The Best Family Memoirs I Read This Year
I am something of a memoir junkie. I don’t exclusively read parenting memoirs (if you haven’t read The Shepherd’s Life or The Night of the Gun yet, I’m sad for you), but 2018 seems to have been The Year of the Parenting/Family Memoir for me.

Intel VT-d Scalable Mode Coming To Linux 4.21 – Makes Up Scalable I/O Virtualization
The IOMMU changes were sent in today for the Linux 4.21 kernel merge window. There are some AMD IOMMU improvements, new Qualcomm SMMUv2 IOMMU hardware support, NUMA-aware allocations in the IOMMU DMA code for some very slight performance benefits, and most notably is likely the scalable mode support within the Intel VT-d driver…

Motiv's Ring With Built-in 2FA Would Be Nicer If It Worked Consistently
Smart rings are a tricky thing to get right. Tech companies have a hard enough time miniaturizing all the necessary sensors into a watch, let alone a ring. That’s why the Motiv Ring was compelling when it launched in 2017—it stuffed three days of battery life, heart rate monitoring, and your usual step and activity…

China Gets on the Bandwagon To Provide Global Satellite Internet
Over the weekend, China launched a satellite into low-earth orbit, the first step of a plan to provide global satellite internet to people who still don’t have reliable access. From a report: Nearly 3.8 billion people are unconnected to the internet, and women and rural poor are particularly affected. The satellite, called Hongyun-1, took off at China’s national launching site Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Saturday (Dec. 22). Hongyun-1, or “rainbow cloud,” is the first of 156 satellites of the same name developed by state-owned spacecraft maker China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). CASIC intends to launch all the Hongyun satellites by around 2022 to form a constellation that will improve internet access in remote parts of China, and eventually in developing countries, a plan first announced in 2016. Most of the satellites will operate 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) above the earth, far lower than satellites are typically placed. The project is “moving the internet currently on the ground into the sky,” said Hou Xiufeng, a spokesperson for CASIC, “It’s China’s first true low-orbit communication satellite… The launch will greatly boost commercial space.”

Nissan to Unveil Its Vision for Electric Mobility and the LEAF NISMO RC at CES 2019
Nissan has announced the unveiling of its Nissan Intelligent Mobility roadmap at CES 2019. The company has a vision to connect cars on the road to each other to achieve zero-emissions and zero-fatalities. This will be achieved through driving aids that allow you to sense more around you, while lending a helping hand when needed. Nissan envisions a future where the internal combustion engine become more efficient and electric vehicles gain more advanced technologies. Cars will be linked to the wider society as they gain the ability to interact with people, other cars, and road infrastructure. Remote vehicle operation, reduced traffic jams, more efficient car sharing and improved energy management are all goals for the next generation of Nissan vehicles. Nissan has announced the arrival of the dual-motor, all-electric LEAF NISMO RC race car. This will event will coincide with the arrival of the 2019 Nissan Leaf with improved range, power, and other improvements.
Powering the all-new Nissan LEAF NISMO RC are two electric motors at opposite ends of the chassis. The motors produce 240 kilowatts combined (120 kW each) and an astounding 640 Nm of instant torque to the wheels. They more than double the maximum power and the torque output of the previous LEAF NISMO RC, which was introduced in 2011. Drivetrain technology sourced from the new Nissan LEAF include the high-capacity lithium-ion battery and inverters. The power-to-weight ratio results in an impressive performance of zero to 100 kph in just 3.4 seconds — 50% quicker than the previous model.

Bikes, bowling balls, and the delicate balancing act that is modern recycling

Update: It’s New Year’s eve and Ars staffers are enjoying a winter break (inevitably filled with some joy rides and whatever that choose-your-own Black Mirror thing is). As such, we’re resurfacing a few favorites from the site archives appropriate for the occasion—like this tour of a facility that will inevitably be busy post-holidays. Our story on the Sims Municipal Recycling Center originally ran on December 7, 2015, and it appears unchanged below.
BROOKLYN, New York—A conveyor belt is keeping material flying past at speeds that require both concentration and rapid eye movement if you wanted to track a single item. Above the constant roar of all the heavy equipment, it’s just possible to make out the brief hissing of jets of high-pressure air. Those jets are produced where the conveyor belt ends, and most of the material plunges onto a second belt below. Each hiss, however, causes a carefully chosen item to leap off the end of the belt and soar into a different collection area, where yet another conveyor belt takes it on its way.
The process of carefully choosing which items to sift out is all done without human intervention. It’s based on how that object reflects light that’s outside the range of human vision.

The Five Best Anime Of 2018
Anime wasn’t very generous to us in 2018. There weren’t as many wholly original standouts, like in 2017, or 2016’s steady flow of genre-defining pillars. Adding to that, 2018 also gave us a couple stinkers in the “thanks, I hate it” category: an anime about anthropomorphic horse girls who race each other and are idol…

Help Bail Someone Out Tonight for the Price of a Drink
We live in a country where if you have enough money, you can buy your way out of jail while you await trial. This is profoundly unjust to people who don’t have ready cash on hand. Today, for #FreeThePeopleDay, consider donating the cost of one New Year’s Eve cocktail to a bail fund.

Samsung Patents In-Air Gesturing for VR
According to a report by Patently Mobile, Samsung recently filed a patent for an in-air gesture control system designed for AR and VR headsets. Such a system would use a color camera, a depth camera, and an infrared sensor with an infrared light for illumination, at the very least. Simple gestures detectable by the system might include pointing or grabbing, but there’s also a section about a “performance mode” that would let the device detect more complex gestures.
Samsung further describes that in order to detect a user’s complex gesture the full performance mode may be a mode of setting the depth sensor with the highest frame rate value and the IR sensor to emit an IR light with the highest illumination value. The headset performing in the full performance mode is able to detect the complex gesture and perform an operation corresponding to the detected complex gesture… Samsung filed this patent application in Q2 2018. It was published by USPTO earlier in Q4 2018. One of the inventors listed on Samsung’s patent filing is Ji Soo Yi, a VP at Samsung leading an AI Strategy Group that worked on Bixby 2.0 and other projects.

Severn Bridge, a Main Route Between England and Wales, Shuts as Drone Flown From Tower
A main route between England and Wales was closed after a man climbed a bridge and flew a drone from the top. An anonymous reader shares a report: Traffic was stopped on the M48 — the older of two Severn crossings — because of “concern for welfare,” police said. The man, in his 20s, came down voluntarily from the 47m (154ft) bridge tower and was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance. Highways England said it was deeply concerned and that “a person has put their life at serious risk”. “The incident was quickly spotted on our security cameras and reported to police and thankfully there was no injury or worse on this occasion,” it said. “Appropriate security is in place on the bridge, we are liaising with Avon and Somerset Police and will be undertaking investigations to determine if any damage was caused during the incident.” Police said: “Officers attended the M48 Severn Bridge at 08:10 this morning after concerns were raised for a man who appeared to have climbed one of the towers and was flying a drone off it.”
