At CES, The Tech Report got a private demo of a prototype Vive headset with Tobii eye tracking baked in. The demo starts with an accurate setting of interpupillary distance, which with today’s headsets is a bit of guesswork. After that came several demos, including robots that could tell when you made eye contact with them, and a couple games where the writer notes a substantial difference in accuracy and intuitiveness.
This looks incredible to me. higher resolution displays, wider FOV, and eye tracking seem to be the future for VR. I personally can’t wait for the tech to keep maturing, but it seems we’re hearing less and less about VR recently, and I hope that doesn’t mean the market is dying.
All told, Tobii’s demos proved incredibly compelling, and I was elated to finally experience the technology in action after hearing so much about it. The problem is that getting eye-tracking-equipped headsets onto the heads of VR pioneers is going to require all-new hardware—the company says its sensors require a companion ASIC to process and communicate the eye-tracking data to the host system, and it can’t simply be retrofitted to existing HMDs.

After suggesting that Fortnite is a priority, Epic shuts down another F2P game

Ten days after eerie-sounding news for the free-to-play online game Paragon, the series’ creators at Epic Games confirmed fans’ looming suspicions: the game will soon shut down.
Paragon‘s late-Friday announcement gives the game exactly three more months of life until its servers go dark on April 26. That means the game will have barely passed the two-year mark for its lifespan after a March 2016 “pay for early access” launch. The news comes with a frank admission of the “action MOBA” game’s failings and an even more frank apology to its fans.
“After careful consideration, and many difficult internal debates, we feel there isn’t a clear path for us to grow Paragon into a MOBA that retains enough players to be sustainable,” the post, authored by “the Paragon team,” says. “We didn’t execute well enough to deliver on the promise of Paragon. We have failed you—despite the team’s incredibly hard work—and we’re sorry.”

$500 Million Worth of Cryptocurrency Stolen From Japanese Exchange
Locke2005 shares a report from CNBC: Hackers stole several hundred million dollars’ worth of a lesser-known cryptocurrency from a major Japanese exchange Friday. Coincheck said that around 523 million of the exchange’s NEM coins were sent to another account around 3 a.m. local time (1 p.m. ET Thursday), according to a Google translate of a Japanese transcript of the Friday press conference from Logmi. The exchange has about 6 percent of yen-bitcoin trading, ranking fourth by market share on CryptoCompare. The stolen NEM coins were worth about 58 billion yen at the time of detection, or roughly $534.8 million, according to the exchange. Coincheck subsequently restricted withdrawals of all currencies, including yen, and trading of cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin. Locke2005 adds, “That, my friends, is the prime reason why speculating in cryptocurrency is a bad idea!”

Intel: Meltdown, Spectre silicon fixes coming 2018; 3D XPoint RAM, not so much
A 3D XPoint wafer. (credit: Intel)
As part of Intel’s fourth quarter financials release, CEO Brian Krzanich promised that chips shipping this year would include true hardware fixes for the Spectre and Meltdown attacks.
The promise to ship chips immune to the attack leaves many questions unanswered. It’s not clear if the fixes will be revisions of current generation Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, and Skylake parts, or if the modifications will be constrained to the Cannon Lake processors that are expected to ship this year. Nor is it clear what form the fix will take: better, higher-performance versions of the microcode and workarounds already being rolled out, or deeper modifications to the processor’s speculative execution and branch prediction behavior.
The company’s delayed transition to a 10nm manufacturing process also remains murky. At CES, Intel claimed that it had shipped some unspecified chips built on 10nm last year. The first half of this year will see low volume production, ramping to high volume in the second half. But exactly what processors—in what configurations, when, and in what volumes—remains unknown. Both Cannon Lake, built on the 10nm process, and Ice Lake, built on the refined “10nm+” process, are planned, but the company has said little concrete about exact timelines.

Woman Jumps From 4th Story Balcony Into Heavy Snow
Because jumping off your snowmobile is for amateurs, this is a video of a woman jumping from the railing of a fourth story balcony into the heavy snowfall that hit Davos, Switzerland — the heaviest snowfall since 2000. Thankfully for her and people like me who didn’t want to see somebody break their legs, the snow was sufficiently deep and soft enough to comfortably break her fall. Whew. That must have been exhilarating. Knowing my luck, I would have jumped off that balcony and found a tall pole buried in the snow. “Ouch.” With my anus. “I assumed that’s what you meant.” I’m a flag now.
Keep going for the video.

Madden NFL 18 Coming to ESPN
ESPN has made an announcement today that themselves, Disney, and the NFL have signed a multiyear deal to broadcast the Madden NFL Championship Series and future leagues surrounding the franchise. The agreement will broadcast two Madden-based leagues: The Madden NFL 18 Club Championship and the Madden NFL 18 Ultimate League.
Will be interesting to see how the format will look on TV. Big overproduced esports event vs. just showing it like it were a football game. Either way I’ll forget about it, not watch it, and not be upset at all, however I know that there are people who are absolutely nuts for Madden, so maybe it will do well.
The agreement encompasses several ESPN and Disney networks. The Madden NFL 18 Club Championship at the Pro Bowl will be on ESPNEWS; the finals at the Super Bowl will be on ESPN2/Deportes; and the Ultimate League Championship final will be on ESPN2. In addition, episodic series featuring the players and the stories behind them will air on Disney XD and ESPN VOD.

Two new cryptocurrency heists make off with over $400M worth of blockchange

The Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck has shut down trading and withdrawals from accounts after a reported theft of more than 500 million XEM—the blockchain-based cryptocurrency created by the NEM Foundation. At the time of the theft, 500 million XEM was worth approximately $400 million US. Police were reportedly at Coincheck’s offices.
Coincheck announced the shutdown of NEM deposits at about noon Japan Standard Time Friday (10:00pm Eastern Time on Thursday). In a follow-up announcement four hours later, a company spokesperson expanded the shutdown to all currencies, and by 6pm JST all payment processing had been suspended. “We sincerely apologize for these inconveniences and will continue to do our best to be back to normal operations as soon as possible,” the spokesperson wrote. At about the same time, police were seen at Coincheck’s offices.

Ars attempted to reach representatives of Coincheck and the NEM Foundation without success. Lon Wong, the president of the NEM Foundation, was quoted by Sead Fadilpašić and Stuart Garlick of Cryptonews.com as saying, “This is the biggest theft in the history of the world.” Wong told Cryptonews that NEM’s technology was not responsible and that Coincheck did not implement NEM’s multi-signature smart contract, “and that’s why they could have been hacked. They were very relaxed with their security measures.” It is not clear if there was actually a “hack” at this point.

No Thank You: High Rise In-Condo Pool Spills Its Water As The Building Sways From High Winds
Towels: You’re going to need way more than one.
This is a video from a high rise condo in the beach resort city of Balneário Camboriú, Brazil of a pool spilling its water as the building sways due to high winds. I feel like that was poor planning. Also, why is your pool in the kitchen? That makes it way too easy to cramp up and drown after a big meal. Who designed that pool anyways? It at least needs some geosynchronous magnetic stabilizing rods installed underneath it if you don’t want to lose any water. “What the hell are you talking about?” Ahahahhaha man I’m so stupid sometimes I even surprise myself.
Keep going for the whole video.

Bill Gates Thinks AI Taking Everyone's Jobs Could be a Good Thing
Bill Gates, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, thinks that artificial intelligence will take over a lot of jobs and ultimately will be a good thing. From a report:
In an interview, Gates said that robots taking over our jobs will make us more efficient, and lead to more free time. “Well, certainly we can look forward to the idea that vacations will be longer at some point,” Gates told Fox Business. “If we can actually produce twice as much as we make today with less labor, the purpose of humanity is not just to sit behind a counter and sell things, you know?”
