How One Man Overcame Blindness and Started an Audiobook Show for New Scifi and Fantasy

In early 2015, 33-year-old Chris Herron was declared legally blind, and was told he had an 80-percent chance of losing his sight entirely in three months. Now, he’s almost fully recovered, and has launched an audiobook channel that helps scifi and fantasy authors… just like how they once helped him.

Titanfall 2 Goes up to 6K Resolution on Xbox One X

A producer at Respawn Entertainment claims that the Xbox One X is capable of rendering Titanfall 2 at 3200p when the console’s GPU is pushed to its limit: occasionally, the system may render at 6K resolution and downsample those images to whatever resolution the Xbox is outputting to. The result is “truly glorious on a 4K display.”

…although the Xbox One X outputs at 4K, there are times when Titanfall 2 can actually render higher. Naturally, this isn’t a scenario that is a constant occurrence, but it is still impressive to hear that the upcoming Xbox console can render the title at 3200p, which is a little above 6K resolution. Of course, every game will be different depending on how much load is being put on the GPU.

Americans Are Getting Tired of Michael Bay's Transformers Films

The latest Transformers film, “The Last Knight,” has opened at a franchise low of $69 million. This is a far cry from 2014’s “Age of Extinction,” which brought in over $100 million within the same timeframe. Some consider this to be a clear signal for a reboot, but foreign numbers are looking a lot better: the film has racked up $196 million so far in China and other territories.

“The Last Knight” carries an estimated $217 million production budget. This makes “Transformers: The Last Knight” the latest summer blockbuster to bank on overseas ticket sales to have a shot at turning a profit. In China, the big-budget action sequel made $41 million in its opening day alone. The projected international cume through Sunday is $196.2 million, powered by $123.4 million in China. Imax screens will account for $24.3 million of the film’s total earnings this weekend.

SpaceX Livestreams Sunday's Rocket Launch

An anonymous reader quotes Space.com:
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the 10 satellites for Iridium Communications is scheduled to liftoff from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 1:25 p.m. PDT (4:25 p.m. EDT/2025 GMT). The live webcast is expected to begin about 1 hour before the opening of the launch window, and you can watch it on SpaceX’s website, or at Space.com. This is the second of eight planned Iridium launches with SpaceX. The launches will deliver a total of 75 satellites into space for the $3 billion Iridium NEXT global communications network. “Iridium NEXT will replace the company’s existing global constellation in one of the largest technology upgrades ever completed in space,” according to a statement from Iridium. “It represents the evolution of critical communications infrastructure that governments and organizations worldwide rely upon to drive business, enable connectivity, empower disaster relief efforts and more.” After the mission the booster rocket will attempt to land on a droneship. The droneships name is “Just Read The Instructions.”

Square Enix Congratulates Denuvo: "Thanks to You, People Have to Buy the Game"

Three testimonials are currently featured on the official Denuvo site, and people are finding Square Enix’s quote amusing. Apparently, the Deus Ex and Final Fantasy publisher thinks that PC gamers do not buy games and pirate everything. Of course, this could just be sarcasm, considering the state of Denuvo these days.

Square Enix congratulated Denuvo, claiming that thanks to this anti-tamper tech, people now have to buy their games. Ouch. Here is Square Enix’s full quote: “Thanks to you for the incredible service your team provide – it’s great to partner with you! It’s thanks to you guys that people have to buy the game.” Ironically, and as we’ve already stated, even the latest version of the Denuvo anti-tamper tech has been cracked. Still, Square Enix’s quote implies that PC gamers are pirates and that they wouldn’t buy games otherwise.

Microsoft Files New Patent to Stop Laptop Thieves

All of the major smartphone platforms have some kind of remote erase capability, and that same perk may be coming to laptops, courtesy of the cellular technology in always-connected PCs and a related patent that would allow users to send a signal that locks a PC and wipes the device – even when there is no service. In another patent, Microsoft wants to be able to detect when you are about to eat something.

At least some embodiments described herein relate to the restricted use of a cellular network to facilitate disablement of a device that is suspected lost or stolen. Accordingly, even if the device is not capable of general use of the cellular network (e.g., due to a physical authentication module, such as a subscriber identity module, being absent and/or due to a software restriction on cellular network access), disablement communications are still permitted across the cellular network.

Ethereum Exchange Reimburses Customer Losses After 'Flash Crash'

An anonymous reader writes:
“The price of ethereum crashed as low as 10 cents from around $319 in about a second on the GDAX cryptocurrency exchange on Wednesday,” reports CNBC, calling it “a move that is being blamed on a ‘multimillion dollar market sell’ order… As the price continued to fall, another 800 stop loss orders and margin funding liquidations caused ethereum to trade as low as 10 cents.” An executive for the exchange said “Our matching engine operated as intended throughout this event and trading with advanced features like margin always carries inherent risk.”
Though some users complained they lost money, the price rebounded to $325 — and according to a report on one trading site, “one person had an order in for just over 3,800 ethereum if the price fell to 10 cents on the GDAX exchange,” reports CNBC. “Theoretically this person would have spent $380 to buy these coins, and when the price shot up above $300 again, the trader would be sitting on over $1 million.” Yet the currency exchange announced Friday that they’re honoring everyone’s gains, while also reimbursing customers who suffered losses. “We view this as an opportunity to demonstrate our long-term commitment to our customers and belief in the future of this industry.”

Anthem Paying Record $115M to Settle Data Breach Suit

Back in 2015, Anthem’s systems were breached using a stolen password, resulting in the exposure and theft of nearly 80 million records, including client names, dates of birth, physical and email addresses, medical IDs, and Social Security numbers. The US’s largest insurance company is now expected to pay for that mistake with the largest settlement to date for a data breach case. Funds will go toward credit monitoring services for victims, among other things.

…it would be the largest data breach settlement in history, according to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, who announced the agreement Friday. The funds would be used to provide victims of the data breach at least two years of credit monitoring and to reimburse customers for breach-related expenses. The settlement would also guarantee a certain level of funding for “information security to implement or maintain numerous specific changes to its data security systems, including encryption of certain information and archiving sensitive data with strict access controls,” the plaintiff attorneys said.

90 Cities Install A Covert Technology That Listens For Gunshots

An anonymous reader quotes Business Insider:
In more than 90 cities across the US, including New York, microphones placed strategically around high-crime areas pick up the sounds of gunfire and alert police to the shooting’s location via dots on a city map… ShotSpotter also sends alerts to apps on cops’ phones. “We’ve gone to the dot and found the casings 11 feet from where the dot was, according to the GPS coordinates,” Capt. David Salazar of the Milwaukee Police Dept. told Business Insider. “So it’s incredibly helpful. We’ve saved a lot of people’s lives.”
When three microphones pick up a gunshot, ShotSpotter figures out where the sound comes from. Human analysts in the Newark, California, headquarters confirm the noise came from a gun (not a firecracker or some other source). The police can then locate the gunshot on a map and investigate the scene. The whole process happens “much faster” than dialing 911, Salazar said, though he wouldn’t disclose the exact time.
The company’s CEO argues their technology deters crime by demonstrating to bad neighborhoods that police will respond quickly to gunshots. (Although last year Forbes discovered that in 30% to 70% of cases, “police found no evidence of a gunshot when they arrived.”) And in a neighborhood where ShotSpotter is installed, one 60-year-old man is already complaining, “I don’t like Big Brother being in all my business.”

Australia advocates weakening strong crypto at upcoming “Five Eyes” meeting

Two top Australian government officials said Sunday that they will push for “thwarting the encryption of terrorist messaging” during an upcoming meeting next week of the so-called “Five Eyes” group of English-speaking nations that routinely share intelligence.

The move indicates that Canberra is now running ahead with what the FBI has dubbed “going dark” for several years now. This is the notion that with the advent of widespread, easy-to-use strong encryption on smartphones and other devices, law enforcement has been hindered. Many experts say, however, that any method that would allow the government access even during certain situations would weaken overall security for everyone.

According to a statement released by Attorney General George Brandis, and Peter Dutton, the country’s top immigration official, Australia will press for new laws, pressure private companies, and urge for a new international data sharing agreement amongst the quintet of countries.

German Police Are Raiding Homes over Hateful Postings on Social Media

Over 30 homes were raided in Germany this week for hateful postings over social media, which included threats, coercion, and incitement to racism. Social media users are already subject to a range of punishments for posting illegal material, but Justice Minister Heiko Maas is championing further laws that crack down on hate speech: these new statutes would force networks to offer a readily available complaint process for posts that may amount to threats, hate speech, defamation, or incitement to commit a crime, among other offences.

Under German law, social media users are subject to a range of punishments for posting illegal material, including a prison sentence of up to five years for inciting racial hatred. Under the draft statute, networks must offer a readily available complaint process for posts that may amount to threats, hate speech, defamation or incitement to commit a crime, among other offences. Social media outlets would have 24 hours to delete “obviously criminal content” and a week to decide on more ambiguous cases.
