A Beautifully Crafted Harry Potter Golden Snitch Necklace/Engagement Ring Box

golden-snitch-engagement-ring-box-3.jpg

This is the very impressive Golden Snitch necklace/engagement ring box crafted by New Zealand based Freeman Jewelry Design. In the artist’s own words while I try to figure out how to prevent my girlfriend from ever seeing this:

The Freeman Design Golden Snitch Inspired Engagement Ring Box, is made to make that special moment an extra special surprise. Made out of Sterling Silver, the Snitch has an extra thick coating of 18ct Yellow Gold, with wings plated in an extra think coating of Rhodium. Made to be a necklace, it comes with a Nimbus 2000 Broomstick Inspired Charm which secretly doubles as the Key to open it. The Hinging and Catch Mechanism is concealed so when shut, keeps the Engagement Ring a complete secret.

The Snitch is made with the aid of 3D computer modeling, which is then 3D printed and cast in Sterling Silver using the Lost Wax Casting Process. With over 30 hours of attentive hand work and scrutiny to finish it to the highest of standards. Hand engraved with ‘I Open at the Close’ and the lucky receiver’s name on the inside. It is fully hand polished, the catch and internal mechanisms are handmade.

No word on the price, but I imagine it’s expensive. Still – you only get married a couple times, right? Why not splurge? Plus you could save some money by not actually buying an engagement ring and just telling your girlfriend it’s invisible because you put a magic spell on it. Then she’ll use her Time-Turner to return to the day you first met and make sure to never bump into you at that coffee shop.

Keep going for a bunch more pics and a brief video.

McMansion Hell returns, ditches all Zillow images to prevent legal battle

Zillow and McMansion Hell have buried the hatchet. The company won’t sue, and the blog won’t use images from Zillow anymore. However, she will keep all archival Zillow images (including her commentary) on her site.

In a brief statement, Zillow said it will “not pursue any legal action.” The company issued the statement shortly after an Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney representing Kate Wagner fired back at Zillow in a five-page letter. Wagner is behind the viral architecture blog, McMansion Hell.

On Monday, Wagner received a demand letter from Zillow threatening a lawsuit over spurious copyright claims and possible violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which is a federal anti-hacking law. Even more bizarrely, as the EFF letter pointed out, Zillow did not own the images in question—it merely licensed them from others. So it wasn’t clear how Zillow would have had standing to bring a suit. Plus, even if the company did somehow have standing, her satirical commentary was protected under the Fair Use doctrine of American copyright law.

O'Reilly Media Has Stopped Retailing Books Directly On Its Ecommerce Store

An anonymous reader shares a press release: This week, O’Reilly Media stopped retailing books directly on our ecommerce store. You might say “what!?” Or you might say “what’s the big deal?” Before I explain our business strategy here, there are two important things to note: We are absolutely continuing to publish the top-quality books that are important to the communities we serve. 1. We still sell them through Amazon or your favorite retailer. 2. So why the change? It’s clear that we’re in the midst of a fundamental shift in how people get and use their content. Subscription services like Spotify and Netflix are the new norm, as people opt for paying for digital access rather than purchasing physical units one by one. We’ve already seen this in our own business — the growth of membership on Safari far exceeds the individual units previously purchased on oreilly.com. That’s one reason for the change.

Mylan shareholders hate how much money board of directors makes

A whopping 83 percent of Mylan shareholders voted down the company’s astronomical executive compensation packages. But a majority of shareholders still supports most of the company’s beleaguered directors, according to fresh filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ars reported the general outcomes of the shareholder votes that took place last week at an annual meeting in Amsterdam. The vote was closely watched after a group of shareholders, disgruntled by the EpiPen pricing scandal and executive pay, began campaigning to reject executive pay plans and oust the board—something that requires a two-thirds-majority under Mylan’s governance rules. Though shareholders did not unseat the incumbent board members, Mylan declined to reveal the vote tallies.

Those tallies, however, were revealed yesterday in a public filing with the SEC—and they’ve reignited calls for resignations and reform.

Facebook May Finally Have To Compromise Its User Experience In Order To Keep Growing

Tony Haile, writing for Recode: Facebook has a problem. What has driven its growth for the last five years won’t drive its growth for the next five. However, the options in front of the company involve the kind of user experience compromises that have maimed platforms that preceded it. Facebook makes its money from the West. Some 30 percent of its users and 73 percent of its revenue is from North America and Europe. The monthly average revenue per user for Western users is $3.33 versus 53 cents for the rest of the world. Facebook is a global company, but a Western business. Facebook’s user growth in the West is a little over 1 percent a quarter. In North America, Facebook’s monthly active users represent 80 percent of the population above the age of 14. If Facebook wishes to grow its Western revenue at the rate its shareholders demand, a 1 percent user growth rate will not do it. Absent rapid user growth, the other lever for increasing advertising revenue is increasing the number or value of ads that are shown to existing users. However, the News Feed is close to saturation. Facebook believes that it cannot stick any more ads in the News Feed without adversely affecting user retention. This combination of slowing user growth and News Feed saturation has led Facebook to warn of a rapid deceleration in revenue growth over the next six months. For the first time in years, Facebook needs a new lever to pull.

Music Festival Confetti Cannons Might Be Our Only Surefire Defense Against Drones

As if random asteroids and vengeful hawks weren’t enough of a reason to keep a wary eye on the skies, drones have gone from being harmless RC toys to genuine weapons. Until now, the only way to stay safe was to only go outside on windy days, but it looks like there’s a new weapon for the war on drones: confetti…

Finally, Some Decent Lightsaber Salt And Pepper Grinders

lightsaber-salt-and-pepper-grinders-1.jpg

These are the $40 Star Wars Lightsaber Salt And Pepper Grinders (available on Amazon HERE and probably other places). They’re made of coated stainless stell, can be adjusted for a fine or course grind, and each runs on four AA batteries so you don’t have to crank them yourselves. That’s a good thing too, because I have a bad left wrist. I can’t even do a pushup without it sending waves of pain up my arm. Honestly, I have no clue why it happens. “You broke your wrist a while ago, remember?” You think it could be related?!

Keep going for a couple more shots.

McMansion Hell is Back Online, Will Not Comply With Zillow's Demands

Earlier this week, the real estate site Zillow sent a cease-and-desist letter to the writer behind McMansion Hell, a blog that makes fun of ugly suburban houses. McMansion Hell’s creator, Kate Wagner, uses Zillow photos in her posts—which Zillow claims is a violation of their terms of service. However, Wagner’s…

'Microsoft' Scam Callers Arrested After Years of Terrorising the Technically Challenged

An anonymous reader shares a report: Those shameless scammers that cold-call people pretending to be from Microsoft and demanding money after walking users through supposed problems with their computers? They’re going down, it seems, with four people arrested in the UK for enabling the rip-off. City of London Police and Microsoft, the real Microsoft, have been working together for two years to trace the operators of the scheme, with the four people — two from Woking and two from South Shields — arrested on suspicion of fraud. Although the calls were found to originate from India, the investigators found that the scam was allegedly being run out of the UK, with the poor overseas callers working from scripts and, presumably, not really aware they’re doing anything hugely wrong.

Watch a Simulated Asteroid Hit the Atmosphere at 45,000 Miles Per Hour

Four years ago, an asteroid the size of a city bus screamed across the skies of Chelyabinsk, Russia, shattering glass around a 60 mile perimeter and sending 1,200 people to hospitals with related injuries. In an effort to learn more about these rare but dangerous encounters with objects from space, NASA has used a…
