nanoseconds. The researchers say that’s “currently the world’s fastest write speed for embedded memory application with a density over 100Mb.” The title of the associated paper also mentions that the memory has an endurance “greater than 1010,” and that it can retain data for 10 years at 85 degrees Celcius, and the press release says it only need 1.2V to operate. As we’ve noted before, MRAM has the potential to replace specific uses cases for SRAM, eDRAM, and significantly slower non-volatile storage in the near future, and Intel is supposedly shipping products with 14nm MRAM right now. Thanks to cageymaru for the tip.
STT-MRAM is capable of high-speed operation and consumes very little power as it retains data even when the power is off. Because of these features, STT-MRAM is gaining traction as the next-generation technology for applications such as embedded memory, main memory and logic. Three large semiconductor fabrication plants have announced that risk mass-production will begin in 2018… The current capacity of STT-MRAM is ranged between 8Mb-40Mb. But to make STT-MRAM more practical, it is necessary to increase the memory density. The team at the Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems (CIES) has increased the memory density of STT-MRAM by intensively developing STT-MRAMs in which magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are integrated with CMOS. This will significantly reduce the power-consumption of embedded memory such as cache and eFlash memory.

World of Tanks to Get Better Multithreading Support
Following the likes of World of Warcraft, Planetside 2, and other MMOs, Wargaming.net announced that the World of Tanks engine is set to get a multi-threading overhaul. In their recent dev diary, developers note that most of their userbase tends to upgrade CPUs relatively infrequently compared to GPUs, and that most cores sit idle while a single core runs at relatively inefficient turbo clocks in the current incarnation of the engine. In addition to performance increases from the overhaul, the devs noted that the extra CPU power could allow them to implement features that were previously performance-prohibitive. Check out the dev diary below:
The new version of the Core engine will support multi-threading. What is it? How does it work? And what does it mean for players? Watch this to find out and leave your comments!
