Sharpening a Worthless $1 Knife With a $300 Stone Turns It Into a Samurai Sword

The irony of working with cheap, dull knives in the kitchen is that you’re more likely to accidentally cut yourself than if you had razor-sharp blades to slice and dice with. But if you’re as skilled at sharpening knives as YouTube’s Kiwami Japan is, you can turn a dollar store blade into a tool for master chefs.

PS4 Jailbreak Might be Coming Soon

Specter released a PS4 4.05 kernel exploit to GitHub today and stated it will allow jailbreaking and kernel-level modification to the PS4 system. However, they are not providing code that allows for homebrew or pirating games. With that said, I’m sure others will be more than willing to utilize this exploit to do just that. Thanks, cageymaru.

Of course, jailbreaking has also become synonymous with breaking fundamental copy protection, allowing pirated software to run on a range of devices from cellphones to today’s cutting-edge games consoles. The flip side of that coin is that people are also able to run so-called ‘homebrew’ code, programs developed by hobbyists for purposes that do not breach copyright law.

Tesla Will Release a Pickup After the Model Y

Elon Musk has confirmed on twitter that Tesla will be releasing a pickup truck right after the Model Y debuts. Of course this probably puts this release 3 to 4 years from now, but it’s nice to know he’s going to put something out for us truck owners. Also, he also states it will be F150 class or larger. Depending on the range and cargo capacity this might actually put a Tesla in my garage.

I promise that we will make a pickup truck right after Model Y.

Google's Whole Hardware Thing Is Confusing the Hell Out of Me

Compiling the best and worst gadgets list this year I took note of a very sad fact: Google was on both lists. In its second year thoroughly devoted to the hardware game, Google managed to create earbuds so bad that storing them in their charging case requires a video explanation, and a laptop so fantastic I spend a…

Using Thunderbird? Update if you haven’t already

Enlarge (credit: Mozilla)

If you’re using Thunderbird for your email needs, make sure you’re on version 52.5.2. Mozilla recently released the new version, which has patches that squash a handful of bugs.

The bug, rated critical by the Mozilla Foundation, is CVE-2017-7845, which is a buffer overflow vulnerability affecting only Windows users. “A buffer overflow occurs when drawing and validating elements using Direct 3D 9 with the ANGLE graphics library, used for WebGL content,” Mozilla said in its security advisory. “This is due to an incorrect value being passed within the library during checks and results in a potentially exploitable crash.”

Two of the bugs are rated “high” in severity. CVE-2017-7846 is a JavaScript exploit affecting Thunderbird’s RSS reader capabilities. The second, CVE-2017-7847, is a CSS bug that could potentially allow an attacker to discover user data, like a user name.

China's extension of EV tax rebates is good news for car makers

Electric cars had their best year ever in 2017, but the market is still fragile — without subsidies, prices still aren’t cheap enough for the average consumer. The US decided to keep EV tax credits for 2018, much to the relief of EV fans and automak…

Acoustic Attacks on HDDs Can Sabotage PCs, CCTV Systems, ATMs, More

Catalin Cimpanu, writing for BleepingComputer: Attackers can use sound waves to interfere with a hard drive’s normal mode of operation, creating a temporary or permanent denial of state (DoS) that could be used to prevent CCTV systems from recording video footage or freeze computers dealing with critical operations. The basic principle behind this attack is that sound waves introduce mechanical vibrations into an HDD’s data-storage platters. If the sound is played at a specific frequency, it creates a resonance effect that amplifies the vibration effect. Because hard drives store vasts amounts of information inside small areas of each platter, they are programmed to stop all read/write operations during the time a platter vibrates so to avoid scratching storage disks and permanently damaging an HDD. Last week, scientists from the Princeton and Purdue universities published new research into the topic, expanding on the previous findings with the results of additional practical tests. The research team used a specially crafted test rig to blast audio waves at a hard drive from different angles, recording results to determine the sound frequency, attack time, distance from the hard drive, and sound wave angle at which the HDD stopped working.

Ubuntu 17.10's Laptop Issue Appears To Be Under Control, Fixable

A week ago Ubuntu 17.10’s ISO was pulled due to a show-stopping laptop bug whereby some UEFI-enabled laptops from multiple vendors were running into “BIOS corruption” where BIOS settings could no longer be changed, USB booting becoming non-functional, and similar UEFI-related issues. Fortunately, a fixed kernel is now available and some affected users are reporting a successful workaround for making their laptops full-functioning once again…

Big titles must wait as Nintendo pushes back 64GB Switch game card rollout

Enlarge (credit: Mark Walton)

Those wishing for 64GB Nintendo Switch game cards will have to keep waiting. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Nintendo pushed back the rollout of 64GB game cards until 2019, citing “technical issues” as the problem. Game developers get Switch cards from Nintendo, so this means that they’ll have to wait to get game cards that can support big titles.

Currently, Switch devices have 32GB of internal storage; however, it comes out to about 26GB of usable space, as a portion is reserved for system software. Switch game cards currently support 32GB of storage, and they’re able to easily hold games like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo planned to release 64GB game cards in the second half of 2018 to support larger games, but it appears those cards won’t be ready for another full year or more. Some big titles require more storage from the get-go, and 32GB simply won’t cut it.

Video Of The 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi Regenerating Into 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker

doctor-who-regeneration.jpg

Note: Spoilers obviously.

Aaaaand we’re back. Did everyone have a nice holiday? I sure hope you did. 2018 is going to be a great year, isn’t it? That or the world is going to end. Either way, problems will be solved. This is a video from the BBC’s Doctor Who of the twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, regenerating into the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. Now I’m not entirely sure how this whole regeneration thing works, but if it’s anything like how my pinkie regenerated after it was cut off playing assistant in a sketchy magic show, it doesn’t.

Keep going for the video while I polish off the last of the eggnog and lament how there clearly aren’t any starfish or lizard genes in my DNA.

The Link Between Polygamy and War

Is there a link between polygamy and war? The Economist explores (might be paywalled): Men in South Sudan typically marry as often as their wealth — often measured in cattle — will allow. Perhaps 40 percent of marriages are polygamous. “In [our] culture, the more family you have, the more people respect you,” says William, a young IT specialist in search of his second wife. Few South Sudanese see the connection between these matrimonial customs and the country’s horrific civil war. If you ask them the reason for the violence, locals will blame tribalism, greedy politicians, weak institutions and perhaps the oil wealth which gives warlords something to fight over. All true, but not the whole story. Wherever it is widely practised, polygamy (specifically polygyny, the taking of multiple wives) destabilises society, largely because it is a form of inequality which creates an urgent distress in the hearts, and loins, of young men. If a rich man has a Lamborghini, that does not mean that a poor man has to walk, for the supply of cars is not fixed. By contrast, every time a rich man takes an extra wife, another poor man must remain single. If the richest and most powerful 10 percent of men have, say, four wives each, the bottom 30 percent of men cannot marry. Young men will take desperate measures to avoid this state. First Power-At-A-Distance Wireless Charging Technology Approved by FCC

Energous Corporation announced they have received FCC certification for power-at-a-distance charging technology. The new technology sends focused RF power to devices up to three feet away. This technology should be very handy for anyone using small wireless devices like earbuds, smart watches, wireless keyboards and mice, and other similar devices you hate to plug in or set on a pad. I can’t wait for this to make it to market because the convience this type of charging offers is excellent. Check out the demo video below.

“WattUp from Energous represents an incredibly positive lifestyle change,” said Martin Cooper, Energous Board of Directors member and ‘Father of the Cell Phone’ — a pioneer and visionary of the wireless industry. “This ground-breaking technology allows users to automatically charge their WattUp-enabled devices without having to remove them from their wrist or pocket, plug them in or place them on a mat to charge, freeing them from ever having to think about charging their devices again.”
