FDA Halts One of the First Human CRISPR Studies Before it Begins

A trial planning to use the gene-editing tool CRISPR on sickle cell patients has been put on hold due to unspecified questions from US regulators. From a report: CRISPR Therapeutics, which is developing the therapy, sought approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in April to begin the study. The therapy involves extracting stem cells from a patient’s bone marrow and editing them with CRISPR in the lab. Once infused back into the patient, the idea is that the edited cells would give rise to healthy red blood cells. But according to a statement on Wednesday from CRISPR Therapeutics, the FDA ordered the company not to proceed with its study until it answers questions about its CRISPR treatment.

Rick and Morty's Renewal Took Forever So the Creators Could Ensure the Show's Wild Future

The Rick and Morty fanbase is known for getting a little… exuberant about the show, whether it’s in sauce-based shenanigans or the panicking that ensued during the lengthy time it took for Adult Swim to renew the show for a fourth season. But the reason it took so long in the first place was actually to make sure…

Telegram CEO: Apple has “prevented” app updates globally since April

Russia officially banned the secure message app Telegram in April, and now it appears the app is facing problems in other regions. According to a message posted on Telegram by the company’s CEO Pavel Durov, Apple has been “preventing” Telegram iOS app updates since April.

The version of the app currently in the App Store is two months old, and Durov claims features such as stickers will not work properly in iOS 11.4 (which was pushed out earlier this week) due to the lack of updates.

This comes after Roskomnadzor—Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media—ordered a block of the messaging app in the country in April. Russia’s Federal Security Service wanted access to Telegram’s users’ encrypted messages, saying it was necessary to monitor potential terrorists. Even after a Russian court ruled that the app should be blocked in Russian territories, Telegram refused to hand over encryption keys that would give Russian officials access to user data.

ASUS Releasing New 20 GPU Cryptocurrency Mining Motherboard

ASUS has designed a new cryptocurrency mining motherboard that has 20 PCIe over USB slots onboard that can handle the same number of GPUs. They previously released a 19 GPU mining board which used PCIe x1 slots to handle the GPU load. The new board is going to be demonstrated at Computex 2018 in Taipei and should hit the market sometime after the show. This isn’t new technology because others have released similar, but I believe this is a first by a major motherboard maker and it might be something miners would like to purchase since it will come with a nice warranty. All of you [H] miners need to chime in and let me know if this is something you’ve been looking for.

The updated State Detection GUI clearly identifies the location and status of each port along with the alphanumeric code that identifies it. To further streamline troubleshooting, the board will ship with matching alphanumeric labels to stick onto corresponding riser cards. You’ll be able to quickly look at the labels to find flagged GPUs instead of being forced to trace the path of cables connected to affected ports.

Now We Can 3D Print New Corneas

Believe it or not, over 15M people a year need cornea transplant – only 44,000 are completed due to lack of supply. Because of this, the scientists from Newcastle University have developed a way to 3D print corneas using a new “bio-ink” technique. They can build a new cornea with the printer in less than ten minutes. They scan the patient’s eye and the new cornea should be the exact size and shape of the cornea it will replace. This bodes well for the future of 3D printed body parts. Check out the video of a cornea printing.

Once printed, the team let the stem cells grow around the scaffolding provided by the alginate and collagen gel (the stem cells are what actually become the cornea once they mature; the other parts of the ink just support the stem cells). 83 percent of the keratocytes (a specific type of cornea cell) were still alive a week after printing — a promising result that indicates that the cells could, in fact, replace human corneas.

ProtonMail Launches Free ProtonVPN Service For Macs

The creators of popular encrypted email service ProtonMail have released a free version of their ProtonVPN software for macOS. From a report: Even though the free version does not contain the full features that you would come to expect from a paid VPN service it is more than capable of obfuscating IP addresses and your location. While ProtonVPN has already released Windows and Android versions, according to Dr. Andy Yen, CEO of ProtonMail, their reason for releasing the free macOS version “is to make the world a safer place by ensuring that citizens around the world have access to an Internet free of spying and censorship. Releasing a free VPN service for macOS is another important step in that direction.”

AOC Expands G90-Series Monitors: 144 Hz and FreeSync

AOC has announced a new addition to its G90-series of inexpensive gaming monitors with a new model with FreeSync capabilities and a high refresh rate. The new AOC G2590FX has similar key characteristics as other displays in the lineup, but saves some money by removing USB features and uses a different stand setup.

The AOC G2590FX is the fourth SKU in the G90 lineup that is positioned slightly below the G2590PX, but above the entry-level G2590VXQ. The new display is based on a 24.5-inch TN panel with a Full HD resolution, 400 nits brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 1 ms GtG response time, and 170°/160° horizontal/vertical viewing angles. The new monitor supports AMD’s FreeSync dynamic refresh rate technology with a 30-144 Hz range as well as low framerate compensation (LFC). In addition, it comes with various AOC enhancements for gaming monitors, including AOC’s low input lag feature as well as Shadow Control capability to make dark scenes brighter. The new unit has the same style as the rest LCDs in the G90 family: it features thin bezels and “gaming red” inlays.

There are a number of important differences between the AOC G2590FX and the more expensive G2590PX monitor. Firstly, the new product is not equipped with a USB 3.0 hub; secondly, it does not have an MHL input; thirdly, it does not come with built-in speakers; fourthly, it uses a slightly different stand.

The AOC G2590FX display will cost approximately £30/€35 lower than the AOC G2590PX, which is not a significant difference. Whether or not it makes sense to buy the cheaper version without a USB hub and a stand without height adjustment is up to end-users to decide. Meanwhile, it is clear that AOC is trying to expand its gaming lineup as significantly as possible in order to better compete against all rivals.
