Radical Leftists Built Their Own FOSS Alternative To Reddit After It Banned Them

eeplox shares a report from VICE, adding: “Community-built sites like these are very much needed since Reddit announced they were going closed source”: After r/LeftWithSharpEdge was taken down, ziq [one of the subreddit’s members] decided to leave Reddit and create an independent anarchist community free from its rules. Raddle.me, which was originally called Raddit.me, is an “alternative that is focused on community building and openness, and not controlled by a corporation,” ziq told me. The original name was intended to sound similar to Reddit, but was later changed to avoid potential trademark issues. Raddle doesn’t have advertisements or run analytical software, so its size is difficult to calculate — but that’s by design. The site is meant to be an alternative to social networks that profit by monitoring user behavior and serving advertisements. “We have no ads, no tracking, no user profiling and we don’t collect or share any user data with anyone,” ziq said. The site is community-built and anyone can contribute to the code. Ziq’s commitment to privacy is an appealing virtue for Raddle’s users. “I’m always very uneasy about the lack of concern for privacy online,” Tequila_Wolf, a user who posts frequently to Raddle, told me in a direct message. “When you have friends on government lists who get harassed at every border because, say, they are members of Anarchists Against The Wall, you know you don’t want to get on that list.” Raddle ultimately came out of more broad problems ziq and Emma saw with Reddit. Ziq complained about how it has increasingly become a recruiting ground for the alt-right, the social network’s overemphasis on America (r/politics, a major subreddit, only discusses U.S.-based politics, for example), and the fact that the site’s code isn’t open source, among other issues. Emma mentioned what she says is a problem with harassment on the site. “To me, the biggest problem with Reddit is how its administrators ignore the routine harassment and witch-hunts of marginalized people that takes place, with r/The_Donald being the most prominent example,” she said.

Apple Investigating Reports of iPhone 8 Plus Devices 'Splitting Open'

Apple is currently investigating reports of the iPhone 8 Plus splitting open while being charged with the included cable and plug adapter. The first claim comes from a Taiwanese iPhone 8 Plus owner, who posted photos which show damage consistent with a swollen battery. The second claim is from a Japanese owner who posted similar photos of his device, which he says arrived in this state. The Next Web reports: The phone belonged to a Ms. Wu, who recently renewed her phone contract and purchased a 64GB rose gold iPhone 8 Plus. The issue emerged five days after purchasing the phone. Wu placed her phone on charge, using the supplied cable and adaptor. After three minutes, she reported seeing the front panel bulge, and eventually lift completely from the device. According to multiple Taiwanese outlets, the phone was later recovered by the carrier, and has since been shipped to Apple for analysis. 9to5Mac adds: While any incident affecting a new iPhone model is bound to attract media attention, it’s worth noting the usual disclaimers. First, any device manufactured in the millions will include some faulty models — the real news would be if this were not the case. Second, investigations into charging-related incidents often reveal that a third-party charger was used, even when an owner initially claims to have used the supplied Apple one.

Former Female Oracle Employees Sue Company For Alleged Pay Discrimination

Three female, former Oracle employees are suing Oracle for allegedly paying women less than men in similar jobs. Rong Jewett, Sophy Wang and Xian Murray filed a lawsuit August 28, seeking a class-action status to represent all other women who have worked at the company. TechCrunch reports: The lawsuit, first reported by The Information, alleges that Oracle discriminated against women by “systematically paying them lower wage rates than Oracle pays to male employees performing substantially equal or similar work under similar working conditions,” the filing states. The time period the lawsuit references is four years prior to the filing and through the date of the trial in California. Referencing how the U.S. Department of Labor sued Oracle in January based on its compliance review that found “systemic discrimination against women” and “gross disparities in pay,” the lawsuit states Oracle had known or should have known about the pay disparity between its male and female employees. The plaintiffs are seeking wages due, interest and liquidated damages plus interest. They also want Oracle to guarantee they won’t pay women less than men for similar work in the future.

Apple Reports 400 Percent Rise In National Security Requests

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Next Web: Apple received a record number of national security orders this year, according to its bi-annual report published this week. The company stated it received more than 13,250 national security requests affecting over 9,000 accounts in the first half of 2017. Compared to the same period in 2015, this represents a threefold increase. National Security Requests are subpoenas by the government which oblige companies or individuals to share their data for national security purposes. The requests are usually made in the form of National Security Letters and are demanded only when it’s indispensable to an investigation. The reason for this rise in numbers is still unclear. The company also revealed it provided data in 44 non-civil governmental cases, information which hadn’t been revealed in its previous reports.

Fallout 1 celebrates 20th anniversary, is now totally free to own on Steam

(credit: Bethesda)

What’s stopped you from playing the original 1997 version of Fallout in recent years? Can’t find your old install CD? Too busy playing other games? Afraid to once again run into a deathclaw?

Bethesda wants to fix that with a 20th anniversary gift: a free copy of the very first Fallout game. The giveaway is a Steam exclusive, so you can’t head to shops like GOG or Humble to claim a copy, but it’s otherwise as simple as logging in and choosing “install game” from its Steam store listing. As of right now, you have a little over 24 hours to claim the freebie, which expires at midnight Pacific time on Saturday, September 30. (That was the game’s exact release date in 1997, if you’re keeping score.)

Sadly, no other games in the series have received a discount to honor the game’s birthday, and Bethesda has not timed any other new game or content releases to honor the date. You’ll have to wait until December 12 for the next big one: Fallout 4 VR, which will launch exclusively for the HTC Vive headset on that date for $59.99. (That price will likely only include that game’s core content, as opposed to Fallout 4‘s “game of the year” edition that includes its extra DLC for free.)

Department of Justice Demands Facebook Information From 'Anti-Administration Activists'

PopeRatzo shares a report from CNN: Trump administration lawyers are demanding the private account information of potentially thousands of Facebook users in three separate search warrants served on the social media giant, according to court documents obtained by CNN. The warrants specifically target the accounts of three Facebook users who are described by their attorneys as “anti-administration activists who have spoken out at organized events, and who are generally very critical of this administration’s policies.” One of those users, Emmelia Talarico, operated the disruptj20 page where Inauguration Day protests were organized and discussed; the page was visited by an estimated 6,000 users whose identities the government would have access to if Facebook hands over the information sought in the search warrants. In court filings, Talarico says if her account information was given to the government, officials would have access to her “personal passwords, security questions and answers, and credit card information,” plus “the private lists of invitees and attendees to multiple political events sponsored by the page.”

'Android' Woman On Display At Japanese Game Convention

android-woman.jpg

This is a video of an alleged hyper-realistic android woman on display at the recent Tokyo Game Show video gaming convention. She was at the booth to promote the upcoming PS4 game ‘Detroit: Become Human’, which revolves around an android “who escapes the factory she was made in to explore her newfound sentience.” People reporting on the PR stunt claim she’s an actual robot, but I thought it was pretty obvious from the video she’s just a woman pretending to be a robot. I guess people will believe what they want to believe. Besides, if she really was a robot, don’t you think I would have just invested all my money in the sexbot company that made her? I mean, I did just get my allowance, after all.

Keep going for the video.

Radeon RX Vega Performance With Mesa 17.3-dev + LLVM 6 + drm-next-4.15-dc

Ending out September is the very exciting news that AMDGPU DC display code will likely land in Linux 4.15. Out of this excitement of finally seeing a mainline Linux kernel with modern Radeon GPUs supporting HDMI/DP audio, atomic mode-setting, and more. I decided to see how well this “drm-next-4.15-dc” code is working out for Radeon RX Vega graphics cards, where attached monitors can finally be driven by this DC code rather than having to rely upon AMDGPU-PRO or other kernel branches. So for ending out this exciting month, here are some fresh benchmarks of the RX Vega 56 / RX Vega 64 and other Radeon GPUs using this kernel paired with Mesa 17.3-dev Git built against LLVM 6.0 SVN compared to various NVIDIA Pascal graphics cards.

US Slashing Embassy Staff In Cuba Because of Apparent Sonic 'Attacks'

PolygamousRanchKid shares a report from The Washington Post (Warning: may be paywalled; alternative source): The United States is yanking more than half its diplomatic personnel from its embassy in Havana and warning Americans not to visit Cuba, saying it is for their own safety after a string of mysterious injuries harmed at least 21 Americans stationed there. “We have no reports that private U.S. citizens have been affected, but the attacks are known to have occurred in U.S. diplomatic residences and hotels frequented by U.S. citizens,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement. “The Department does not have definitive answers on the cause or source of the attacks and is unable to recommend a means to mitigate exposure.” Investigators are looking into the possibility that they were subjected to some sort of “sonic attack,” among other theories, though it is not clear why American diplomats and a handful of Canadian envoys would be the only ones to complain of symptoms. Cuba has denied having anything to do with the injuries. Among the possibilities being explored is that agents acting on behalf of a third country may be responsible.

Well That Sucks: Mario Was Actually Punching Yoshi In The Back Of The Head To Make Him Stick His Tongue Out

In terrible news, during an interview to celebrate the release of the new SNES Mini, Super Mario World developer Shigefumi Hino admitted that Mario is, in fact, punching Yoshi in the back of the head to make him stick his tongue out and eat stuff in the game. Come on — that’s no way to treat your mount.

“Lots of people think that while Mario is pointing his finger forward, he’s saying ‘Go,’ and Yoshi’s tongue comes out. However, the set up that I drew was that when Mario punches Yoshi in the head, the character’s tongue shoots out in surprise.”

“What’s more, there’s an added ‘bop’ sound. However, it seemed like people would say ‘Poor Yoshi,’ so that’s why it became that Mario is saying ‘Go.'”

Wow, that ain’t right. I feel so bad now. I don’t even know how many times I punched that poor little dinosaur in the back of the head when I was growing up, but it was definitely in the thousands, possibly in the tens of thousands. I blame Mario. Well, I guess there’s only one thing left to do. “Play Super Smash Bros as Youshi and rip Mario a new one?” That guy’s gonna have like thirty buttholes when I’m through with him.

Thanks to n0nentity, Christine and Adam, who agree all that turtle stomping wasn’t cool either.
