Minnesota Woman Fatally Shoots Boyfriend in Failed YouTube Video Stunt

The latest Darwin Award winner has emerged out of Minnesota: Pedro Ruiz III thought it would be a great idea to let his girlfriend, Monalisa Perez, fire a Desert Eagle round at his chest to determine whether it would be powerful enough to pierce the book he was holding. Who will play them in the inevitable biopic?

As part of a young couple’s quest for YouTube fame, a 19-year-old woman shot at a book her boyfriend was holding against his chest, killing him at close range outside their northwestern Minnesota home. Ruiz held up the book – described by County Attorney James Brue as a hardcover encyclopedia – and Perez pulled the trigger on a .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol, trying to see whether the bullet would go through, according to the criminal complaint. The Desert Eagle is described by retailer Cabela’s in an online ad as “one of the world’s most powerful semiautomatic handguns.”

343 Industries Gives Legal Blessing for Fan-Made Halo Game "Installation 01"

In a nice change of pace from recent drama between fans and publishers/developers (e.g., Take-Two and the GTA mod ordeal), the team behind Installation 01 (a fan-made artistic tribute to Halo that recreates the multiplayer experience of the Bungie-era games) has announced in a blog post titled “Friends in High Places” that Microsoft and 343 Industries has no plans to derail their work in any way, so long as no profit (donations, merchandise) comes from it. Installation 01 has been in development since the end of 2013, but no release date has been announced.

…we have been ensured that Installation 01 is not under imminent legal threat, provided we remain non-commercial in nature and scope, and continue to follow Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules to the letter. We are now able to say with certainty that Installation 01 will never be accepting donations. We also will not be selling i01 or Halo related merchandise. This is to keep a respectful distance between us and Microsoft’s intellectual property. It is also important to note that these rules and assurances from 343 are specific to Installation 01 as a project, and should not be interpreted to apply elsewhere.

Twitter Detects Riots Faster Than Police, Study Says

A new study by Cardiff University has determined that Twitter can be used to identify dangerous situations up to an hour faster than police reports. From a report: Researchers at Cardiff analyzed 1.6 million tweets relevant to the 2011 London riots. In the town of Enfield, police received reports of disorder an hour and 23 minutes after computer systems could have picked up the same information from Twitter, according to the study. “In this research, we show that online social media are becoming the go-to place to report observations of everyday occurrences — including social disorder and terrestrial criminal activity,” said co-author of the study Pete Burnap.

Goodbye, World: Prada Selling $185 Large Paper Clip

prada-paper-clip-money-clip.jpg

This is the Prada Paperclip-Shaped Money Clip. It’s exactly what it sounds like and costs $185. For reference, my wallet cost $30 and I’ve had it for eleven years without losing it. I didn’t lose the one before that either, it just started to fall apart so I buried it in the backyard hoping to grow a money tree.

At $185, that’s the equivalent of buying more than 13,000 regular paper clips from office depot.

As you might expect, social media is not impressed.

One person wrote on Twitter that for $185, the clip should be able to hold their life together.

If all it took was a $185 paperclip to hold my life together, believe me, I would own one. I’d probably own three or four so I could clip my life together real good. And maybe wrap a couple $140 rubber bands around it just to be sure. And — what are these? Why they’re $90 staples! Man, my life would be so held together you’d swear I was an adult who knew what he was doing.

Thanks to Dave L, who keeps all his money in wads in his pockets like a normal person who has no idea how much money they have at any given time.

The Biggest Windows 10 Shop? Microsoft Partner Accenture

Mary Zo Foley, reporting for ZDNet: Microsoft partner Accenture, a global consulting company, is on track to become “the largest consumer of Windows 10,” say the two companies. By 2018, Accenture will have migrated all of its 400,000 employees to Windows 10 in a move that will have taken two years. (Accenture has 400,000 employees?! Microsoft has about 114,000.) Currently, Accenture has migrated somewhere between 250,000 and close to 300,000 users to Windows 10, according to information shared on June 28. In a video accompanying the latest statistics on the Microsoft Windows blog site, it appears that Accenture also currently has 450,000 Office 365 mailboxes, 16,000 SharePoint sites and 99,500 smartphones and tablets enrolled in mobile-device management (which I take to be Microsoft’s Enterprise Mobility + Security suite products).

Stop Getting So Hung Up On One-Owner Cars

Today I spit my Lucky Charms all over my laptop screen after seeing this bone-stock Jeep Cherokee for sale on Ebay for nearly $16,000. The seller’s reasoning for selling the Jeep at such a lofty price was a typical one: it’s a one-owner car. My thought upon reading this: why should I give a crap?

Survey: Nearly a Quarter of Windows PC Owners Plan to Switch to Apple

Data from Ventro Analytics suggests that Mac envy is rife: results from a survey show that over 20% of Windows users are planning to jump ship to Apple. In contrast, 98% of current Mac owners intend to remain on that platform. A look at different income brackets also reveals that those who earn over $150K are most likely to switch.

…no less than 25% of those with Windows desktop computers were planning to migrate to a macOS machine – and to do so within the next six months. Yes, you read that right: a quarter of all folks who were quizzed by the firm. And the figure wasn’t much smaller when it came to Windows laptop owners, with 21% saying that they intend to switch to a Mac (again within the next six months). On the flipside, and in marked contrast, 98% of those who currently own a Mac plan to stay with an Apple computer for their next purchase. So just 2% are intending a switch to Windows.

X299 VRM Coolers Are Being Described as a "Disaster"

Overclocker der8auer is contending that X299 boards have bad VRM coolers: temperatures reached as high as 100C on the board he tested. He estimates that the VRM modules are probably at Tjunction max, and the single 8-pin connectors on PSUs can hit 60C when overclocking the 10-core models. “If I take off the heat sink and just put a fan over it, there’s no problem whatsoever.”

How Will We Stop Hackers From Invading Our Brains Once We’re Cyborgs?

Rapid developments in brain-machine interfacing and neuroprosthetics are revolutionizing the way we treat paralyzed people, but the same technologies could eventually be put to more generalized use—a development that’ll turn many of us into veritable cyborgs. Before we get to that point, however, we’ll need to make…
